Barcelona reach Champions League semis despite 3-1 loss at Dortmund
Ammon News - Five-time European champions Barcelona reached their first Champions League semi-final in six seasons with a 5-3 aggregate victory despite being beaten 3-1 by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
Serhou Guirassy scored a hat-trick for Dortmund to condemn Barca to their first defeat across all competitions this year but it could not prevent the Catalans from reaching the last four.
Barcelona will play either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich, who face each other on Wednesday, in the last four.
"Dortmund did very well. We did not have our best day. I had a feeling something like that would happen today because I know the stadium well," said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.
"Things didn't go too well for us but Dortmund played very well. But congratulations to my team, we're in the semi-finals. We're happy. I'm really happy for the team and the club."
The visitors found themselves on the back foot from the start with Dortmund shooting out of the blocks as they attempted to bounce back from last week's 4-0 first-leg loss.
Dortmund, who drew 2-2 against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday, had two golden chances in the opening minutes before Guirassy's chipped penalty in the 11th minute gave them a deserved lead.
The Spaniards, unbeaten in 2025 going into the game, gradually fought their way back and could have levelled were it not for some sloppy finishing from Jules Kounde in the 40th.
After the break, however, Dortmund were again the stronger side at the start and Guirassy headed in after Ramy Bensebaini's nod from a corner four minutes after the restart to ignite hopes of a potential record-matching comeback.
Dortmund's attempt to match Barcelona's Champions League record of overturning a four-goal first-leg deficit in a knockout stage was derailed by Bensebaini's 54th-minute own goal that settled Spanish nerves.
Robert Lewandowski had put Bensebaini under pressure as he chased a cutback from Fermin Lopez, and the Dortmund player stabbed the ball into his own net.
Lopez then had a chance to score himself in the 64th but his shot missed the target.
Guirassy, the first Dortmund player to score 13 goals in a single Champions League campaign, completed his hat-trick in the 76th, pouncing on a defensive error.
But, with Dortmund, who are struggling in the Bundesliga and risk missing out on Champions League football next season, still needing two more goals to take the game to extra time, the hosts gradually ran out of steam.
"We wanted to play better and more courageously and support each other more on the pitch," said Dortmund's Pascal Gross.

Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was soon pressed into action, blocking a Goncalo Ramos shot from just outside the box on 17 minutes as PSG's pressure mounted. Oblak denied PSG again moments later, diving to stop a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia shot that was destined for the bottom left-hand corner. Those early warning shots proved to be a precursor for the game's opening goal in the 19th minute. A lovely passing move down the right saw the ball swiftly transferred to Georgian winger Kvaratskhelia who deftly laid off into the path of Ruiz to sweep in a low finish for 1-0. With Atletico struggling to gain any kind of a foothold in the contest, the Spanish side's frustration began to show. Clement Lenglet was booked for a rash challenge on Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi in the 21st minute, and Robin Le Normand picked up Atletico's second yellow soon afterwards for bringing down Ruiz. Ruiz himself was booked on 28 minutes for a shove on Giuliano Simeone before the Argentine midfielder collected Atletico's third yellow soon afterwards. With the Parisians in complete control, Atletico had to wait until the stroke of half-time before their first shot on goal, France's Antoine Griezmann drawing a smart save from Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low shot. From the ensuing counter-attack, however, Atletico found themselves 2-0 down. The electric Kvaratskhelia again found space down the left and fed inside to Vitinha, who ghosted into the box before steering a crisp shot beyond Oblak for 2-0. Atletico appeared to have hauled themselves back into the game early in the second half when Julian Alvarez rifled home a low finish to make it 2-1. But the goal was chalked off after VAR spotted a bodycheck by Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul on Desire Doue in the build-up. That effort appeared to buoy Atletico for the remainder of the half, but despite playing with greater intensity they were unable to create a single shot on goal. Lenglet was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card on 78 minutes. A disappointing Atleti display was summed up by a glaring miss four minutes later, substitute Alexander Sorloth somehow scooping over an open goal from a few yards out after Marcos Llorente's cross. PSG swiftly made Atleti pay for that miss, substitute Senny Mayulu pouncing on a loose ball to make it 3-0 in the 87th minute. The new FIFA Club World Cup will see the world's top 32 club teams compete to be crowned the first true global club world champions across 63 games in 12 venues and 11 Host Cities in the United States – Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington, DC. No fewer than 13 of the Argentina squad that lifted international football's biggest prize in Qatar in 2022 will feature, led by Inter Miami CF's Lionel Messi, who is likely to feature in the opening game against Al Ahly FC on Saturday, 14th June. There are nine of France's victorious 2018 vintage, including Real Madrid C. F. star Kylian Mbappé and Les Bleus' then-captain Hugo Lloris of Los Angeles Football Club. Another three, Ousmane Dembélé, Lucas Hernandez and Presnel Kimpembe, come to the US as European club champions having claimed that title late last month with Paris Saint-Germain.
