'Miracle no one died' in arson attack on west Dublin apartment block

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info It is "a miracle no one died" after an arson attack at a west Dublin apartment block, a local Councillor has said. The fire was started in an underground car park at a block on Station Road in Hansfield in the early hours of Friday morning. Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene and had to evacuate a number of buildings in the area. Thankfully no one was injured in the incident, but a number of tenants have been left temporarily homeless due to smoke damage to their homes, and a number of cars were destroyed. Residents claim they have contacted Tuath, the housing body that manages the building, and Fingal County Council over issues with the fire alarm going off repeatedly at the building, as well as issues over repeated bicycle thefts and vandalism - but have not had a response to their concerns. Local Aontu Cllr Gerard Sheehan said the attack was an "appalling act". He said: "The deliberate setting of a fire in a residential building is an appalling act that endangers lives and undermines the safety of our communities. "It's a miracle that no one was killed or injured in this devastating incident. This is something I have been worried about for some time, and am on the record as voicing those concerns. "There have been concerns previously raised not just by me, but other councillors in relation to the shutters on the garage doors not working, allowing access to the underground parking area." He has also urged both Tuath and Fingal County Council to implement stronger security and fire safety measures. He added: 'We must ensure that our residents feel safe in their homes. This includes reviewing fire safety protocols, improving building security, and fostering community vigilance.' Shannon Stow, who lives in the building with her husband Gavin and their children, told Dublin Live she initially ignored the fire alarm when it sounded to warn residents of the blaze in the car park. She said: "We always ignore the fire alarm because we were told to ignore it because there's a fault in the system... we were told to silence the alarm if it ever went off. There was someone trying to silence it and I had to shout at him, 'no go back up and get your kids, there's an actual fire in the car park'." Another resident, Megan O'Callaghan, described the incident as "scary" and said there had been some damage to her apartment. Thankfully she was able to get back into it and will not have to be temporarily re-housed. "It's fairly smoky," she said. "We've left the windows open but it's just scary putting the babies back to bed and thinking that it's not a fire because the alarms go off every second day." Megan and her family had to sit in their car until 5am before they could re-enter their home. Shannon said residents are "extremely annoyed" following the fire. "Like a lot of people have said, it could have been a lot different if we had have just laid there and ignored that [alarm] or if someone had silenced it and it stayed silent, it might be a very different story being told today," she said. Residents have previously written to Tuath and Fingal County Council over the fire alarm going off repeatedly, as well as persistent issues with vandalism and bicycle theft. They have also called for a return of 24-hour security which was in place before Tuath took over management of the building but say they have had not had a response to the issues raised. Another tenant told Dublin Live: "Initially we were letting from a private letting company whom where fantastic to deal with and dealt with any safety issues swiftly, we even had night time security. Since this new management company Tuath took over, us private tenants were allowed to remain in our homes continuing to pay high rents, however the maintenance of the building declined drastically. "We have been without a front door for over seven months and the shutters are intentionally broken regularly. We all believe that this incident is down to the negligence of the maintenance company themselves who remain silent when any issues are brought their way and don't have the safety of the tenants in their best interest." Tuath Housing said in a statement: "We can confirm that a fire occurred last night in the basement of an apartment building managed by Tuath Housing. It was quickly contained and brought under control by the emergency services. "This was an unfortunate incident and thankfully, no one was injured. Of the almost 150 units in the development, 21 are temporarily affected, primarily due to disruption of services such as water. As a precaution, residents of these homes are being temporarily relocated for the coming days while we assess any potential damage and restore full services. "The safety and wellbeing of our tenants is our highest priority. We recognise this is an inconvenience and are working to minimise disruption and support those affected. We thank residents for their understanding and cooperation." Gardai confirmed they are investigating the arson attack and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. A Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardai attended the scene of a criminal damage by fire incident on Station Road, Hansfield, Dublin 15 in the early hours of this morning, Friday 6th June 2025. A number of buildings were evacuated as the local fire service extinguished the fire. "There were no reports of injuries. A number of vehicles were damaged in the incident. The scene was preserved for a technical examination. Gardai are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station on (01) 6667000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station." Convicted drug dealer and former soccer club boss moved to Midlands jail

Andrew Noonan was jailed for 13-and-a-half years in relation to his 'high' level role in a €2.7 million heroin importation enterprise last month CONVICTED drug dealer and the former soccer club boss, Andrew Noonan has been transferred from Mountjoy to the Midlands Prison. Sources said the former manager of Bluebell United in Dublin, who was jailed for 13-and-a-half years in relation to his 'high' level role in a €2.769 million heroin importation enterprise last month – was moved for 'operational reasons.' These are understood to relate to the chronic overcrowding currently being experience by inmates in Mountjoy. Noonan role in the heroin importation scheme was discovered after gardaí posed as delivery men in a controlled delivery of the drugs to a co-accused, Keith Quinn (36) Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard last month that gardaí believe 45-year-old Noonan had a supervisory role in relation to his co-accused Quinn and say Noonan's level in the overall context of the enterprise was 'high.' Andrew Noonan News in 90 Seconds - 7th June Quinn pleaded guilty in relation to his own role and received a seven-and-a-half year sentence with the final three-and-a-half years suspended in 2021. This was later increased by the Court of Appeal to eight years imprisonment with 18 months suspended. He has since been released. Noonan, of Redhills Park, Ellistown, Co Kildare, was convicted following a trial of three drugs offences in relation to the possession, sale and supply of the drugs at Rosemount Business Park, Dublin 11, on August 5th, 2020. He was also convicted of possession of a phone with an encrypted application, Enigma, giving rise to a reasonable inference that it was to be used in connection with a drug trafficking offence. He was acquitted of possession of a signal blocker. The court heard Noonan does not accept the verdict of the jury and denied any role in relation to the drugs. Garda Redmond O'Leary of the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau told John Berry SC, prosecuting, that in August 2020, British police authorities became suspicious of a package travelling through the UK. It was analysed and tested positive for heroin. A garda operation involving a controlled delivery was put in place, and the package was delivered to Quinn's workplace in the Dublin industrial estate by a garda posing as a UPS driver. Internal CCTV of the workplace showed Quinn taking out his phone and interacting with the package in what was later found to be a picture and text messages sent to Noonan. No suspicion attaches to Quinn's former workplace. Quinn placed the package in his car and was observed driving in convoy with another car, driven by Noonan, to another office in the estate. Quinn got out, placed the package in the office and then drove in convoy with Noonan to a coffee shop where gardaí intercepted them. Noonan was, at this stage, found in possession of the keys to the office where Quinn had placed the package. Three phones were also retrieved from Noonan's person and his car. Passing sentence, Judge Elma Sheahan said foremost in the court's mind in sentencing was the devastating harm caused by the drugs trade, which the court deals with on a daily basis. She said the value and quantity of the seizure were also critical factors. Judge Sheahan said at the time of this offending, Noonan was the manager of a soccer team and employed in a family business. She said he was in a position of trust and influence over young men. She said this did not sit easy and offends all society expects from an individual in such a role.

Tears flow as mourners bid farewell to 'proud Kerry man' Michael Gaine

Friends and family gathered on Saturday to bid an emotional final farewell to tragic murder victim Michael Gaine at his funeral in Co Kerry. The 56-year-old farmer was last seen alive on March 20, with his remains found on his land and in a slurry tank on his farm almost two months later on May 16. Gardai are treating his death as a homicide. Mourners packed into Holy Cross Church in Kenmare on Saturday to pay their final respects to the hugely popular farmer and support his family. Mr Gaine's cousin Eoghan Clarke remembered him as a "proud Kerry man and an even prouder Kenmare man", while celebrant Fr George Hayes told the congregation at the funeral mass he was someone who "loved much and was much loved". During the emotional ceremony, family and friends brought mementoes representing Mr Gaine's life to the altar, including a wedding photo of the popular farmer and his wife Janice, along with a photo of Mr Gaine on his quad with his faithful cavalier dog Teddy. As the ceremony ended, Fr Hayes said: "Before we go your separate ways let us take leave of our brother Michael. One day we shall joyfully greet Michael again when the love of Christ which conquers all things destroys even death itself." At the request of Mr Gaine's family, his final resting place will be private.
