
AI can spontaneously develop human-like communication, study finds
Artificial intelligence can spontaneously develop human-like social conventions, a study has found.
The research, undertaken in collaboration between City St George's, University of London and the IT University of Copenhagen, suggests that when large language model (LLM) AI agents such as ChatGPT communicate in groups without outside involvement they can begin to adopt linguistic forms and social norms the same way that humans do when they socialise.
The study's lead author, Ariel Flint Ashery, a doctoral researcher at City St George's, said the group's work went against the majority of research done into AI, as it treated AI as a social rather than solitary entity.
'Most research so far has treated LLMs in isolation but real-world AI systems will increasingly involve many interacting agents,' said Ashery.
'We wanted to know: can these models coordinate their behaviour by forming conventions, the building blocks of a society? The answer is yes, and what they do together can't be reduced to what they do alone.'
Groups of individual LLM agents used in the study ranged from 24 to 100 and, in each experiment, two LLM agents were randomly paired and asked to select a 'name', be it a letter or string of characters, from a pool of options.
When both the agents selected the same name they were rewarded, but when they selected different options they were penalised and shown each other's choices.
Despite agents not being aware that they were part of a larger group and having their memories limited to only their own recent interactions, a shared naming convention spontaneously emerged across the population without a predefined solution, mimicking the communication norms of human culture.
Andrea Baronchelli, a professor of complexity science at City St George's and the senior author of the study, compared the spread of behaviour with the creation of new words and terms in our society.
'The agents are not copying a leader,' he said. 'They are all actively trying to coordinate, and always in pairs. Each interaction is a one-on-one attempt to agree on a label, without any global view.
'It's like the term 'spam'. No one formally defined it, but through repeated coordination efforts, it became the universal label for unwanted email.'
Additionally, the team observed collective biases forming naturally that could not be traced back to individual agents.

In a final experiment, small groups of AI agents were able to steer the larger group towards a new naming convention.
This was pointed to as evidence of critical mass dynamics, where a small but determined minority can trigger a rapid shift in group behaviour once they reach a certain size, as found in human society.
Baronchelli said he believed the study 'opens a new horizon for AI safety research. It shows the depth of the implications of this new species of agents that have begun to interact with us and will co-shape our future.'
He added: 'Understanding how they operate is key to leading our coexistence with AI, rather than being subject to it. We are entering a world where AI does not just talk – it negotiates, aligns and sometimes disagrees over shared behaviours, just like us.'
The peer-reviewed study, Emergent Social Conventions and Collective Bias in LLM Populations, is published in the journal Science Advances.

GUINNESS EUROPEAN EQUITY INCOME: Forgotten fund turning gems into £100m moneymaker
After more than 11 years, Guinness European Equity Income is emerging from the shadows. Having been left to lie fallow as a result of the success of its sister fund Guinness Global Equity Income, it is beginning to gain some traction with investors and wealth managers. The fund, valued at a meagre £8 million a year ago, has now broken through £50 million. And co-fund manager Will James is confident it won't be long before it gets to £100million – maybe by the end of this year, but more likely within the next 12 months. To put these numbers into perspective, Global Equity Income, launched three years before European Equity Income, now has £4.9 billion of assets under its wing. 'The fund has momentum,' insists James. 'It's six times bigger than it was a year ago and it's in growth mode. It's rather encouraging.' James, who joined Nicholas Edwards on the fund in early 2024, believes one of the key drivers has been an improvement in the wider investment case for Europe. He says: 'As an investment proposition, Europe struggled to compete with US exceptionalism for many years. The result was that most investors' portfolios were underweight in Europe. 'But that US exceptionalism has now unwound, resulting in the appeal of dividend-friendly European companies being brought to a wider investor audience.' The fund's focus is on identifying European companies that are undervalued but which have strong balance sheets and cash flows largely impervious to the state of the economic backdrop. It side-steps businesses which have lots of debt. All these demands reduce an investible universe from 1,400 down to 200. Like other Guinness funds, European Equity Income then builds its portfolio around just 30 stocks, with holdings having broadly equal weightings. If a new company is brought into the fund, one has to be pushed out. The fund's exposure is determined by the companies it buys, not a view on the relative attractiveness of individual markets. This year, stakes in two businesses have been sold: Swiss-Swedish electrical engineering giant ABB and Finnish IT software company Tietoevry. They were replaced by energy technical specialist SPIE and Dutch-based BE Semiconductor Industries. James says: 'SPIE is generating an attractive dividend, and its work is essential in improving Europe's electrical infrastructure. 'BE Semiconductor Industries is a specialist in hybrid bonding, a process which enables semiconductors to be built that are more powerful and efficient than ever before.' Fund changes are infrequent – two holdings were sold last year, three the year before. Eight stocks have been in the fund from the word go, including Finnish industrial company Konecranes, Norwegian fish farm specialist Salmar, London-listed Unilever and French consumer staples business Danone. The fund's performance numbers stack up. Over the past one, three and five years it has outperformed the average for its peer group. Over five years, returns of 71 per cent compare with 56 per cent for the average European fund. Income is paid twice yearly and it has been in growth mode since 2020. An annual dividend last year of £6.21 a share compares with £3.13 in 2020. Later this month James and Edwards will meet financial experts in Bournemouth, Bristol and Leicester – all part of a mission to get the fund to £100 million. Annual fund charges are reasonable at 0.89 per cent and the annual dividend is around 3.6 per cent.

Britain must retain the means of making iron, says Sir Andrew Cook
Sir Andrew Cook is a leading British industrialist. 'Iron, Cold Iron, is the master of men all'. So reads Rudyard Kipling's memorable poem, and so might the steel men of Scunthorpe have recited with relief when learning their jobs had been saved from the Chinese wrecking ball. This steelworks, and its blast furnaces in particular, has been much in the news recently, the commentary fuelled more by ignorance and emotion than plain fact. For that fact is that a blast furnace, for all its association with the crag-jowelled ironmasters of nineteenth century England, is essential to any modern nation wishing to remain in what we still call the first world. Put aside the issues of pollution and climate change and consider instead the reality. You cannot make steel without iron, and you cannot make iron without a blast furnace. For iron does not exist naturally in its pure state. It is embedded within a brownish-coloured rock called iron ore. To extract the iron from the rock, the rock has first to be smelted. The term 'smelting', as you would expect, refers to melting plus something more. The 'something more' in this case is a chemical reaction which changes the fundamental composition of the material being smelted. In chemistry terms, the composition of the rock – iron ore – is changed into two separate materials, iron itself, and a residue which we call slag. This process can only be done in a blast furnace using coke, a fuel derived from coal, which provides both the heat and the carbon, the two being essential to the reaction. Iron ore plus carbon plus heat gives you iron plus slag. The slag goes mostly to waste – some is used to make roads. The iron is now ready to be made into steel. 'But can't you also make steel in an electric arc furnace? This is what we are told, and the arc furnace is so much greener. Isn't all that carbon dioxide that the blast furnace spews out avoided with the arc furnace?' I am sorry to disappoint you but the answer is 'No' on both counts. An electric arc furnace can only reprocess old scrap steel. Iron ore, being a rock, doesn't conduct electricity. Moreover, repeated recycling of old steel gradually de-purifies it, with levels of contaminants building up to a point where the steel cannot be used for certain essential purposes, notably military and medical use. So if you need pure steel, you need iron, and if you cannot supply the iron yourself, you have to import it. Someone, somewhere, has to use a blast furnace to make the iron from which is made the steel. Who is that someone? Well, if Britain has no blast furnaces, it has to be from across the English Channel, and possibly from a distant, and maybe potentially hostile part of the world. They can refuse to supply or charge us what they like. China uses its vast steel industry as a geo-political tool, its objective being to destroy those of weaker countries unwilling or unable to defend their own. Moreover, it is a known fact that the quality of Chinese steel cannot be trusted – just ask any construction worker. 'OK' you say, 'but what about the massive carbon footprint of the blast furnace?' Let there be no doubt, the blast furnace does emit a large quantity of carbon dioxide. But set this against three facts. Firstly, carbon dioxide is not a poison. It is an inert gas essential to plant growth. Without it, there is no food and the human race dies out. Secondly, if Britain does not have a blast furnace, the country's needs must be satisfied by someone else's. Global iron production indelibly emits a set quantity of CO2. The effect of Britain closing its blast furnaces on worldwide carbon emissions is precisely zero. And thirdly, don't get the idea the electric arc furnace is carbon-free. It also emits CO2, produced by its carbon electrodes, which steadily turn into gas as the melting process consumes them. As in most things, a balance must be struck. If Britain wishes to remain in the first rank of nations, it needs a steel industry, and this has to include at least one blast furnace. If it wishes to be self-sufficient in the manufacturing of steel products, essential to national security and well-being, it must retain the means of making iron. Britain has the skills, the equipment, and the essential coking coal from the Cumberland mine that has been short-sightedly refused planning permission by the authorities. Let common sense now overcome ignorance and emotion. The nation's security and industrial well-being are at stake.

UK ministers delay AI regulation amid plans for more ‘comprehensive' bill
Proposals to regulate artificial intelligence have been delayed by at least a year as UK ministers plan a bumper bill to regulate the technology and its use of copyrighted material. Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, intends to introduce a 'comprehensive' AI bill in the next parliamentary session to address concerns about issues including safety and copyright. This will not be ready before the next king's speech, and is likely to trigger concerns about delays to regulating the technology. The date for the next king's speech has not been set but several sources said it could take place in May 2026. Labour had originally planned to introduce a short, narrowly-drafted AI bill within months of entering office that would have been focused on large language models, such as ChatGPT. The legislation would have required companies to hand over their models for testing by the UK's AI Security Institute. It was intended to address concerns that AI models could become so advanced that they posed a risk to humanity. This bill was delayed, with ministers choosing to wait and align with Donald Trump's administration in the US because of concerns that any regulation might weaken the UK's attractiveness to AI companies. Ministers now want to include copyright rules for AI companies as part of the AI bill. 'We feel we can use that vehicle to find a solution on copyright,' a government source said. 'We've been having meetings with both creators and tech people and there are interesting ideas on moving forward. That work will begin in earnest once the data bill passes.' The government is already locked in a standoff with the House of Lords over copyright rules in a separate data bill. It would allow AI companies to train their models using copyrighted material unless the rights holder opts out. It has caused a fierce backlash from the creative sector, with artists including Elton John, Paul McCartney and Kate Bush throwing their weight behind a campaign to oppose the changes. This week, peers backed an amendment to the data bill that would require AI companies to disclose if they were using copyrighted material to train their models, in an attempt to enforce current copyright law. Ministers have refused to back down, however, even though Kyle has expressed regret about the way the government has gone about the changes. The government insists the data bill is not the right vehicle for the copyright issue and has promised to publish an economic impact assessment and series of technical reports on copyright and AI issues. Beeban Kidron, the film director and crossbench peer who has been campaigning on behalf of the creative sector, said on Friday that ministers 'have shafted the creative industries, and they have proved willing to decimate the UK's second-biggest industrial sector'. Kyle told the Commons last month that AI and copyright should be dealt with as part of a separate 'comprehensive' bill. Most of the UK public (88%) believe the government should have the power to stop the use of an AI product if it is deemed to pose a serious risk, according to a survey published by the Ada Lovelace Institute and the Alan Turing Institute in March. More than 75% said the government or regulators should oversee AI safety rather than private companies alone.
