Karan Johar Wins Legal Battle, Court Bars Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar Release
Last Updated:
The Bombay High Court upheld a judgment refusing to lift the stay on 'Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar', finding it likely infringed on Karan Johar's personality rights.
The Bombay High Court has decided not to lift the ban on the film Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, saying that it wrongly uses filmmaker Karan Johar's name. The court said this could harm his reputation and take unfair advantage of his fame.
The court's latest decision, made on Wednesday (May 7, 2025), supports an earlier order from March 7, 2025, which had stopped the film's release. That earlier order was based on a case filed by Johar, who said he had nothing to do with the film and never gave the makers permission to use his name.
A panel of two judges, Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Makarand Karnik, agreed that the filmmakers seemed to be using Johar's name and image to attract attention and make money, which is not allowed without consent.
In a previous order, Justice Riyaz Chagla had pointed out that the film's title clearly refers to Johar, especially since the characters are called 'Karan' and 'Johar' and are shown as Bollywood directors, just like him in real life. He said that this looked like a clear attempt to link the film with Johar and profit from his name.
Johar's lawyers argued that his name is well-known in the film industry and has become a brand. They said the film was trying to use this brand without permission, which is unfair and illegal. They also said the trailers and posters had already caused damage to his image.
The court agreed that only Karan Johar has the right to use his name for business, and others can't use it without his approval. A copy of the latest court ruling will be shared soon.

Anil Kapoor once begged to do B-grade film, producer called him a big liar after...,film became a hit, earned Rs..., movie is..
Anil Kapoor has been one of the most successful actors in the Bollywood industry. He has been in the industry for 40 years and has delivered several hits. However, did you know that there was a film which was considered a B-grade movie, and Anil Kapoor urged to have a role in it? Yes, you read that right! Made for Rs 8 crore, this film became a huge hit and earned Rs 28.8 crore. It featured some of the biggest actresses, including Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor, and more. If you are wondering which film we are talking about, then it is Andaaz. Released in 1994, Andaaz is once again in the headlines for its song 'Khada Hai Khada Hai'. Amidst this, producer and former Censor Board Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has openly called Anil Kapoor 'liar number one' in an interview. Nihalani clarified that Anil did not raise any objection during the shooting of the song. Rather, he himself used to listen to it again and again and used to say, 'This song will make our film a hit.' He even said, 'If he was uncomfortable, then why was he silent at that time?' In an interview with Vicky Lalwani, Nihalani mentioned that Juhi had some hesitations while doing certain scenes. He said, 'I explained to Juhi that the scene had meaning and was important to the story of the film.' On the other hand, Nihalani strongly objected to Anil calling Andaaz a B-grade film. He said, 'I remember that interview. I had once reprimanded him. The film which he is calling 'B grade' today, he wanted to do it at any cost.' Nihalani claimed that not only Anil, but also others were eager to be a part of the film. 'Karisma Kapoor too had requested me. At that time, everyone wanted to work in my film, and Anil Kapoor was one of them.'
