Hundreds of US Marines 'mobilised' over LA protests, source says
Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here Roughly 500 US Marines based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Centre in California have been mobilised to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, according to three people familiar with the matter. They will join the thousands of National Guard troops that were activated by President Donald Trump over the weekend without the consent of California's governor or LA's mayor. The deployment of the full Marine battalion marks a significant escalation in Trump's use of the military as a show of force against protesters, but it is still unclear what their task will be once in LA, the sources said. (Marine Combat Centre) Like the National Guard troops, they are prohibited from conducting law enforcement activity like making arrests unless Trump invokes the Insurrection Act. One of the people familiar with the Marine mobilisation said they will be augmenting the Guard presence on the ground in LA. Over 2000 members of the California National Guard have been activated by the president, but only about 300 have been deployed to the streets of LA so far. (AP Photo/Eric Thayer) Those initial 300 people were on a routine National Guard drill weekend when they were mobilised, which is why they were able to arrive so quickly, the person familiar said; it can take up to 72 hours for other Guardsmen to be mobilised. The Marines are expected to bolster some of the Guard members who have been deployed to LA in the last two days, this person said. While their tasks have not been specified publicly, they could include assignments like crowd control or establishing perimeter security. Lawyers within the Defence Department are also still finalising language around the use of force guidelines for the troops being mobilised, but the person familiar said it will likely mirror the military's standing rules of the use of force. military

Australian news and politics live: Richard Marles says Government warned about Pentagon AUKUS review
Scroll down for the latest news and updates. Former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has suggested it is time for the Australian Government to 'wake up' as both the UK and the US 'review' the AUKUS deal. 'The UK is conducting a review of AUKUS,' he said on X. 'The US DoD is conducting a review of AUKUS. 'But Australia, which has the most at stake, has no review. 'Our Parliament to date has been the least curious and least informed. Time to wake up?' Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles says it's 'natural' that the Trump Adminstation would want to review the AUKUS agreement after the Pentagon launched an inquiery to ensure it met US President Donald Trump's 'America First' agenda. 'We are committed to AUKUS and we look forward to working closely with the US on the review. The United States advised Australia and the UK of the review. 'It is natural that the Administration would want to examine this major undertaking including progress and delivery, just as the UK Government recently concluded an AUKUS review and reaffirmed its support including through the appointment of Sir Stephen Lovegrove as its AUKUS Adviser. 'There is bipartisan support in the United States with the passage of important provisions in the National Defence Authorization Act in 2023 to enable the transfer of US Virginia class submarines to Australia, and to enable Australians to work on maintenance activities of US Virginia class submarines.' 'Our engagement with the Trump Administration and across the full political spectrum in the United States has shown clear and consistent support for AUKUS. 'We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the Trump Administration on this historic project.' Read the full story.
