Scientists uncover hidden maths depicted in tree branch patterns in da Vinci and Mondrian artwork
Trees depicted in the artwork of famous painters like Leonardo da Vinci and Piet Mondrian follow the math behind their branching pattern in nature, a new study says.
This hidden math in some abstract paintings may even underlie our ability to recognise such artwork as depictions of trees, according to the research, published in the journal PNAS Nexus.
Trees in nature follow a 'self-similar' branching pattern called a fractal, in which the same structures repeat at smaller and smaller scales from the trunk to the branch tip.
In the new study, scientists mathematically examined the scaling of branch thickness in depictions of trees in artworks.
Researchers derived mathematical rules for proportions between branch diameters, and the approximate number of branches of different diameters.
'We analyse trees in artwork as self-similar, fractal forms, and empirically compare art with theories of branch thickness developed in biology,' researchers explained.
Leonardo da Vinci observed that tree limbs preserve their thickness as they branch.
The Italian Renaissance artist used a parameter called α to determine the relationships between the diameters of the various branches.
He asserted that if the thickness of a branch is the same as the summed thickness of its two smaller branches then the parameter α would be 2.
Researchers analysed trees in art from several parts of the world, including those in the 16th-century Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in Ahmedabad, India, Edo period Japanese painting, and 20th-century abstract art.
They found that the values of α in these artworks range from 1.5 to 2.8, similar to the range of this value in natural trees.
'We find α in the range 1.5 to 2.8 corresponding to the range of natural trees,' scientists wrote.
'While fractal dimension varies considerably across trees and artwork, we find that the range of α in case studies of great artworks across cultures and time periods corresponds to the range of real trees,' they said.
Even abstract paintings such as Piet Mondrian's 1912 cubist Gray Tree, which doesn't visually show treelike colours, can be identified as trees if a realistic value for α is used, researchers say.
'Abstract paintings with realistic α are recognisable as trees, whereas an otherwise similar painting is no longer distinctly recognisable as a tree,' they say.
The new study offers a perspective to 'appreciate and recreate the beauty of trees,' scientists say.
It also highlights that art and science can provide complementary lenses on natural and human worlds, they added.

Crashed lander looks back at Earth from the moon

Resilience, a lunar lander built and operated by the Japanese company ispace, was part of the Hakuto-R Mission to deploy a "Moonhouse," a tiny colorful art piece, on the moon, while also exploring its surface features using its Tenacious rover. After launching on Jan. 15 from Florida's Space Coast on Hakuto-R Mission 2, ispace's Resilience lander arrived in lunar orbit on May 6. The lander then deftly shifted its path to an orbit just 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the moon's surface. On May 27, Resilience took this photo, with a view of Japan being blocked by the clouds on Earth's surface, according to an ispace tweet. Resilience hovers over the moon in its lunar orbit, aiming for the Mare Frigoris ("Sea of Cold") on the moon's near side, as a landing site. With Resilience, the Japanese company ispace hoped to be one of the first to land a private spacecraft on the moon. Unfortunately, its first mission, in April 2023, ended in failure as the crashed during its touchdown attempt. Undeterred, ispace — in collaboration with other agencies like NASA and JAXA — designed and tested Resilience as part of the Hakuto-R Mission 2 (the R stands for "reboot"). Resilience carried five payloads, including a small 11-pound (5 kilograms) rover named Tenacious, which would have been used to collect lunar samples, according to NASA. Unfortunately, the landing for Resilience, scheduled on June 5, 2025, came to an abrupt halt when telemetry data from the lander stopped coming in right before the soft landing, leaving the world wondering what happened to Resilience. A few hours later, ispace announced that Resilience likely crashed on the moon, bringing an end to the mission. Fishermen catch ‘twilight zone' creature marking its first record in Taiwan
Commercial fishing vessels trawling the waters off the coast of Taiwan pulled in several deep-sea creatures never before reported in the region. Four Japanese lanternfish were collected from northeastern and southwestern Taiwan, marking the first time the species has been recorded in Taiwanese waters, according to a study published June 9 in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria. The species inhabits the mesopelagic or 'twilight zone,' at depths below 980 feet during the day and migrate up to depths of 65-650 feet at night, according to the study. These are the southernmost records of Japanese lanternfish, researchers said. The species was previously only known from the Northern and Central Pacific, according to the study. The specimens were described as having large mouths, pale slender bodies with pockets of scale outlined in black, 'dusky' fins, and a 'uniformly black' head, according to the study. While the Taiwan specimens shared many of the same characteristics as other Japanese lanternfish, 'several major differences were noted' when compared with other specimens, including eye diameter and distance between eyes, fin length, and the number of pelvic fin rays, according to researchers. 'We suggest that more specimens are needed to determine if these differences are intraspecific variations or not,' researchers said. The research team included Yo Su, Jian-Fu Huang and Fan-Yi Yang.

Spongy moth population dropping, not gone in Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the population has dropped in recent years, but the state isn't in the clear. The invasive pests are still destroying tens of thousands of acres of trees each year across Michigan. Spongy moths were responsible for defoliating trees across 1.35 million acres in 2021. Those numbers have since dropped notably. The moths were responsible for approximately 386,000 acres in 2022, 156,000 acres in 2023 and roughly 169,000 acres in 2024. What to do if you find invasive Japanese knotweed 'These hungry caterpillars often group together on deciduous trees — those that shed their leaves seasonally,' the DNR says. 'They can strip trees of leaves and release BB-sized pellets of frass (droppings) on whatever is below.' The DNR says the caterpillars prefer oak and aspen leaves but have been found on hundreds of other plant species. from Michigan State University say spongy moth eggs are hatching now in the Lower Peninsula. The easiest way to find traces of the moths, before they are eating your leaves, is to look for egg masses. They are tan, fuzzy and about the size of a quarter. If the mass has small holes in it or appears to be falling apart, the eggs have likely already hatched. If not, you can get rid of the egg masses by drowning them in a bucket of soapy water or burning it. Ask Ellen: Why are invasive species so bad? If they have already hatched, the DNR recommends sweeping the caterpillars into a bucket of soapy water and allowing them to soak overnight. The DNR says there are available that are effective at killing the caterpillars/moths with little impact on humans, pets and other insects. There are other treatment options as well, including a 'Cut a strip of burlap 18 inches wide and long enough to go around the tree trunk and overlap,' the DNR says. 'Tie a string around the center of the band to make a two-layered skirt around the trunk. When the caterpillars climb the tree to eat, they will get caught in the band. You can scrape them into a bucket of soapy water and dispose.' The good news is trees can typically survive exposure to spongy moths.
