PMC and the state health department are awaiting an update on guidelines issued by the Central govt.
At present, there are no active Covid cases in any city hospital.
Dr Nina Borade, health chief, PMC, said, "There is no active Covid patient in the city right now. As per some media reports, an 87-year-old man from Manjari was infected with Covid, however, he was discharged on May 15. In themonth of May, we had only one patient, who has completely recovered now."
Borade appealed to citizens to take care and stay vigilant.
"We willtake action once we receive guidelines from the public health department. Instructions will also be given to private hospitals in this regard," thePMC health chief said.
Borade said Covid tests are not being conducted in civic hospitals at the moment.
Although the pandemic was declared over by the World Health Organisation in May 2023, the virus continues to remain endemic within the environment. As of now, there are about three active Covid cases in the state. All of them have been isolated at home as they exhibited only mild symptoms, said state health officials.

New Delhi: Amid the rising Covid-19 cases in India, any minister who is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi must get an RT-PCR test done, sources said. The decision comes as all BJP functionaries from Delhi, including the Chief Minister, are scheduled to meet the Prime Minister at his residence today evening. All the ministers would need to undergo the Covid-19 test, sources said. Additionally, in cases when PM Modi carries out a rally - all the officials present on the stage will also need to show their RT-PCR test. India's active coronavirus cases have climbed to 7,121, with Kerala fighting the latest resurgence of infections - followed by Gujarat and Delhi. According to the data available on the official website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 306 new cases were added to the active case count since Friday. Kerala has recorded 2,223 cases, Gujarat 1,223, Delhi 757, and West Bengal 747. Maharashtra has recorded a total of 615 cases so far, while Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have reported 459 and 229 cases, respectively. Tamil Nadu has reported 204 cases, Puducherry 10, Haryana 125, Andhra Pradesh 72, Madhya Pradesh 65, and Goa six. Official data shows a total of 74 deaths since January due to the deadly virus so far, which began in 2020. Experts have warned that senior citizens are at the highest risk of contracting coronavirus. While states are on alert, officials have said that the coronavirus cases are mild in nature and there is no need to panic. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the genome sequencing of samples in the west and south has shown that the new variants are sub-variants of Omicron, a strain that was behind the big Covid wave in India in 2022. These are LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1, ICMR chief Dr Rajiv Behl said.

India recorded 306 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, pushing the country's active caseload to 7,121, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday. During the same period, six Covid-related deaths were reported — three from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one from Maharashtra. Among the deceased was a 43-year-old male with a weakened immune system, while the remaining fatalities involved elderly individuals with underlying respiratory and chronic health conditions. A day earlier, India had reported 324 fresh Covid-19 cases, bringing the active case tally to 6,815. Three fatalities were recorded on that day — one each from Delhi, Jharkhand, and Kerala. Among them was a 44-year-old man with a history of hypothyroidism and hypertension; the other two were elderly individuals with chronic respiratory and other health complications. India is currently witnessing a gradual uptick in Covid-19 cases, attributed to emerging variants including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the newly identified NB.1.8.1 subvariant. 'India Equipped To Tackle XFG Variant' The emergence of the XFG variant is part of the natural evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to Prof. (Dr) Balram Bhargava, former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and former Secretary of the Department of Health Research. He noted that India is well-prepared to detect and respond to new variants quickly, thanks to the wide availability of rapid molecular diagnostic tools like Truenat. According to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), 163 cases of the XFG variant have been recently identified across the country. Dr. Bhargava explained that the XFG variant contains mutations that may enhance its ability to bind more effectively to human cells and evade immune defences. 'Early reports suggest that the variant has high immune escape potential, but there is no current evidence to indicate increased severity. However, as the virus adapts, India's diagnostic infrastructure has adapted since the very first wave. RT-PCR remains the cornerstone of COVID-19 diagnostics, and the widespread deployment of rapid molecular platforms like Truenat puts India in a strong position to detect and contain emerging variants swiftly—even in remote and resource-limited settings," he said.
