(Reuters) -Franco Mastantuono took time out from preparing for a geography exam to score a spectacular curling free kick which helped River Plate beat arch-rivals Boca Juniors 2-1 in Sunday's Argentine Superclasico.
"Preparing for the geography exam," River Plate posted on X on Monday with a picture of 17-year-old Mastantuono, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, lining up his shot from nearly 30 metres out.
Mastantuono had been scheduled to sit the exam on Monday but was worried he had insufficient time to revise, so River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo called his school to request a postponement which was granted, Argentine media reported.

Soccer-Uruguay near World Cup qualification with 2-0 win over Venezuela
Soccer Football - World Cup - South American Qualifiers - Uruguay v Venezuela - Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay - June 10, 2025 Uruguay's Facundo Pellistri in action with Venezuela's Miguel Navarro REUTERS/Andres Cuenca MONTEVIDEO (Reuters) -Uruguay took a step closer to securing a 2026 World Cup spot with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario on Tuesday, a victory which also snapped a four-match winless run in South American qualifiers. Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute, heading in at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner. Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that secures Marcelo Bielsa's side of at least an inter-confederation playoff berth. In other qualifiers, Colombia led already-qualified Argentina 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Luis Díaz goal, while second-placed Ecuador can secure a World Cup spot if they avoid defeat in Peru. In Sao Paulo, Paraguay will qualify with a win or a draw against Brazil, while the hosts can book their place in the tournament with a victory. Soccer-Gareca steps down as Chile coach after failure to qualify for World Cup
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - CONMEBOL Qualifiers - Paraguay v Chile - Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asuncion, Paraguay - March 20, 2025, Chile coach Ricardo Gareca reacts during the match REUTERS/Cesar Olmedo/File Photo SANTIAGO, Jun 10 (Reuters) -Ricardo Gareca confirmed he has stepped down as Chile head coach after their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup ended with a 2-0 away loss to Bolivia on Tuesday. "We made a decision, with the coaching staff (...) with the entire delegation. We told them that we want to ease the situation," said Gareca during a brief press conference after the match in El Alto, where he did not take questions. "The results never went with us, at any time. We did not produce results, Chile is in a situation that no one would have wished for." The defeat left Chile bottom of the South American table with only 10 points and two games remaining in the qualifying round. "La Roja" will miss out on the World Cup for the third time in a row, after failing to qualify for Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 following a historic era that saw them win the Copa America in 2015 and 2016. Under Argentine manager Gareca, who was appointed in 2024, Chile only managed one win in 13 official games. Golf-Well-rested Scheffler does Oakmont homework ahead of U.S. Open test
Jun 10, 2025; Oakmont, Pennsylvania, USA; Scottie Scheffler plays his shot from the third tee during a practice round for the U.S. Open golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images OAKMONT, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -Scottie Scheffler may not have been as prepared as he could have been for last year's U.S. Open, but on Tuesday the tournament favourite at Oakmont Country Club said he was well-rested and had done his homework ahead of golf's toughest test. Scheffler arrived at the 2024 U.S. Open fresh off a win at the Memorial Tournament and made the cut at Pinehurst without a shot to spare. He later admitted he did not feel he was properly prepared for that year's third major. So this year world number one Scheffler took a different approach. He still played and won the Memorial, which was moved back to its traditional spot on the calendar, and then sat out last week's Canadian Open to focus on the U.S. Open. "Having the week off was really important for me to get home, get some rest, recover, and I showed up here on Sunday and was able to play maybe 11 holes and really get used to the conditions," said Scheffler. "It feels much more like my normal major prep versus last year where you're coming in from basically a major championship test, coming into another one is pretty challenging." Since the calendar turned to May, Scheffler has matched the PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record with a 31-under total at TPC Craig Ranch, won the PGA Championship by five strokes, finished fourth at Colonial and won at Muirfield Village by four strokes. The challenge ahead for Scheffler, whose three wins so far in 2025 came during his last four starts, will be passing the daunting test that Oakmont Country Club presents given its narrow fairways and penal rough. "This is probably the hardest golf course that we'll play, maybe ever, and that's pretty much all it is. It's just a different type of test," said Scheffler. Given his form Scheffler is naturally a heavy favourite and will have plenty of support as he makes his way around Oakmont, perhaps especially from those who have placed wagers on him. Scheffler said he hears plenty from those who bet on golf and that was why he deleted his account on peer-to-peer payment service Venmo as some people would send him part of their winnings or demand he cover their losses. "I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn't win," said Scheffler. "It wasn't a good feeling." "I don't remember the most that somebody would send me. Maybe a couple bucks here or there. That didn't happen nearly as much as the requests did," Scheffler added. A win this week for Scheffler would put him alongside Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth as the only active players with three legs of the career Grand Slam of golf's four majors.
