‘Thanks, Mom — You Were Right!' Doctors Share Mothers' Health Tips

With Mother's Day approaching, we asked five top doctors for maternal health tips that showed just how smart their moms really were.
'Gargle This, It'll Help'
'Growing up, I was prone to frequent episodes of sinusitis, congestion, and cold,' says Jamal Rana, MD, a cardiologist with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. 'My mom would add a teaspoon of salt in hot water and make me gargle twice a day.' Rana still makes this DIY gargle solution, which always seems to help.
Why Mom was right: Research suggests that gargling or rinsing your nose with saline can clear phlegm and dislodge or inhibit viruses. A study in the Journal of Global Health said people infected with COVID-19 who gargled and rinsed their noses with a saline solution four times per day for 14 days had lower hospitalization rates than a control group of people sick with COVID-19.
'You're Getting the Shot'
Seven-year-old Walter Orenstein was scared of needles. It was 1955 and 'I didn't know what polio was and had no idea what the benefits were,' he says. 'So I was not happy when my mother said I had to get a shot.' Now Orenstein, professor emeritus in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine, appreciates what his mother, who had a science background, told him: ' Better you should cry than I should cry.' He begrudgingly got the shot and decades later became a leader in infectious disease research.
Why Mom was right: Shots save lives by reducing risk to you and the people around you. Research published in The Lancet suggests that since 1974, vaccination has prevented 154 million deaths worldwide. As of 2024, a child younger than 10 is 40% more likely to survive to their next birthday than they would have been if our collective history of vaccination hadn't existed. Measles vaccination has made the biggest difference, the researchers say.
'Don't Order the Nuggets'
'As kids, we were always chasing the sugar and the processed foods, especially in my generation,' says Benjamin Click, MD, assistant professor of medicine in gastroenterology at the University of Colorado. (He was born in 1985.) His mom made healthy meals and steered him toward fresh fruits and vegetables, but he wasn't interested. 'I just wish I'd listened a little bit sooner and maybe cut out some years of McDonald's in my past,' he says.
Click loved chicken nuggets as a kid, and they became his go-to as a teen, when he'd grab some after lacrosse games or late at night. Cheap, fast, and tasty, sure — but his triglycerides count hit like a scolding. Today, he eats better — and with kids of his own, he appreciates his mom's message. 'It's very fascinating to watch the science support what my mom's been saying for many, many years,' he says.
Why Mom was right: Fried foods like chicken nuggets are usually high in calories and low in beneficial nutrients like fiber. They can also contain toxic byproducts like acrylamide that form during frying. The journal Heart published a study that said people who ate the most fried foods were 37% more likely to have heart failure, 28% more likely to have major cardiovascular events, and 22% more likely to have coronary heart disease than people who ate the least fried food.
'Do Not Give Up'
As a child, Steven P. Cohen, MD, was teased for being short. His mom steered him toward martial arts classes and supported him through years of intense, focused study. 'I became a black belt and then started to compete nationally and get ranked,' Cohen says. 'But it's hard when you're a kid and everybody's going out, and you're going to class.' Both his mother and father encouraged him to stick with it. He built resilience that he credits for his health and success today. He's now the Edmond I. Eger Professor of Anesthesiology and division chief of pain medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Why Mom was right: It comes down to realizing long-term success requires short short-term struggles. Knowing that helps you develop effective habits for good health and reducing pain. Habits like getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, and controlling weight. 'Getting up early before work and exercising or exercising after work is not easy,' he says. 'It's not easy to stop smoking or to lose weight, but these things absolutely work.' For chronic pain, these lifestyle changes might even work as well or better than more controversial treatments like surgery, injections, medications, and alternative care, he says.
'Eat All the Vegetables. Fruit, Too'
When Diana Londono, MD, a urologist at Emanate Health in Glendora, California, was growing up, every meal was a learning opportunity with a different colorful vegetable. 'Our diet was very varied, and it was always kind of like a class in nutrition,' she says. 'My mom would explain the benefits of each food.' Those carrots? Vitamin A to helps your eyes. Those beets and Brussels sprouts can help you poop because they've got fiber. Back then, Londono would roll her eyes. Now, she's thankful that her well-rounded diet has helped her stay healthy. She's passing the same lessons to her kids. They eat the same meals she does, enjoying a spectrum of nutritious foods.
Why Mom was right: Eating produce is important, of course — a recent study in the journal Public Health showed that eating fruits and vegetables two or more times per day reduced early death risk by 20% and 17%, respectively, compared to eating them less than three times per week. Mixing it up is also helpful. Research suggests that eating a diverse range of fruits and vegetables makes you more likely to hit the recommended targets for vitamins, minerals, and fiber intake. A varied diet of fruits and vegetables is also linked with benefits such as a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers and lower stress levels. In children, vegetable diversity might reduce inflammation, an early marker of long-term health.

These usually stay in your bladder, they can travel up to your kidney, making kidney problems worse. Fortunately, regularly consuming cranberries can help you avoid this unwelcome situation. Plus, cranberries have antioxidants that can help fight inflammation, and they can boost your heart and digestive health. It turns out, these tart berries aren't just for the Thanksgiving table. 5. Blueberries We've talked about some of the best foods for kidneys, but you can take it a step further. The question is: What foods help repair kidneys? Blueberries deliver. Dark, leafy greens There are plenty of reasons to turn to dark, leafy greens like spinach or kale. Garlic Another antioxidant-rich, inflammation-fighting food, garlic also contains a specific compound called allicin. For people with CKD, allicin — an active compound found in garlic — worked just as effectively to help protect kidney health as a prescription drug. If you're looking for the best foods for your kidneys, garlic has to make the list. Plus, it's an excellent way to add flavor when you're skimping on salt. 9. Onions From the same family as garlic, onions give you another excellent and salt-free way to add flavor (bonus points if you saute them in olive oil). Onions also deliver important nutrients like vitamins B6 and C, manganese and copper. They also contain quercetin, a chemical that can help your body fight cancer, and organic sulfur compounds that can reduce your risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Getty Images 10. Cauliflower Cauliflower brings the crunch, paired with plenty of vitamins C, B6, B9 and K, along with fiber. Cauliflower does contain some potassium and phosphorus, though, so while it makes the list of foods good for kidneys, people with CKD may want to moderate their intake. 11. Egg whites Egg whites are specifically recommended for people with kidney problems. They give you a way to increase your protein levels -- which can be important with later-stage CKD, especially if you're on dialysis. 12. Arugula Arugula is packed with nutrients your body needs like magnesium, iron, calcium and vitamins A, B9, C and K. Plus, it's antioxidant-rich and has glucosinolates, which can help your body protect itself against a range of cancer types. You can eat arugula raw (it's a great salad base), but you can also sprinkle it over whatever you're whipping up. It's great on pizzas, in omelets and with pasta, for example. 13. Apples Apples deliver the cancer-fighting quercetin and fiber that can help to keep your cholesterol and blood sugar at healthy levels. They've got plenty of antioxidants. Better yet, they're easy to work into your diet. Leave a bowl of apples on your counter and you'll have a kidney-healthy, grab-and-go snack whenever you need one.

Premature Newborn Dies in Ontario After Catching Measles From Unvaccinated Mother

A premature newborn in Ontario, Canada, has died after contracting measles—the first death this year linked to an ongoing outbreak of the vaccine-preventable disease in the country. Ontario health officials reported the death Thursday. The child caught the viral infection from their mother, who was not vaccinated from measles. Canada, the U.S., and Mexico have all faced surging outbreaks of measles in 2025, fueled by low vaccination rates in certain regions. 'It is with deep sadness that I confirm that an infant, born prematurely and infected with measles, has tragically passed away in southwestern Ontario,' said Kieran Moore, the chief medical officer of health in Ontario, in a statement. The ongoing measles outbreaks in North America are believed to have first started in Ontario last fall. By January 2025, measles began to hit parts of Texas, with cases eventually spreading to nearby states and Northern Mexico. The outbreaks have largely occurred in rural Mennonite communities where people often forego routine vaccinations and other healthcare services provided by outside doctors. The U.S. and Mexico have each reported around 1,000 cases of measles this year, while over 2,700 cases have been reported in Canada, mostly in Ontario. But these numbers are almost certainly an underestimate of the problem. According to Moore, the child contracted measles while in the womb, which may have contributed to their premature birth. The child did have other medical complications unrelated to the virus, however, so it's possible that the infection may not have been the primary or sole factor behind their death. Measles in general has a very low fatality rate, but it's highly contagious among unvaccinated people and is known to be more dangerous to developing fetuses and very young children. Over 100,000 people died from measles globally in 2023, according to the World Health Organization, most of whom were children under the age of five. Though this is Canada's first death linked to measles this year, it's not the first in North America. There have been three confirmed measles deaths in the U.S. so far, while more than 100 people (mostly children) have been hospitalized. Unlike the latest death, two of these U.S. deaths occurred in children with no pre-existing health issues. Measles has been resurgent in much of the world as of late, aided by declining vaccination rates. But while this problem has been building up over time, the situation in the U.S. is only expected to worsen under the current presidential administration. Many of President Donald Trump's appointees—in particular Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—have regularly spread misinformation about the safety of vaccines, including the combination measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. Kennedy has both downplayed the ongoing outbreaks and supported dubious measles treatments with little to no evidence behind them, such as cod liver oil supplements. Many Americans today remain woefully in the dark about the severity of these outbreaks and the importance of vaccination. 'Anyone who is unvaccinated is at risk and I urge everyone, but especially those who may become pregnant, to ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, which will protect both a parent and baby. This vaccine has been safely used for over 50 years and is highly effective,' Moore noted in his announcement of the child's death.
