First look at ‘Karl,' SF Bay Ferry's new high-speed, low-emission vessel: video
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — On Friday, the newest addition to the San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet was officially unveiled. Dubbed 'MV Karl,' the state-of-the-art ferry is the cleanest high-speed passenger ferry in the U.S. and the first delivered that meets the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) new emissions limits for commercial harbor craft.
A Dorado class ferry, Karl is powered by four U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) Tier 4 engines and equipped with diesel particulate filters, which is a first for the passenger ferry industry.
'MV Karl is a perfect example of what is possible when cleaner transportation options are embraced and brought to market. This passenger ferry will provide Bay Area residents and visitors alike with an alternative that recognizes the importance of clean air and public health in the communities adjacent to the Bay,' said CARB Chair Randolph.
Karl will be among the last diesel vessels that will be added to the SF Bay Ferry Fleet. The agency recently approved SF Bay Ferry's plan to accelerate adopting zero-emission technology for new short-run and existing transbay routes.
The first five battery-electric ferries SF Bay Ferry will add to its fleet are currently under construction. The first of these vessels is expected to be in service by early 2027.
The ferry was named in a region-wide selection process with names submitted by Bay Area students. The name Karl was submitted by a local high school student Sean O., who chose the name on honor of the Bay Area's iconic fog, which was named 'Karl the Fog' by a social media account launched in August 2010.
The name Karl received the most votes in a public poll and was approved by SF Bay Ferry's Board of Directors.
Karl features a fully enclosed upper deck area that increased its indoor capacity by 73 seats, giving it a total capacity of 320 passengers. SF Bay Ferry plans to have MV Karl begin service on the Vallejo route next month.

‘A new era': Crypto billionaire's $9.4M gift funding new SFPD surveillance hub
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie thanked a local tech billionaire on Thursday for funding a new downtown headquarters for the San Francisco Police Department's Real-Time Investigation Center (RTIC). The center houses technological resources that assist police officers in the field in real-time, such as drones, automated license plate readers and public safety cameras. The $9.4 million in funding for the new RTIC space was donated by San Francisco-based enterprise blockchain company Ripple, city officials said. The company's cofounder and CEO, Chris Larsen, said the enhanced center will 'help usher in a new era of accountability.' The current location is inside the Hall of Justice and operates with 'outdated wiring and other infrastructure challenges,' according to the mayor's office. The new location is said to feature updated equipment and other enhancements donated by the San Francisco Police Community Foundation and Crankstart. 'RTIC has already supported hundreds of arrests, with crime down 30% citywide, and with this new facility, the SFPD will have the tools and the technology it needs to take this work to the next level and help our officers keep our streets safe,' Lurie said in a news release Thursday. 'I want to thank Chris Larsen for his continued dedication to our police officers and the safety of all San Franciscans.' The center contributed to more than 500 arrests in 2024, according to the mayor's office. Local hot pot chain opens outpost at San Jose mall, its sixth Bay Area location
(KRON) — A rising Bay Area hot pot chain opened its newest location this week in San Jose. East Bay-founded Mumu Hot Pot opened Monday, June 2 at the Westfield Oakridge mall in San Jose, the business announced in a press release. Mumu Hot Pot is located next to the BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse on the southwest exterior of the mall. It joins the list of 30 eateries at Westfield Oakridge located at 925 Blossom Hill Road. There are more than 200 customers who can be seated inside the restaurant, according to the release. Mumu Hoto is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Photos of the restaurant be viewed below.
