With new car and Munich crown, Zverev puts lean spell in rear-view mirror
April 21 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev arrived at the Munich Open on the back of his " worst period" since a career-threatening ankle injury in 2022 and it was little surprise the German was beaming from ear to ear after winning his first title of the season on Sunday.
After failing to go past the quarter-finals in his last six events, Zverev sealed a 6-2 6-4 victory over Ben Shelton in the final in Bavaria and leapfrogged Carlos Alcaraz into second in the world rankings after the Spaniard lost the Barcelona final.
Zverev also collected the keys to a shiny new BMW on his 28th birthday and will now look to leave his disappointing spell in the rear-view mirror.
"It's extremely special," said Zverev, who has won 24 titles on the elite men's tour including six on home soil.
"I always love winning tournaments in Germany. It's probably the most special thing that I can do.
"It's definitely a great birthday present. I knew I had to play my best tennis, Ben has been playing extremely well," added Zverev, who got off to a fast start this year by reaching the Australian Open final.
Zverev had banished memories of his brutal ankle injury at the French Open in 2022 by reaching last year's title clash and he will be primed to challenge holder Alcaraz again at Roland Garros when the year's second Grand Slam begins on May 25.
"This was one of the best weeks you can have as a tennis player," Zverev added.
"I don't think we need to talk about the last few weeks anymore. I'm just so happy with the title and with the level that I managed to play at."

The American claimed her second Grand Slam title with a comeback win over the No.1 seed. Gauff came from a set down to win 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4 as Sabalenka struggled to deal with both the windy conditions and her emotions at Roland Garros. The No. 1 seed expressed her disappointment openly, remarking that she had played "terrible tennis" before doubling down in her post-match press conference, claiming that, had Iga Swiatek made it to the championship match, she would have won. Gauff, 21, also referenced her recent dominating win over Swiatek at the Madrid Open. "Last time I played - no shade to Iga or anything, but I played her and I won in straight sets. Yeah, I don't think that's a fair thing to say, because anything can really happen. "Yeah, honestly the way Aryna was playing the last few weeks, she was the favourite to win. So I think she was the best person that I could have played in the final. "Her being No.1 in the world was the best person to play, so I think I got the hardest matchup just if you go off stats alone." If she had to choose, Gauff would have preferred to face Swiatek. However, after winning her second major title, what could have been was of little importance. Gauff believed that, no matter her opponent, she stood a good chance of winning, an attitude she carried into the match. "Obviously Iga being a champion here, it was going to be a tough match either way," the champ added. "But, yeah, I think regardless of who I played, I think I had a good shot to win, and I definitely had that belief," she explained. "If you asked me, honestly speaking to you guys who I wanted to play, it was Iga just because I felt Aryna was playing so good, and she was. "But also, Iga is a tough opponent too. So honestly, neither of them would have been the better shot. But, you know, it played out how it played out. Yeah, that's why I'm here today."

England booed after unimpressive 1-0 win against Andorra in World Cup qualifier
England won Saturday's World Cup qualifier match against Andorra 1-0, facing boos at the end of both halves for a seemingly unimpressive performance. This was Thomas Tuchel's first away game in charge of the national team and the German coach had called for relentlessness and patience as they faced off against their opponents, ranked 173rd in FIFA's standings. An absence of goals in the first half, jeers from their own supporters in the stands, and some fans making an early exit seemed to fail to deliver on either. This was the third time England have failed to score a first-half goal against Andorra in Barcelona, where the minnows kept out Steve McClaren's side in 2007 and Fabio Capello's team the following year. Harry Kane scored the winning goal for England early in the second half, but the team lost momentum and failed to add to that total. 'I am not happy with the performance, of course,' German coach Tuchel said on ITV1. 'We started quite well in the first 20-25 minutes, which was the only part where I had the feeling it was only a matter of time, we created a lot of half-chances and from set-pieces, that we will score and keep on going. 'But we lost completely the momentum and couldn't get it back through the whole of the first half. 'We got a little bit of it back in the first 15 minutes of the second half and then ended up in a period which was by far not good enough – lack of urgency, lack of quality and lack of energy. 'We have to play until the 93rd minute. I didn't like the lack of urgency in the end,' he said. 'It did not match the occasion at all, it is still a qualifier away from home, I didn't like it at all." Speaking after the match, England captain Harry Kane accepted it 'wasn't the greatest performance." The Bayern Munich forward added: 'I don't think many people will remember this one but we can learn from it. 'It is very hot here, a dry pitch, probably similar conditions to maybe next year at the World Cup, so we will go away and analyse." Football commentator and former player and coach Roy Keane had similarly scathing words to add on England's performance. 'We try and make excuses for England with the end of the season and it's been tough on the players. 'I thought the first half was okay but when they scored the goal it felt it was job done. 'I was really disappointed with England's attitude after the goal went in. The manager can't be happy with that effort in the last half an hour. 'I felt like some of the players looked like they got bored in the last half an hour and I don't like to see that.' England play a friendly against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday night and Tuchel is expecting a much-improved display.
