KUCHING (June 28): The Australia Northern Territory Government hosted a networking dinner here in conjunction with its Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill's visit to Sarawak recently.
Cahill, who led a seven-member delegation, was in the state capital to discuss potential cooperation between Sarawak and the Northern Territory, given their shared interest in a number of common areas.
Representing the state government at the event was Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee, said Sarawak Australia Business Chamber president Rodger Chan in a statement today.
In his speech at the dinner, Chan said the programme marked Cahill's first visit to Sarawak.
'This is significant as she has skipped other parts of Malaysia.
'This shows the Northern Territory Government's and her seriousness in engaging with Sarawak.
'There is also a Department of Asian Relations in her government, and this shows how the Northern Territory Government is serious about and focusing on Asia,' he said.
Chan added that Cahill's visit to Sarawak reignited the long-standing relationship between Australia and Sarawak, noting that this year marked the 70th anniversary of Australia-Malaysia diplomatic relationship.
'It also marks the 80th anniversary of the landing of Australia and ANZAC forces landing in Bario under Operation Semut. In fact, Australia was here more than 80 years ago to help Sarawak in defending the Japanese occupation,' added Chan.
He said since the 1950s, many Sarawakians had, under the Colombo Plan programme, benefitted from Australia tertiary education, and many of them had become leaders of Sarawak.
'The guestimate is that over 40,000 Sarawakians were educated in Australia – not counting those who studied in the two Australian university campuses in Sarawak.'
Chan said many people were not aware that the Colombo Plan did not stop at education, as it also extended to infrastructures and services.
'An Australian engineering firm designed and built the Satok Bridge under the Colombo Plan.
'I think we should capitalise, monetise and build on this long-standing relationship.
'There are opportunities aplenty in many fields including green energy, digital technologies, tourism, education, health, trade and sports,' he added. Australia Northern Territory Kuching Robyn Cahill

Labuan express ferry back in service after three years, gets maximum capacity each trip to Kota Kinabalu

LABUAN, June 29 — The Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service has seen a surge in passengers since resuming operations on May 27, following a three-year suspension. To date, more than 3,700 commuters have used the direct sea route, with each trip operating at full capacity of over 100 passengers. The revival of the service, linking the duty-free island to Sabah's capital, has been hailed by federal authorities as a much-needed boost to regional connectivity. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa described the ferry's return as a key development for Labuan's socio-economic growth. 'This express ferry is not just a transportation service – it is a vital connector for regional economic, social and development networks,' she said. Speaking to reporters at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal after welcoming passengers from Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zaliha said the service facilitates community mobility, daily activities, and the transport of goods within local supply chains. She expressed satisfaction with the strong public reception, noting that the ferry is popular among a wide range of travellers commuting between the two cities. 'This route offers a more convenient and time-saving alternative to the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry via Menumbok, especially for passengers without vehicles,' she said. While the Ro-Ro ferry is generally preferred for travel to nearby districts such as Menumbok, Kuala Penyu, or Beaufort, the express ferry provides a direct, faster option to Kota Kinabalu. Dr Zaliha also expressed hope that the operator would continue to enhance the service, including shortening travel time, to meet the growing demand. — Bernama

Kedah engineer loses RM275,000 to ‘6 Investment Securuties Internasional' group in ‘Moomoo' Chinese currency investment scam

ALOR SETAR, June 29 — A 57-year-old engineer lost RM275,000 after falling for an online investment scam known as 'Moomoo', which was advertised on Facebook in April. Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Loi Yew Lik said the victim responded to an investment offer involving Chinese currency on April 20 by clicking a WhatsApp link, which led him to a group called '6 Investment Securuties Internasional'. He later communicated with several individuals using the numbers 019-2007253 and 019-2345678. 'The scammers promised a 10 per cent return within days, prompting the victim to transfer RM275,000 in eight transactions between May 27 and June 13 to two company accounts under the names Cisi Infra Solution and Cisi CPT Infra Trading,' he said in a statement today. When no profits were received, the victim grew suspicious as the scammers continued requesting more money, claiming it was needed to release his returns and initial capital. He eventually lodged a police report at the Baling District Police Headquarters yesterday after realising he had been cheated. Loi advised the public to verify any investment offers with the police or nearby stations and to use tools such as the Mule Check app, the CCID Facebook page, or contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997. — Bernama

Klang city council rejects proposal for columbarium project

Klang mayor Abd Hamid Hussain said the applicants may file an appeal to the Selangor town and country planning department within 30 days. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has rejected a proposal to build a four-storey columbarium near a mosque at Kampung Raja Uda. Klang mayor Abd Hamid Hussain said this was decided at a one-stop centre committee meeting on Thursday after taking into consideration technical issues and objections from residents. 'The applicants may file an appeal to the Selangor town and country planning department within 30 days. 'If they are not satisfied with the decision of the appeals board, they may bring the matter to court,' Utusan Malaysia reported him as saying today. On June 6, it was reported that residents at Kampung Raja Uda were considering submitting a memorandum to the sultan of Selangor to protest against the proposal. Village committee chairman Azhar Ibrahim said most of the 5,000 residents in the village opposed the proposed construction of the columbarium on a 1ha plot of private land. He said they were worried the area may become polluted by ashes generated from cremation, particularly among homes situated less than 10m from the proposed site. On June 19, Port Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri expressed his confidence that MBDK would reject the proposal, as the developer had failed to present or justify the suitability of the project in a Malay-majority area. Azmizam said that under the current laws, only 28 types of limited commercial activities were allowed in the area, none of which included the construction of a memorial or columbarium. He said the proposal was clearly unsuitable as the land zoning under the MBDK local plan up to 2035 specified that the proposed project site was meant to be 'a limited commercial area'. Masjid Kampung Raja Uda imam Bazaireen Baharuddin had also expressed his concern over the proposal, which he said would see many religious ceremonies held there.
