‘Oman: Jewel of Arabia' journey showcases tourism

Participants in the exploratory journey 'Oman: Jewel of Arabia' have confirmed that this initiative provides a unique opportunity to showcase Oman's tourism. The journey began at Al Suwaih Beach in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali in the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, passing through the Al Sharqiyah North and Al Wusta Governorates, and continues for 30 days, concluding in Dhofar Governorate.
The journey features Omani youth and British enthusiasts, employing traditional methods of transportation such as camels and walking, alongside modern means such as four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The initiative aims to strengthen the historical ties between Oman and the United Kingdom, highlight Oman's cultural and natural heritage, raise global awareness of environmental sustainability issues, and underscore Oman's status as a tourist destination blending cultural and natural heritage. It also seeks to develop youth skills in exploration and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
Mark Evans, the team leader, stated that the journey 'Oman: Jewel of Arabia' aims to spotlight Oman's rich biodiversity and innovations in sustainability. The journey also celebrates the talented Omani youth working in sustainability fields, such as the transition to green hydrogen. Participants will explore natural reserves, encounter wildlife and learn about the finest types of Omani frankincense unique to Dhofar.
The journey involves six participants, including Thekra al Mawali, the first certified Omani explorer by National Geographic and a trainer at the National Training Centre (Outward Bound Oman); Nigel Haring, an expert in expedition risk management and helicopter rescue; Anna Maria from Switzerland, an internationally recognised professional photographer; Ibrahim al Hasani, a trainer at the National Training Centre (Outward Bound Oman); and Alby from the Bader Foundation.
From his perspective, Ibrahim bin Mohammed al Hasani, a youth skills development trainer at Outward Bound Oman and one of the journey's participants, remarked: 'Undoubtedly, the journey is challenging, with numerous obstacles such as rugged terrain, mountainous landscapes and sea navigation. However, it serves as a platform to discover Oman's position as a tourist destination that combines cultural and natural heritage, supports environmental sustainability efforts, and develops young people's skills in exploration and heritage preservation.'
Al Hasani confirmed that the journey has enhanced his awareness of environmental sustainability issues, expanded his social network, and introduced him to new places and people. Moreover, it offers participants opportunities for self-discovery and for exploring the diverse cultures and traditions across Omani villages, enriching their overall experience.

Uzbek President receives Omani Minister in Tashkent

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 5th session of the Omani-Uzbek Joint Committee for Trade and Economic Cooperation, in conjunction with high-level roundtable discussions and the 4th Tashkent International Investment Forum. The visit aims to expand cooperation and identify joint investment opportunities across key sectors. The meeting was attended by H E Assayida Wafa Jabr al Busaidi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Republic of Uzbekistan, along with senior officials from both countries.

Oman Balloons to make Oman a regional Balloon Tourism hub
Balloon tourism takes off in Oman as the sultanate diversifies its travel offerings to soon become the region's latest ballooning destination with Oman Balloons In a bold step towards placing Oman on the global hot air balloon tourism map, Oman Balloons has successfully completed a trial flight in Cappadocia, Turkey, ahead of its plans to launch commercial balloon rides in North Sharqiyah later this year. The first flights, operated by balloon A4O-OHS, will take off from Bidiyah, offering breathtaking views of the desert and surrounding terrain. 'This marks the beginning of Oman's journey to becoming a major hot air balloon destination in the region,' said Salim Sultan al Abri, founder and CEO of Oman Balloons, in an exclusive interview with Muscat Daily. 'We established the company in 2023 and signed an agreement with Turkish manufacturer Pasha Balloons to become their exclusive agent in the Gulf.' Oman Balloons completed its maiden flight over Cappadocia's famed landscape on June 3. The company plans to officially launch the service in Oman in October, operating from Stars Gate Camp in the Al Wasit area of Wilayat Bidiyah. According to Abri, the balloon has been certified by the Civil Aviation Authority and is equipped to handle Oman's unique weather conditions. It can accommodate up to 20 passengers, will be piloted by a certified balloonist, and accompanied by an onboard assistant. Abri emphasised that the sultanate's diverse terrain – including golden sand dunes, majestic mountains, ancient forts, and lush valleys makes it an ideal destination for balloon tourism. 'Floating silently over Oman's natural and historical landmarks at sunrise offers a serene and unforgettable experience,' he said. The project, launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, is part of broader efforts to diversify Oman's tourism offerings and enhance the country's appeal on the regional and global travel map. Beyond tourism, the initiative is expected to deliver both economic and social benefits. 'Each balloon creates 12 direct jobs, not to mention the indirect opportunities in hospitality, transport, and support services,' Abri disclosed. 'As we expand our fleet, we also plan to introduce new technologies and inspire Omani youth to explore this modern and exciting industry.' Abri highlighted that hot air ballooning is widely considered one of the safest forms of aviation. 'It offers a unique and tranquil way to experience the world from above. Balloons operate in a controlled environment, typically avoiding high-speed manoeuvres and complex navigation. Flights are conducted in calm, clear weather with light winds, both at ground level and aloft. Pilots monitor weather forecasts closely before, during, and after flights to ensure a safe and smooth experience,' he explained. 'As with all aviation activities, safety is paramount,' Abri stressed. 'We've worked closely with certified professionals and regulatory authorities to ensure our ballooning operations in Oman meet the highest safety standards.' The company has ambitious plans, including establishing a hot air balloon maintenance facility in Oman to serve the wider Gulf region and, eventually, setting up a local factory to manufacture balloons with Omani expertise. 'The road was not easy,' says Abri. 'But through persistence, vision, and lessons learned from our visits to the United States and Turkey, we have developed a product tailored to Oman's environment.' Expressing gratitude to the Civil Aviation Authority for supporting the training of personnel and raising awareness about ballooning regulations, and to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for sponsoring the launch event in Turkey, Abri held out a message for young Omanis – 'Believe in your ideas and study your projects carefully. Believing in your own capabilities is the first step to success.'

Muscat Municipality launches global design contest
Muscat – Muscat Municipality has launched the Muscat Municipality Design Competition 2025, during a site visit by Ahmed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality. The visit marked the formal start of the international architecture competition, which is now open to leading studios from around the world. The selected site, located next to the Mall of Oman, covers more than 8,000sqm and has been designated for a multi-functional civic building. The project aims to reflect Muscat's evolving urban identity, balancing modernity with the city's architectural heritage. Situated between the Oman Sea and the Hajar Mountains, the location is intended to serve as a symbolic and functional space within the capital. 'Muscat is expecting a growing number of tourists in the near future, and the city is doing everything to welcome them in a sustainable way and to the highest standards of quality and beauty,' said Humaidi. 'This competition represents a commitment to shaping how Muscat is experienced, through architecture that enhances our urban landscape, honours our heritage and reflects the values we hold as a society. We aim to create spaces that foster civic pride, set new benchmarks in sustainability and contribute meaningfully to Muscat's future as a global destination.' The international competition calls on architecture studios to design a sustainable civic structure rooted in Omani identity. Five shortlisted studios will soon be selected to present their concepts to a jury composed of local and international experts. Final jury presentations are scheduled for early July, after which three finalists will be chosen. The winning design will be announced following the final deliberations. The Muscat Municipality Design Competition 2025 is intended not only as a platform for architectural excellence but also as a public initiative to promote transparency and long-term urban planning. It reflects Muscat's ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability, accessibility and cultural authenticity.
