Solar and wind energy can potentially meet up to 30% of Southeast Asia's data centre electricity requirements in 2030, without the need for battery storage, as detailed in a report by energy think tank Ember.
This development is crucial as the region seeks to balance its digital expansion with sustainable energy practices.
The report identifies Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam as emerging global data centre hotspots, with 2.9GW of new capacity in development.
Ember's analysis indicates that the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) industry's growth in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is driving up electricity demand, with concerns about increasing emissions, as many power grids still depend on fossil fuels.
The slow decarbonisation of the power sector poses a threat to progress. Malaysia's data centre electricity use is expected to surge from 9TWh last year to 68TWh in 2030, potentially accounting for 30% of the country's power consumption and surpassing Singapore's total electricity use in 2023.
Emissions from Malaysia's data centres could increase sevenfold, reaching 40 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) by 2030, the highest in the region. Emissions in the Philippines could surge by 14-fold, with Indonesia's emissions potentially quadrupling.
Despite these challenges, the report suggests that greening data centres is achievable. With supportive policies, market access, and infrastructure planning, ASEAN can foster data centre growth without escalating emissions.
The report said power purchase agreements (PPAs) are a common method for large technology companies to secure clean electricity.
However, smaller operators require more accessible options such as virtual PPAs and green tariffs, which can also support storage solutions to manage the variability of renewable energy sources.
Energy efficiency is another critical factor. By incorporating efficiency measures from the design phase and establishing national guidelines, data centres can reduce electricity usage, alleviating stress on the power grid.
Ember Asia energy analyst Shabrina Nadhila said: 'Governments and industry should work together to align data centre expansion with the energy transition. National frameworks, stronger collaboration and better transparency are critical to ensuring that ASEAN's digital growth also drives progress.'
Earlier this month, Malaysia and Japan put forward a proposal to create a new collaboration hub in Malaysia that would focus on technology, sustainability, and energy integration in ASEAN.

In fact, I advocate for the term 'soft skills' to be changed to 'professional skills.' 'Soft skills' sounds like they're not important, but 'professional skills'? Highly valuable, and every professional needs them. The more of them you have, the more professional you are. It doesn't matter what industry or role you work in. It doesn't matter how elevated or humble your job title. People with a competent array of professional skills are in high demand and always valued. Executive function, or those cognitive skills that allow us to organize our lives by managing tasks, planning ahead and problem solving, is key to staying on top of everything we have to accomplish. Organized individuals possess good executive function and are able to adapt to and prioritize the need of the moment. I frame interpersonal skills as the ability to create and sustain human connection. To connect with someone is to make them feel seen, heard and valued. No matter how brief or sustained their interaction with you, you make others feel that their thoughts and feelings matter to you—opening up motivation, engagement and a positive attitude about whatever you need to accomplish together. Though critical thinking is a vital component to good problem solving, I find that it's more about the attitude people bring to problems than their actual abilities to solve them. We should all strive to meet problems head-on and work proactively on a solution before leaning too heavily on those around us to solve it. I'm thrilled that this skill made the top 10 because it's one I prize in every member of my own team, and I don't think it gets enough attention. Attention to detail is what sets the great apart from the good. People who are motivated to pursue perfection in the small things are the ones who produce the best work. Details matter and can make all the difference in the final result. That said, I'm not advocating for perfectionism—but I will advocate all day for caring enough about the outcome to get the details right. People who care at that level about the work they produce are in high demand. The challenge of professional skills is that we never fully arrive. There's always room to grow. This should both encourage us and spur us to continue our journey of developing these vital abilities. At the outset of my career, I had to be very intentional in order to develop my professional skills. I listened to recordings of leaders in my field. I paid attention to the habits of the people I worked with every day who displayed strong professional skills. I took honest stock of my own abilities frequently to assess where I was improving and what still needed work. In short, I made it a conscious goal to become great at what I did—and I knew that strong professional skills were key to my success. A Florida construction firm shorted employees $594,000 in pay, Labor says
A nationwide construction company's Florida location shorted workers over half a million dollars in overtime pay, the U.S. Department of Labor announced. Labor said it recovered $594,313 for 419 employees — $1,418 per worker — of Amtex-NMS, also known as Southeast Modular Manufacturing, a Leesburg company in the Sunbelt Modular chain. Wage and Hour Division investigators found that Southeast Modular way of rounding hours worked, 'improperly reduced hours that resulted in unpaid overtime for hours worked over 40 per workweek.' Failure to properly pay overtime violates the Fair Labor Standards Act. Southeast Modular didn't respond to an email or a phone message from the Miami Herald. 'Some employers use a pay method referred to as rounding to produce even and balanced calculations of hours worked,' said Wage and Hour Division District Director Vilma Bell. 'While it can be a useful tool, it is the responsibility of all employers to ensure the use of rounding in their time systems is balanced and does not always round in the employer's favor.'
