Four SA golfers to tee it up at the US Open at Oakmont this week
The last time a South African golfer won the US Open was back in 2004 when Retief Goosen won his second Major trophy.

Picture:Four South Africans will be in the 156-man field when the 125th US Open tees off at Oakmont Country Club outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout, ranked 69 in the world, will lead the South African charge at the year's third Major tournament. The three other locals in the field are Erik van Rooyen (ranked 76), Thriston Lawrence (90) and Jacques Kruyswijk (188).
Zimbabwe's Scott Vincent (396) is also in the field.
The last time a South African won the US Open was back in 2004 when Retief Goosen won at Shinnecock Hills. He also won in 2001 at Southern Hills.
Other South African winners of the US Open are Ernie Els in 1997 and 1994 (at Oakmont, the venue this week), and Gary Player in 1965.
Form of SA players
Bezuidenhout has produced a mixed bag on the PGA Tour this season, with his best result a tied-fourth place at the Phoenix Open in February. He missed the cut at the Masters and tied for 50th at the PGA Championship.
Van Rooyen, too, has had an up-and-down PGA Tour season, with a best finish of second at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in early May. He didn't play at the Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
Lawrence has been cut in nine of his 11 starts during his debut PGA Tour season, including at the Masters and PGA Championship. Kruyswijk and Vincent got into the field at Oakmont through qualifying.
More than half the field this week qualify to play based on their world ranking, a previous tournament victory and their place in various tour standings or special exemption.
The other players have won their spots in the field through qualifying tournaments.
Oakmont has hosted nine previous US Open tournaments.
Scheffler the favourite
The USA's Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion, having won at Pinehurst last year. He beat Rory McIlroy by one stroke after the Northern Irishman gave up a two-shot lead with four holes remaining, following three bogeys. It was DeChambeau's second Major title.
McIlroy, however, goes into this week's tournament having won the Masters in April to complete the career Grand Slam.
The favourite at Oakmont is Scottie Scheffler, the world number one who has won three times since the beginning of May. He's captured the CJ Cup Byron Nelson title, the PGA Championship trophy and the Memorial Tournament title in his last four starts, with a tied-fourth place at the Charles Schwab Challenge also in the mix.

'Brighton coach favoured Trossard'
Former Al Ahly striker Percy Tau has explained his decision to leave Brighton and Hove Albion. The 31-year-old joined The Seagulls in 2018, but due to work permit complications, he was loaned out to Belgian side Union SG for a year. Following that, he had successful loan spells at Club Brugge and Anderlecht before finally making his debut for Brighton in 2021. However, Tau only made six appearances for Brighton before leaving for Al Ahly later that same year. Speaking to Robert Marawa on Radio 94.7 , Tau expressed that he felt his former coach, Graham Potter, did not give him a fair chance. 'We feel like it's a league where you can go and test yourself,' he said. 'And what it also requires is a lot of hard work because there's not much training in the Premier League. The games are more intense, so there's a lot of recovery, which is something that affected me when I was there. 'I'm a guy who prefers training because that's where I prove myself, and then I find that we play on a Saturday, off Sunday, off Monday, then we train on a Tuesday and we're off on a Wednesday, Thursday, then play. Tau mentioned how it was difficult for him to feature as Brighton were fighting relegation at the time. 'It was frustrating and I spoke to the coach many times, telling him that I wanted to play. He will say to me, 'but [Leandro] Trossard is doing well' and I said, 'yes, he is doing well because he is getting so many opportunities' Tau said he asked the former Brighton coach to play him more to impress. 'The following season, I stayed; I did not go to the Olympics. I tried to impress the coach and I did well in the friendlies,' he said. The former Mamelodi Sundowns player featured for Brighton in most of their friendly pre-season matches; however, he was benched when the season started. Potter's decision to play Trossard ahead of Tau forced the 'Lion of Judah' to leave Brighton for Al Ahly. Lorch, Mailula and Mokwana ready to hoist the SA flag at Fifa Club World Cup

South Africa will be well represented in the upcoming event in the US after Mamelodi Sundowns' qualification. However, there'll be other South African representatives from two other African giants, Wydad Casablanca and Esperance, who'll be competing at the event. Thembinkosi Lorch - Wydad Casablanca Lorch has grabbed the lifeline that was offered to him by Wydad with both hands as he's put his best foot forward since he arrived at the club last season. He was not able to help the team finish in the Top 2 on the log and qualify for the Champions League next season as they could only claim a Confederation Cup spot. Nevertheless, he had a memorable season, so much so that he was voted as the club's Player of the Month for March. Having been brought to the club by native coach Rulani Mokwena through a loan deal from Mameodi Sundowns, the duo showed great belief in each other. As such, when Mokwena was sacked towards the end of the season, the future and impressive outing of Lorch at the club remained unclear. But Lorch has taken Mokwena's departure in good faith, continuing to be at his best with his skill-set. And that's why it's been reported that Wydad wants to sign him permanently. Cassius Mailula - Wydad Casablanca When Mailula joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto two seasons ago, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said that move wouldn't benefit his career. And that proved to be the case - Mailula was demoted from the first team and sent to train with the reserve side, which took him backwards. But when Mokwena signed him for Wydad at the start of the season, Mailula rediscovered his mojo, scoring five goals and registering seven assists in 33 games. His ability to bounce back to his old self, scoring goals and putting his skill-set to good use, has made him a fan-favourite among the Wydad supporters. As such, when he lost his mother recently, he received outpouring support from both the fans of the club and football fraternity at large. With his loan spell at Wydad coming to an end after the World Cup, the 24-year-old is highly expected to make his move permanent, especially given his recent exploits. Elias Mokwana - Esperance There are few players that come as speedy as Mokwana in continental football, and that's why he was able to be head and shoulders above most players in Tunisia. He made his mark, taking on markers, en route to winning a domestic treble with Esperance, including the championship after the end of the season. Mokwana had said before his move that he was keen to join childhood club Kaizer Chiefs, but the negotiations fell at the final hurdle. Mokwana cannot afford to sulk and moan around - he must wear his heart on his sleeve as long as he's still contracted to Esperance going forward. Esperance like the other three African representatives - Sundowns, Wydad and Al Ahly - in the US will be underdogs in America, but individual performances will not go unnoticed. Mokwana has to be at his best with every passing game and tournament as that'll aid his chances of being called-up for Bafana for the World Cup qualifiers and Afcon finals.

Image: Backpagepix South African football icon Percy Tau is on the move again, and a number of Betway Premiership clubs could soon battle it out for his signature. The 31-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns forward is currently on the hunt for a new club after his contract with Qatar SC expired at the end of last season. Tau was heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs before the last campaign kicked off, but he ultimately chose to move to the Middle East after his time with the Egyptian giants Al Ahly ended. Naturally, Chiefs have once again been mentioned as a possible destination. Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW on Wednesday night, Tau said he was open to returning to the PSL, adding that he was willing to speak to as many potential suitors as possible. 'It's a team that I played for and I've won trophies. I've got so much love for the team and the fans. 'So, it will have to take a good deal to agree. If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs do, then okay, it's not my fault… But I will listen to anybody. Let's not rule out Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch, or SuperSport United. 'I will not rule out anyone, but then my decision will be based on who gives me a contract. 'Of course, Sundowns still have my love, but then it will be based on who offers me a contract, because at the end of the day I still have to support my family. I'm not going to take just any offer. ' Out of all the clubs mentioned, Chiefs are probably the ones who are more desperate for a player of Tau's ability and experience. At times last season, Nasreddine Nabi's men did well and wore teams down but were unable to completely kill them off, as they lacked experience — especially in the final third. Tau, who has won multiple titles throughout his career, including three CAF Champions League crowns, is a player who could give them the edge they currently lack.
