Soccer-Nearly 1.5 million tickets sold for Club World Cup, FIFA says

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Reuters) -Fans from over 130 countries have purchased nearly 1.5 million tickets for the Club World Cup that kicked off last weekend in its newly expanded format across the United States, FIFA said on Tuesday.
A crowd of more than 60,000 turned up for the opener at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, which featured Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, while some 80,000 were in the Rose Bowl stands as Paris St Germain beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 on Sunday.
Yet some matches have also been sparsely attended, as a 0-0 draw between Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense that kicked off midday on Tuesday played out to a half-empty MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
While Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described the atmosphere at his team's game against Los Angeles FC as "a bit strange", as a little over 22,000 spectators came to watch at the 71,000 capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday.
"This is exactly what the FIFA Club World Cup was created for: a world-class stage where new stories are told, new heroes emerge, and club football fans feel part of something bigger," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
Designed as a glittering curtain-raiser for the 2026 World Cup, FIFA hopes to build enthusiasm for the quadrennial spectacle among often soccer-ambivalent fans in the U.S., which will co-host the tournament next year with Canada and Mexico.
Concerns had been rampant, however, after a lacklustre Copa America in 2024 that played out on sub-par pitches to half-empty stadiums and ended with a fan security fiasco at the final in Miami.

SEATTLE, June 18 — River Plate overcame a spirited Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 on yesterday to make a strong start in Club World Cup Group E. The Argentine side overpowered their Japanese opponents at Lumen Field under the Seattle sun, in an entertaining battle. Under 12,000 fans attended the clash at the 69,000-capacity stadium but those who were there, many travelling from Japan and Argentina, created a vibrant atmosphere at both ends of the stadium. All six South American teams that have played in the expanded Club World Cup thus far have stayed undefeated. Marcelo Gallardo's River started the stronger and took the lead when Colidio powered a header home from former Sevilla defender Marcos Acuna's cross. The Red Diamonds played their way into the match and River goalkeeper Franco Armani was forced into an excellent save from Yusuke Matsuo, although he was offside. New Real Madrid signing Franco Mastantuono almost created a second for River, with the 17-year-old teeing up Nacho Fernandez, but the midfielder's drive flew narrowly off target. The Argentine, who will join Spanish giants Madrid after the tournament, was otherwise quieter than expected. The Red Diamonds, who won the Asian Champions League in 2022 to qualify as the only Japanese team at the tournament, shot themselves in the foot at the start of the second half. Marius Hoibraaten sent a foolish back-header towards goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa, without noticing Sebastian Driussi sneaking in behind. The striker bravely nodded home past the helpless stopper but hurt himself as he fell and had to be replaced. Matsuo pulled the Red Diamonds back into the game from the penalty spot after Acuna's ungainly mistimed barge on Takuro Kaneko, sending Armani the wrong way. Maximiliano Meza put the game to bed for River with a header from Acuna's corner after he was left unmarked. 'Unfortunately we lost today but we're going to learn a lot and take that into the next match,' said Matsuo. Polish Urawa coach Maciej Skorza was unhappy with the defeat. 'The result is disappointing, what can I say?' he mused. 'We've done a lot of work, put in a lot of effort, and the beginning of this game was far from what we expected. 'The second half was better but the ease with which we conceded was too much.' Mbappe doubtful for Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener due to illness
MIAMI, June 18 — Real Madrid could be without striker Kylian Mbappe for their Club World Cup opener against Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after the Frenchman missed training due to illness. New head coach Xabi Alonso will make his debut on the Real bench for the Group H match at Hard Rock Stadium and could be without several regulars. Defender Antonio Rudiger and the versatile Eduardo Camavinga are also likely to miss out against the Saudi team. 'Kylian was feeling a little better this morning, but not enough. It's very hot and it was better that he didn't train. But we will wait until the last moment. Tomorrow morning we will decide,' said Alonso. 'Rudiger made a brutal effort this season and I don't know if he will be called up tomorrow, but he is progressing well and will be the first to return. Guardiola hints at summer exit for Grealish after Club World Cup omission
PHILADELPHIA: Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that Jack Grealish may need to consider leaving the club in the summer to secure more regular playing time, after the England international was omitted from the squad travelling to the United States for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup. The 29-year-old attacking midfielder, signed from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, started just seven Premier League matches during the 2024-25 campaign. Speaking ahead of City's Group G opener against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Guardiola admitted that Grealish's future remains uncertain. "We had a conversation between him and the club and decided it was best for him not to travel to the Club World Cup," Guardiola told reporters in Philadelphia on Tuesday. "Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason he didn't play last season was, of course, my decisions. Now, we've decided he needs to play. The club was honest, and he was honest." Guardiola emphasised Grealish's importance to the squad during City's treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, as well as his influence during his time at Aston Villa. However, he acknowledged that the past two seasons have seen the player struggle for consistency. "He has incredible respect and love for the team," Guardiola said. "We decided it's best for him to stay in Manchester, find a place where he can feel like playing again, and rediscover the form he showed in the year of the treble or during his time at Villa. The fact is, over the last two seasons, he hasn't played enough, and he needs to get back to playing regularly, feeling that excitement of competing every three days." While Guardiola left the door open for Grealish to remain at the Etihad Stadium, he admitted that both the player and the club will use their time apart during the Club World Cup to reflect on his future. "I don't know if his future will be in Manchester," he said. "We'll be away now, and we'll see what happens. For now, he's a Manchester City player, and if he has to come back, he will."
