
MacDonald becomes first Devils player to re-sign
Josh MacDonald has re-signed for Cardiff Devils for the 2025-26 season.The Canadian, 31, becomes the first player to recommit for next season having led Devils in scoring in 2024-25, when he claimed 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 points in 51 league games.MacDonald was voted into the season's First Team EIHL All-Star team as well as being named top forward in the IIHF Continental Cup, which Devils won."Josh is a high-impact player in this league and had an excellent first season in Cardiff," said Devils managing director Todd Kelman."He skates so well and has a rocket of a shot, which makes him an offensive threat every time he is on the ice. We are ecstatic to have him back for another season."MacDonald joined Cardiff in 2024 after spells in Germany with Ravensburg and Krefeld.

Russell aims to take Fife Flyers to new heights
Fife Flyers have named their new coach. He's Canadian Jamie Russell and the instructions from bosses are simple: 'Build a winning team.' The 58-year-old, who has never coached in Britain, has also been told to energise the locker room and take the Kirkcaldy club to new heights. Flyers say the Kamloops-born playcaller has a wealth of coaching experience spread across North American college leagues, the rough-tough East Coast Hockey League and in the Slovak Extraliga. His most recent appointment was in the Alps Hockey League with Rittner Buam who faced off against the Cardiff Devils in the third round group stage of the 2024/25 IIHF Continental Cup. Rittner Buam also won the Italian Supercup Championship last season and Russell said: 'The new ownership group has been outstanding in developing a vision to return the Flyers to a level of pride and excellence. 'Max Birbraer is a legend in the Elite League (EIHL), and his leadership will guide us to new heights.' Russell added: 'We are building a roster that will reflect the values you will find in the community of Kirkcaldy. We will attack games with an unyielding work ethic and passion. 'You will see players that have pride in pulling on the Flyers sweater and we intend to make the Fife Ice Arena one of the most challenging places to play in the league.' The home team will, he declared, be known for its speed, grit and relentless style of hockey. Max Birbraer (correct), the club's general manager (GM), revealed that from the first conversation with Russell he felt they were on the same page, not only about how hockey should be played, but the type of team we would like to build in Fife. The Kazakhastan-born Israel international forward added: 'We both felt that this is a tremendous opportunity of having a blank canvas where we can put our own stamp on. 'The fact that Jamie has successfully undergone a full re-build process several times in his extensive career holds huge value as that's exactly what is happening here in the Kingdom of Fife. 'As an associate GM, coach Russell has the creative power of putting together a team which reflects the identity of what truly is a hockey town, hard work, passion, fearlessness, they are just some of the building blocks of our new identity. 'We are planning to balance this with skill and entertainment which we think is a winning formula in terms of giving our diehard supporters the match night experience they deserve. Aston Martin make decision on replacing Lance Stroll at Canadian Grand Prix
Lance Stroll has confirmed that he plans to race at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver missed the last race in Barcelona for surgery on his hand and wrist which placed his participation in this weekend's Montreal race in doubt. Aston Martin said their 'plan A' was for Stroll to race but acknowledged they may have needed a 'plan B'. That would have seen one of their reserve drivers, either Felipe Drugovich or Stoffel Vandoorne, pulled away from the 24 Hours of Le Mans to fill in for the Canadian. But the team has now confirmed that Stroll is set to take part in his home race. An Aston Martin spokesperson said the 26-year-old had travelled to France this week for some testing laps at the Circuit Paul Ricard to check that his body could handle the stress of driving an F1 car. They said: "We are pleased to confirm that Lance Stroll will be back with the team competing in Montreal this weekend. He had a successful medical procedure to resolve the symptoms he has been experiencing and completed some laps in an old F1 car at Paul Ricard earlier this week. Lance is feeling fit and healthy, and is excited to compete in front of his home crowd." And Stroll added: "I am excited to get back behind the wheel with the team for my home Grand Prix this weekend. I was always going to fight hard to be ready to race in front of the Montreal crowd. I'm feeling good after my procedure and put some laps in at Paul Ricard this week to prepare. Thanks for all the support, see you guys this weekend!" ---

Aston Martin reserve gives Lance Stroll injury update amid Canadian GP decision
Lance Stroll is in a race against time to be fit to race for Aston Martin at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend after surgery on his hand and wrist which saw him withdraw from the Barcelona F1 race Lance Stroll "will do everything he can" to race at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. That was the update provided by Aston Martin reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who is one of those who could replace the Montreal native if he is not fit to take part in his home Formula 1 race. Stroll withdrew from the Spanish Grand Prix on June 1, the team confirming he had been suffering with pain in his hand and wrist for around six weeks. It was linked to the damage he did in a pre-season cycling accident in pre-season training two years ago, which required surgery. It was also announced that he would undergo another procedure to help relieve that pain in the long-term. That operation took place after the Barcelona event that he missed, pitting him in a race against time to be fit for the upcoming Canadian GP. Aston Martin have yet to communicate any decision over who will drive alongside Fernando Alonso this weekend. Presumably, they will wait for as long as they can before making a final decision. Both their reserve drivers, Vandoorne and Felipe Drugovich, are scheduled to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend. But their respective teams each have a reserve standing by and Aston Martin have the power to pull either of them away to compete in Montreal if required. Drugovich is set to drive for Cadillac at the world-famous endurance event but Earl Bamber is on standby to take over if the Brazilian gets the nod to make his F1 debut. And Peugeot have Theo Pourchaire hanging around in case Vandoorne is told to hop on a flight to Canada. He said: "I think Lance is in good shape and has good doctors working with him. He will do everything he can to be at the race in Canada." Realistically, Aston Martin have until Friday night at the latest to make a decision. That's because, to be eligible to take part in qualifying for an F1 race, a driver has to have at least taken part in one of the three practice sessions held beforehand. The Montreal event is not a Sprint race and so FP3 is scheduled for Saturday as usual. A reserve driver would need to jet from France to Canada and be refreshed enough to drive in that practice session if he is to race on Sunday. The other option available to Aston Martin could be Valtteri Bottas, who will be in Montreal anyway in his role as reserve driver for Mercedes and their engine customer teams. It is understood, though, that the team would prefer to field one of its own reserves if possible.
