Pinpoint Weather: Rain returns for the end of the week

Yahoo10-04-2025

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR)—A storm system will bring scattered showers to Southwest and Central Virginia for the end of the week. Isolated thunderstorms are possible.
Thursday will be cloudy and cool with afternoon highs in the 50s and lower 60s. Spotty light rain showers are possible in the morning, but there's a greater chance of rain during the afternoon and evening. You may hear some rumbles of thunder, but the severe risk is very low. There will be a lull in the rain activity overnight Thursday into early Friday morning.
More rain will move through Southwest and Central Virginia on Friday. Scattered showers are likely with isolated storms possible. Highs will be in the 50s. Between Thursday and Friday, rainfall totals will range from 0.5-1.5″.
A few rain showers may switch to snow showers Friday night in areas west of the Blue Ridge. West-slope snow showers may persist into Saturday. Overall, little to no accumulation is anticipated.
For Saturday, spotty light rain showers cannot be ruled out. Otherwise, the day will be cooler and blustery. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible. The northwest winds will keep the region cooler. Afternoon temperatures will reach the 40s and 50s under mostly cloudy skies.
Drier weather is anticipated across the region on Sunday. Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected with breezy winds blowing through. It will be slightly warmer with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper 50s and 60s.
Noticeably warmer conditions are slated for Monday. A southwest breeze will carry warmer air into Southwest and Central Virginia. Afternoon highs will be in the 70s under a mix of sun and clouds. The warm-up will be brief; a cold front on Tuesday will allow cooler conditions to return by the middle of next week.

CWG Live updates: Sunshine and smoke today; highs near 90 on the way

Welcome to updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather Gang meteorologists. Happening now: Sunny skies today are filtered by smoky haze. Morning 60s and 70s top out in the mid-80s this afternoon. What's next? We've got a shot to reach 90 degrees for the first time this year on Thursday and Friday. An isolated storm chance returns late Friday, then scattered showers and storms possible this weekend. Today's daily digit — 8/10: Plenty of sun, mid-80s, and not too humid would be close to ideal, were it not for the smoky haze. | 🤚 Your call? The digit is a somewhat subjective rating of the day's weather, on a 0-to-10 scale. Forecast in detail Today (Wednesday): High pressure provides sunny skies, except they're filtered by wildfire smoke. Morning temperatures rise through the 60s and 70s, topping out in the mid-80s this afternoon with light winds. That's pretty warm, but at least it's not too humid. Confidence: Medium-High Tonight: Skies continue most clear of clouds, but still with the smoke-induced haze. Overnight lows dip to the mid- to upper 60s. Confidence: Medium-High Tomorrow (Thursday): Mostly sunny skies keep the warming trend going. Will it be our first 90-degree day of the year? We've got a shot, with highs probably in the upper 80s to low 90s, and more noticeable humidity. There still could be some smoke in the sky, but it should be less dense than today. Confidence: Medium-High Tomorrow night: Mostly to partly cloudy with lows in the upper 60s to low 70s as the humidity continues to rise. Confidence: Medium-High A look ahead High pressure breaks down by Friday. That allows enough moisture to build in the atmosphere for the chance of a few isolated showers or thunderstorms during the late afternoon or evening. Before, then, skies are partly sunny with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s again and moderate to high humidity. Confidence: Medium Still a tricky weekend forecast due to the uncertain position of a nearby front. A period of scattered showers and thunderstorms is possible both days, but it's too soon to talk about timing. Rather humid both days as highs aim for the 80s on Saturday, and then somewhere in the mid-70s to mid-80s on Sunday. Hotter and drier weather will be moving into New Mexico

Storms will again be clearing out of New Mexico later tonight. Drier and hotter weather will move in each day into the weekend. Storms first developed late this morning over the Sacramento Mountains where they brought minor to moderate burn scar flooding in the Ruidoso area. Storms have cleared away from the Sacramento Mountains, but then brought severe weather to southeast New Mexico this afternoon. Isolated to scattered storms have also developed in central and northern New Mexico. Finally, storms developed in Albuquerque tonight where they brought measurable rainfall. Storms are ending tonight across the state. A pattern of hotter and drier weather will start Wednesday. Isolated showers and storms will still pop up over the mountains and surrounding areas Wednesday afternoon, but the rain totals will be much lighter. Temperatures will be hotter Wednesday afternoon as well. Even drier air will move into the state from the west Thursday. This will keep the chance for rain along and east of the central mountain chain. This chance will be very spotty though. That's where the chance for rain will stay into this weekend. Temperatures continue to heat up into this weekend as well. The hottest day will be Sunday and Monday next week. Parts of the Albuquerque Metro may hit 100° for the first time this year, with a stretch of triple-digit heat in southern New Mexico. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
