Karnataka Health Department issues order to recall doctors and staff on deputation in other departments
Faced with an acute shortage of staff, the Health Department has directed all doctors and staff deputed to other departments for more than five years to report back with immediate effect.
According to an order issued in this regard on Wednesday, all staff including specialist doctors working on deputation in other departments, including district hospitals and medical college hospitals run by the Medical Education Department for more than five years, should report back immediately, failing which action will be initiated as per rules. The order has been issued following mature deliberations at the highest level, sources said.
Harsh Gupta, Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), told The Hindu that there are 565 doctors, including specialists, and a large number of other staff including nurses and technicians working on deputation in other departments.
More than 10-15 years
'We have noted that most of these are working in one place, mainly in urban areas, for more than 10 to 15 years. We now are working on sub-optimal utilisation of the existing resources. These doctors were deputed when the teaching hospitals were set up and can now be called back as there is a shortage of staff in the parent department. Many senior doctors are working as casualty medical officers where fresh MBBS graduates can be posted,' he said.
Mr. Gupta said many are ready to work in positions below their experience just to continue staying in the urban hospitals. 'If at all there is a need, we can redistribute the existing resources equitably to ensure that others also get a chance to work in urban areas,' he said.
Critical vacancies
Pointing out that there is a need for specialists in facilities run by the Health Department, the Principal Secretary said: 'As per rules if the vacancy position is more than 50% for a particular speciality, such critical vacancies should be filled on priority. Our intention is to optimally utilise the existing resources ensuring equitable distribution of specialists.'

Gujarat Reports Over 200 New Covid Cases In 24 Hours
Ahmedabad: As Covid-19 cases continue to rise across India, the number of active infections has now crossed 6,815 nationwide. In Gujarat, the situation remains under close observation as the state recorded 203 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours till Wednesday. This brings the total number of active cases in Gujarat to 1,281. Of these, 23 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, while the remaining 1,258 are being managed through outpatient-based care (OPD). As many as 149 patients recovered and were discharged during the same period. The state Health Department has noted a slight decline in daily new Covid-19 cases over the past three days, which officials consider an encouraging sign amid the broader national increase. The trend in Gujarat over the past 10 days shows fluctuating but gradually declining number of daily Covid-19 cases. On June 10, 223 new cases were reported, a slight decrease from 235 cases on June 9. The daily case count dropped further on June 8 with 185 cases, followed by 183 on June 7 and 170 on June 6. Earlier this month, on June 1, the state had reported only 55 Covid-19 cases. The active Covid caseload rose steadily through the first week of June, from 320 on June 1 to 1,281 as of June 11, indicating the virus is still circulating actively in the community. With the annual Rath Yatra approaching, state health authorities have issued advisories urging vulnerable population -- including senior citizens and people with pre-existing conditions -- to avoid crowded areas and watch the event from home. State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has appealed to the people to take sensible precautions as a preventive measure. The Gujarat government is actively preparing for the rising Covid-19 cases by closely monitoring trends, ensuring hospital readiness, and coordinating with health departments across districts. With more than 1,200 active Covid-19 cases in the state, officials have emphasised outpatient-based care to manage the majority of infections, as only a small fraction require hospitalisation. Regular updates are being issued, and health advisories have been circulated, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised patients. Additionally, the state Health department has urged citizens to remain cautious and adhere to preventive measures while also ramping up testing and recovery monitoring across urban and rural areas.

"Stay alert and take all precautions": UP Deputy CM Pathak on heatwave conditions
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 11 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Wednesday urged citizens to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions amid the ongoing severe heatwave conditions sweeping the state. Addressing the escalating temperatures, Pathak highlighted the measures taken by the Health Department to manage the crisis. He noted that hospitals in the state are on high alert, with beds reserved for heat-related emergencies. He also urged citizens to only step out of the house unnecessarily during such severe heatwaves. 'In view of the extreme heat conditions, the Health Department has made necessary arrangements. All hospitals have been put on alert, with beds reserved for heat-related emergencies, and continuous monitoring is underway. Citizens are advised not to step out unless necessary. If stepping out, they should protect their heads with an umbrella or towel, as the sunlight is currently very intense. Please stay alert and take all precautions,' he said. The heatwave has particularly affected many regions of the state, with heatwaves reported in a few places over South Uttar Pradesh, with gradual respite from the heatwave over Northwest India likely from 14th June as per the India Meteorological Department. Ayodhya District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde also outlined proactive steps to mitigate its impact. 'We had prepared an action plan considering the heatwave in Ayodhya and according to this, a strategy was made for the steps to be taken by various departments. We are ensuring that the residents and tourists face no inconvenience and get enough cold water to drink. We have arranged shades and water for domestic as well as street animals. We appeal to all the tourists to stay in the shade while visiting the temple (Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple). If you need any medical help, we have reserved special beds for those affected by the heatwave. Consistently drink cold water,' Funde stated, emphasising the administration's efforts to support both locals and pilgrims. KGMU doctor, MBBS student among 8 test positive for Covid
Lucknow: A resident doctor and an MBBS student at KGMU were among 8 who tested positive for Covid-19 in city on Wednesday taking the tally to 22 so far. The new cases bring Lucknow's active caseload to 17, with a total of 22 individuals contracting the virus in the recent past, five of whom have recovered. The senior resident doctor from the gynaecology oncology department, whose report came positive on Tuesday, experienced symptoms like fever, cold, cough, and body ache since last Friday. Following the diagnosis, the doctor reportedly returned to home district in Lakhimpur Kheri. An MBBS third-year student also tested positive. KGMU spokesperson Dr Sudhir Singh said both patients exhibit mild symptoms and their condition is stable. They have been isolated and prescribed necessary precautions and medication. The MBBS student, residing in the hostel, has been isolated within the premises. Also, a 61-year-old resident of Mayur Vihar Colony in Indiranagar tested positive. The elderly patient, who has no travel history, suffers from a severe heart condition with 50% coronary artery blockage. While currently in home isolation, doctors recommended hospitalisation due to underlying health issues. A health department official said: "All the patients found positive are currently in home isolation and stable."
