‘Family is more important than my career': Jasprit Bumrah opens up about fitness, his body and workload management

India ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah opened up about his much-discussed workload management, family and much more in a recent conversation with former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke. Speaking on Clarke's podcast named Beyond 23, Bumrah said his family is more important than his career.
'For me, family is more important than my career because you know that is constant. There are two things that I take seriously. One is my family, and one is my game, but family comes first,' said Bumrah.
'I have to give priority, and I do give priority because I will not be a cricketer all the time. For them, I'm not a cricketer. I'm a human being, and you know, being a young father, seeing my son, you know, he started picking up the ball and started playing with the ball, which is not advisable at this moment,' he added.
With Shubman Gill taking over the captaincy reins from Rohit Sharma after his retirement, Team India is looking at a new era starting from the England tour. Bumrah was in reckoning for the Test leadership, but since he is unlikely to feature in all five Tests, looking at his workload management, the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, decided to go with Gill instead.
Speaking on his fitness and his body, Bumrah said: 'Obviously, it is tough for any individual to keep playing everything for so long. I've been doing it for a while, but eventually you have to understand where your body is going, what is the important tournament.
'You have to be a little selective and smart about how you use your body. As a cricketer, I would never want to leave anything and always keep on going. But I don't set goals or look at numbers. whenever I have (set goals), I've never been able to fulfil them,' he added.
'I just try and enjoy because that's why I started this sport. Take one day at a time and collect memories because, at the end of the sport, that's all I'll remember,' added Bumrah.

Rahul Tewatia yells behind Jasprit Bumrah, MI pacer snaps with 'don't say this to me' in tense verbal exchange

The Mullanpur crowd witnessed a high-octane Eliminator clash in IPL 2025 on Friday as Mumbai Indians held their nerve in the death overs to edge past Gujarat Titans by 20 runs and march into Qualifier 2. But amid the crunch moments of the match, a fleeting verbal exchange between Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Tewatia added drama to the already tensed contest. The incident took place in the 18th over of the GT innings. Tewatia, who had earlier launched Bumrah for a six, looked eager to seize the moment again. However, after failing to connect with the next ball, Tewatia uttered a few words in frustration that seemed to catch Bumrah's ear. "Don't say this to me," Bumrah shot back, turning around with a glare, visibly displeased. But the tension dissolved almost as quickly as it had escalated. Tewatia clarified that his words were self-directed. 'Tujhe nahi keh raha tha, khud ko bol raha tha (I wasn't saying it to you, I was saying it to myself),' he said, prompting a smile from Bumrah, who raised a hand in acknowledgement and walked back to his mark. With 45 needed off the last three overs, GT banked on Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan. Bumrah returned for the 18th and conceded just nine runs despite the six from Tewatia, leaving GT with a daunting 36 to get off the final 12 balls. Boult removed Rutherford early in the 19th, but Shahrukh smashed a six off the final ball, dragging GT within 24 of the target for the last over. But the ask proved too steep as MI sealed the game, dashing GT's hopes of a second IPL crown. MI will now face Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad on June 1 for a place in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

McLaren's Piastri Outdoes Norris To Take Pole In Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying

In yet another battle of the McLaren brothers, Oscar Piastri outpaced his title rival and team-mate Lando Norris in the final minute of a gripping qualifying session on Saturday to secure pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix. The championship leader clocked a near-flawless final lap of one minute and 11.546 seconds, beating Norris by 0.209 seconds as McLaren claimed a dominant one-two, having topped all three practice sessions. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, followed by Mercedes' George Russell, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. Charles Leclerc took seventh in the second Ferrari, followed by Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Racing Bulls' impressive rookie Isack Hadjar, and local hero, two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. It was Piastri's fourth pole of the season and career as he aims to extend his three-point lead over Norris in the drivers' championship. 'Nice work, very nicely done, everyone," said the composed 24-year-old Australian on team radio. 'That's quite some turnaround from last year. Well done everyone. Let's have some fun tomorrow!" He added, 'I'm very glad to be on pole here and now I just need a good start. It's a long run to the first corner!" Norris commented, 'Oscar has driven really well and he deserved it. But it is a great result for the team." Piastri's two-second advantage is the biggest this season between pole and second place. The session was briefly stalled when Alpine's Franco Colapinto stopped in the pit lane, causing a delay and forcing other drivers to overtake him, leading to a frantic final two minutes. Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull was eliminated in 20th and last place, along with Colapinto, Williams' Carlos Sainz—his worst qualifying result at his home event—in 18th, Esteban Ocon of Haas, and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. For Tsunoda, it was a significant setback as he sought to address Red Bull's challenge in finding a partner to push Verstappen. Cloud cover affected conditions for the second runs as both McLaren drivers fought for pole, with the Australian prevailing. It was McLaren's first front-row lockout in Spain since 1998.

"Don't Say This...": Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Tewatia In War Of Words Amidst Tense IPL 2025 Eliminator

Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs in a tight Eliminator match in IPL 2025. The chase went down to the wire, with GT staying alive right up to the final over. However, amidst a tense match, there appeared to be a small squabble between MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah and GT batter Rahul Tewatia. The incident occurred during the 18th over, when Tewatia appeared to say something after missing out on a delivery. Tewatia's words caught the attention of Bumrah, and the duo had a small run-in. Tewatia had smashed Bumrah for a six earlier in the over, but the pacer made a superb comeback right after, forcing a dot ball and a single. Tewatia's words caused Bumrah to look back and give the batter a glare. "Don't say this to me," Bumrah told Tewatia, upon hearing the batters' words. However, Tewatia clarified that he had said it to himself, and had not aimed his words at Bumrah. "I wasn't saying it to you, I was saying it to myself," Tewatia responded to Bumrah. Following Tewatia's response, Bumrah appeared to smile and show a hand to the batter, bringing an end to the matter. A brilliant half-century by Sai Sudharsan and his partnership with Washington Sundar went in vain as fine death bowling effort from Mumbai Indians (MI) helped the Blue and Gold franchise eliminate the 2022 champions from the competition with a 20-run win at Mullanpur on Friday. With this win, MI will now play Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad on June 1 for a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 3. During the run-chase, GT was off to the worst imaginable start as skipper Shubman Gill was trapped leg-before-wicket by Trent Boult for just one. GT was 3/1 in 0.4 overs. However, later, Sai and Kusal Mendis started to stitch a partnership, taking down Boult with three sixes in the third over and adding some pressure on MI. In the final three overs, GT was left needing 45 runs. Bumrah bowled the next over, and Tewatia tried making a game out of it, dancing sideways and smashing him for a six. GT was left with 36 in the final two overs, with nine runs coming from the over. Boult started the next over with the wicket of Rutherford for 24 in 15 balls, with four boundaries. GT was 193/5 in 18.1 overs. Boult continued delivering fine yorkers, but Shahrukh Khan hit a six on the final ball, leaving GT with 24 to get in the final over.
