PH Consulate in Hong Kong reminds Filipinos to follow local laws on public gatherings
The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong has urged Filipinos to be cautious and observe local laws when joining or organizing public gatherings.
In a recent advisory, the Consulate cited the Hong Kong Public Order Ordinance, which requires organizers to notify the Commissioner of Police in writing no later than 11 a.m. one week before the planned event. A permit is also required for public assemblies.
'The Commissioner of Police has the authority to prohibit public meetings if deemed necessary for national security, public safety, or the protection of others' rights and freedoms,' the Consulate said, adding that conditions or restrictions may also be imposed.
Non-compliance may result in penalties, including imprisonment of up to 12 months and a fine of HK$5,000. More serious offenses—such as failure to notify authorities or engaging in disorderly or violent conduct—may carry penalties of up to five years in prison.
The Consulate advised Filipinos in Hong Kong to stay informed and ensure all public activities comply with the city's legal requirements.

'We have already identified the parties behind this orchestrated and well-funded campaign aimed at shoving the agency into negative limelight once again. We shall expose these parties at the appropriate time and venue.' Viado disclosed that he had received warnings about possible retaliation from vested interests whose underground operations were disrupted by reforms currently being implemented at the BI. He claimed that some of those behind the campaign were former insiders who had been subject to the agency's one-strike policy or had personal grievances over denied requests. According to Viado, a senior BI official who now 'pretends to be a whistleblower,' previously attempted to pressure his office into releasing a Chinese national with alleged political connections to the past administration. He believes his refusal to accommodate that request may have triggered the campaign to discredit him. 'I have disregarded these warnings because the mandate I accepted was never about protecting myself, but about cleaning up a system long plagued by abuse,' Viado stated. 'If the price of reform is to be the target of black propaganda, then so be it.' The commissioner reiterated that the Bureau is prepared to fully cooperate with any investigation that may be initiated by relevant government bodies. 'Should any pertinent agency of the national government decide to look into the supposed 'allegations,' I reiterate the commitment of the Bureau to lend its fullest support,' he said, noting that he had already extended the same assurance to the committee of Senator Imee Marcos. Viado also confirmed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had been informed of the situation, including the identities and motives of the individuals believed to be behind what he described as an 'orchestrated campaign' against his leadership. He warned those responsible that they 'shall be exposed in due time,' insisting that the public deserves the truth. 'It is unfortunate that these interests are using the name of the hardworking men and women of the Bureau to mask themselves and their hideous agenda,' Viado said. 'No amount of smear will stop us from continuing our efforts at reforms in the agency. The truth will stand.'

10 OFWs in Slovenia receive aid after reporting alleged human trafficking
Ten Filipino workers in Slovenia have received financial assistance from the Philippine Embassy in Vienna and its attached Migrant Workers Office (MWO) after being identified as victims of alleged human trafficking. The workers were initially recruited in 2023 to work in hotels and restaurants but were deployed to a different employer under harsh and inhumane conditions, the Embassy said in a news release. In June 2024, they submitted formal complaints to the MWO in Milan with the help of embassy officials. After fleeing their workplaces, they were granted temporary residence in Slovenia. They have since secured new full-time jobs while Slovenian authorities continue to investigate their former employer for possible human trafficking violations. The assistance was made possible through the AKSYON Fund of the Department of Migrant Workers, with MWO Vienna facilitating the aid. The Philippine Embassy encouraged other Filipino workers experiencing contract violations to report their cases to MWO Vienna for proper assistance.

15 foreign nationals, including 11 Filipinos, jailed in Nigeria for cybercrime
A Nigerian court has sentenced 15 foreign nationals—all of Asian origin—to one year in prison and fined them one million naira (approximately $630) each for cyber-terrorism and internet fraud, according to the country's anti-corruption agency. The convicted group includes 11 Filipinos, two Chinese, one Malaysian, and one Indonesian. They pleaded guilty before the court in Lagos and were accused of recruiting young Nigerians to commit identity theft and pose as foreigners online, said Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The court also ordered the forfeiture of devices seized from the offenders to the Nigerian federal government. Nigeria has long battled a reputation for online scams perpetrated by so-called 'Yahoo Boys.' But recent developments point to a growing presence of international cybercrime syndicates taking advantage of the country's weak digital security infrastructure. According to the EFCC, these foreign-led networks enlist Nigerian accomplices to run phishing scams targeting victims—mostly in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe—seeking to steal money or sensitive personal data. In a major operation last December, the EFCC arrested 792 suspects in Lagos's Victoria Island, including 192 foreign nationals—148 of whom were Chinese. Several of these individuals are currently on trial for related offenses.
