Work starts to upgrade Scotstoun for Glasgow 2026

Yahoo6 hours ago

Work to upgrade Scotstoun Stadium in advance of next summer's Commonwealth Games started on Monday, in what has been described as a "significant milestone" in preparations for Glasgow 2026.
The existing athletics track at the ground - which is the home of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team - is being ripped up this week and the temporary stands at either end dismantled.

A new world-class surface will be laid between now and September in what is the first tranche of redevelopment, with the Warriors returning to the stadium before work resumes next spring.
The second Glasgow Games in 12 years will take place from 23 July to 2 August, and will involve 10 sports across four venues. It is expected more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will take part.
No public money will be spent on the work and the track will be gifted to the city after the conclusion of the Games, which will boast the Commonwealth Mile as its signature event.
"There will be an electric atmosphere at Scotstoun, given the calibre and scale of the athletics competition taking place there," Glasgow 2026 chief executive Phil Batty said.

"We can't wait to see Scotstoun come alive and the brilliant sporting moments that will take place in this incredible venue."

Arsenal unconcerned by Real Madrid links to defender

Arsenal are unconcerned over speculation linking Myles Lewis-Skelly with an exit and are optimistic about agreeing a new deal with the defender. Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a breakout campaign for Arsenal in 2024/25, with the teenager making 39 appearances in all competitions after debuting for the senior side in September. Advertisement The 18-year-old was a key part of Arsenal's run to the Champions League semi-finals and thrived in the quarter-final win over holders Real Madrid. Following those displays, the Spanish side have been linked with an ambitious move to sign Lewis-Skelly, whose contract has just 12 months to run. Real Madrid have targeted high-profile free agents in recent windows with Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold among the names to have moved to the Bernabeu. Los Blancos are again scouting the market for potential Bosman deals, amid links to Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate and Lewis-Skelly. However, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Arsenal remain relaxed about the latter's situation. The North Londoners are keen to reward Lewis-Skelly with a new long-term deal, recognising his development at the Emirates. Advertisement He has emerged as Mikel Arteta's first choice at left-back and marked his senior England debut with a goal in March. Lewis-Skelly became the youngest debutant to score for England, beating the previous record held by Marcus Rashford. Arsenal are keen to tie up the defender to a new deal, after sealing an agreement for Gabriel Maghalaes earlier this month. The Brazilian defender ended speculation surrounding his future at the Emirates after signing a new contract. Gabriel is now contracted to the Gunners until 2029. 'Welcome Kerkez': Liverpool fans excited for £45m transfer as Bournemouth confirm new signing

Milos Kerkez has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool (Getty Images) Liverpool fans have been given further cause for excitement over a potential summer deal for Milos Kerkez. Just last week, Justin Kluivert was quizzed about the future of his Bournemouth teammate amid links to the Premier League champions. Advertisement Speaking to VoetbalPrimeur following a huge win for the Netherlands against Malta, the forward was expecting Kerkez's transfer to be completed sooner rather than later. Kluivert said "He'll probably go there. I hope so for him. "He hasn't really said goodbye yet, but I hope he'll make it happen there." It has been widely reported that discussions between Liverpool and Bournemouth for the left-back have taken over a possible deal worth £45m. Interestingly, the Cherries appear to have opened the door for Kerkez to leave having signed a like-for-like replacement in Adrien Truffert from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes. Advertisement A statement reads: 'AFC Bournemouth is delighted to announce the signing of French left-back Adrien Truffert from Rennes. 'The Belgian-born defender joins the Cherries on a five-year deal from the Ligue 1 outfit.' That said, judging by the reaction on social media, this announcement has generated more excitement among the Liverpool fanbase as many are expecting news on Kerkez very soon...

Owen Farrell returns to Saracens after one season in French rugby at Racing 92

LONDON (AP) — Former England captain Owen Farrell is returning to Saracens after spending an underwhelming season in French rugby at Racing 92. Farrell left Saracens at the end of the 2023-24 season following a 16-year stay at the club, with his decision to move to Paris coming amid a break from playing for England in order to prioritize his mental wellbeing. Advertisement Playing outside England then made him ineligible for national-team selection anyway. He has not played test rugby since the 2023 World Cup and was not included in the British & Irish Lions squad — coached by his father, Andy — for the upcoming tour of Australia. After an injury-disrupted campaign with Racing, Farrell said he was coming 'home' and that 'the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously.' The 33-year-old Farrell has signed a two-year deal. 'Owen has Saracens in his DNA," director of rugby Mark McCall said. 'His competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club and we are delighted he has chosen to come home.' ___ AP rugby:
