"This would be like D-Rose going back coaching the Bulls" - KG likes the idea of Mark Jackson getting the Knicks job
"This would be like D-Rose going back coaching the Bulls" - KG likes the idea of Mark Jackson getting the Knicks job originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett isn't surprised that the New York Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. According to Garnett, Thibodeau's style is outdated, and the Knicks should have fired him as early as 2022 because it was clear that he wasn't going to win a chip there.

As for his replacement, KG and his buddy Paul Pierce discussed potential candidates like Patrick Ewing, Sam Cassell, and even their former teammate Rajon Rondo. However, the name that got The Big Ticket animated was former Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson.
"I like that Mark Jackson," said Garnett on the "Ticket and the Truth" podcast. "That Mark Jackson in New York have it cracking. Mark Jackson a real dude. New York need some…Mark Jackson in the Garden, who from New York? Queens? I actually like that better than he in Golden State. "
Jackson delivers a different vibe
Mark is widely considered the architect of the Golden State Warriors dynasty team. He coached the Warriors for three years from 2011-12 to 2013-14. After a 23-43 first season, Jackson led the Dubs to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a 51-win season in 2013-14.

However, just as when they were expected to turn the page, Jackson was fired, not because of his basketball performance but because he could not get along with people in the organization. Steve Kerr replaced him and immediately won the NBA title in 2015, but many consider Mark to be the architect of that team.
The issue with Jackson is that he has not coached in more than a decade, and his three-year NBA coaching resume pales in comparison to the names currently linked to the coaching vacancy. However, KG says that Mark being from Queens gives him a different vibe from the other candidates.
"Nothing better of a story that came from where you from…This would be like D-Rose going back coaching the Bulls. Man, can't nobody exemplify New York basketball better than Mark Jackson or be one up. That's like a bedtime story," added Garnett.

New York is not an attractive coaching destination right now
Like Garnett, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, who is a diehard fan of the Knicks, also made a case for Jackson as the team's next head coach earlier this week. But unlike KG, who said Thibs deserved to be booted out, SAS has been critical of his firing. In his recent take on the Knicks' search for a head coach, Stephen A. said that NY is no longer an alluring coaching destination.

"The New York Knicks are not as attractive of a job as one would argue they were last season. Why? Because you gave up five first-round picks, four unprotected, for Mikal Bridges, who's a damn good player. But he ain't Luka; that ain't Kevin Durant. That ain't LeBron. That ain't Steph Curry. That's not him," explained SAS.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks denied the Knicks' request to interview Jason Kidd, essentially shutting the door on that option. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets also denied New York's bid to interview Chris Finch and Ime Udoka, respectively. These denials should tell New York that they may need to source their next coach elsewhere. It may not be bad to listen to KG and SAS right now.

Stephen A. Smith under fire for playing game on his phone during NBA Finals while Kevin Durant joins the mocking
Stephen A. Smith may not have played his cards right. The polarizing ESPN personality is being criticized for playing the popular card game Solitaire during the Thunder's 111-104 road win over the Pacers in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday, with even rival NBA player Kevin Durant joining in on the mocking. Advertisement Durant posted to his Instagram story the image of Smith playing the game while at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. 'CMON STEVE,' Durant wrote on the bottom of the photo. Smith maintained he only turned to the mobile version of the game during a stoppage in play in a response to a quote tweet from popular NBA aggregator on X @LegionHoops showing him playing cards. 'Yep! That's me. Who would've thought….I can multi-task. Especially during TIMEOUTS!' Smith wrote in a quote tweet of the post. 'Hope y'all are enjoying the NBA Finals. This is going 7 games now, peeps!' Advertisement 5 The photo of Smith playing Solitaire. @LegionHoops/X However, not everyone is buying that response. The community note on Smith's post claims he's fabricating his story and linked to a video showing Smith playing the game during in-game action. Advertisement 'Stephen A. Is lying. This photo was taken during gameplay, NOT during a timeout,' the community note states. The video linked in the post came from user @feellikedrew, who posted a video showing the Thunder going for a basket before cutting to Smith with the game on his phone. The end of the clip showed the Pacers running a play. Advertisement 'Bro talks about knowing ball,' the caption read. 'He's playing solitaire during the NBA finals.' 5 The action happening while Smith was shown playing a card game on his phone. @FeelLikeDrew/X Smith attempted to get the last laugh by posting just after midnight a photo showing a Solitaire hand with an inset image from when the Pacers led, 87-80, with 11:36 remaining in the game. The Thunder outscored the Pacers, 12-1, in the final three minutes to even the series at 2-2. Pacers fans and Durant are upset with the controversial Smith for comments he's made. Smith would not classify Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton as a superstar and then fired at Haliburton after the guard chirped at NBA pundits — he didn't name Smith specifically — after pulling the Game 3 upset. Advertisement 'Oh, by the way, just in case he was talking about me. My brother, I'm not going away,' Smith said on 'First Take' on Thursday. 'I'm going to be here for a while. .. Players far more accomplished and far more superior have made their efforts trying to call me out. How has that worked out?' 5 Kevin Durant posted this shot to his Instagram Story. @easymoneysniper/Instagram 5 Kevin Durant and Smith have feuded plenty. Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Advertisement The feud between Durant and Smith goes back years and the NBA star called him out in April for being too distracted to digest enough basketball after Smith mocked his leadership. 'Steve is trying to run for president, u think he actually paid attention to a struggling team??' Durant said in reference to the Suns. 'It's called propaganda.'

Knicks Could Be Eyeing Timberwolves for More Help
Before the Minnesota Timberwolves tipped-off their 2024-25 regular season, president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, made a blockbuster trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and more. For one season in the Big Apple, it was a bold move that reunited Towns with his former head coach in Minnesota, Tom Thibodeau. Despite the new-look Knicks going on to win 51 regular season games and making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals, Thibs was fired on Tuesday. Advertisement While there are still questions surrounding Towns' fit in New York, the $53 million (2025-26), $57 million (2026-27) and $61 million (2027-28 player option) he's due the next three seasons will make it nearly impossible for the Knicks to move him. Instead, they will likely be forced to find a new head coach that can get them to the next level, with KAT on roster. Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori linked to Knicks head coaching job And wouldn't you know it, the Knicks are eyeing up the Minnesota Timberwolves yet again, in assistant coach, Micah Nori, according to The Athletic insiders — who linked him, along with eleven other candidates, to the New York Knicks' newly vacant head coaching job. Nori has been involved in several coaching searches in recent years while serving as the lead assistant in Minnesota under head coach Chris Finch. He has earned acclaim for his smarts and his mid-game interviews with the Timberwolves, while the franchise has also had two of its most successful seasons during his time there. The Athletic The fit in New York is an understandable one. Nori has a well-developed relationship with Towns and would be given reign to push him. If there is a way to bridge the gap on the roster between those that were there, and Towns going forward, a familiar face could be it. Advertisement At 51 years old Nori isn't a former player fresh off of retirement and stepping onto the sidelines. He's also not the aging retread that has been passed around the league by countless other teams. Nori has been waiting for his opportunity and he'd be a fresh voice in NBA head coaching circles. Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images He began as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors during the 2009-10 season and was there until going to Sacramento in 2013-14. He worked under Tim Connelly in Denver and came to Minnesota before the 2021-22 season. Related: Timberwolves Deja Vu: Tom Thibodeau Relieved of His Coaching Duties in New York It's a pretty big ask for a new head coach to come in and improve upon 51 wins. Then again, it was here that you read about Tom Thibodeau being a fit for the incompetent New York Knicks. So… is Nori going to leave for the New York Knicks? In recent seasons there has been plenty of talk about Nori's possible rise to head coaching prominence. At some point, that much smoke should eventually catch fire. Until then, he will continue to assist Chris Finch, who is easily the most successful head coach the Minnesota Timberwolves have ever had. Advertisement For as great as Finch has been, he has been severely out-coached at times, as well. If the Minnesota Timberwolves were to surprise the basketball world and look to improve on Finchy, maybe Nori would get a look. More likely, he and other rising assistants will look elsewhere for head coaching opportunities. The Minnesota Timberwolves have plenty things they will be juggling this summer on their own. I'd guess Connelly would prefer not to add a coaching hire to the mix, but he may not have a choice. Related Headlines
