New monument unveiled completes Veterans Memorial Plaza at annual Memorial Day ceremony
A new monument was unveiled and completed the plaza at Centerville's Veterans Memorial at their annual ceremony Monday morning.

The City of Centerville honored veterans at their annual Memorial Day tribute Monday at 9 a.m.
They showcased new additions to the Veterans Memorial at Stubbs Park on 255 West Spring Valley Road.
Three new enhancements were made to the park, according to a media release.

A new monument honoring the U.S. Space Force was revealed. This monument completes the plaza's representation of all six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The main monument and the brick walkaround path saw the additions of the Global War on Terror.
And a new entry lectern that 'highlights the features and symbolism of the plaza,' was added, according to the release.
Commander of the National Space and Intelligence Center for the U.S. Space Force Col. Marcus Sparks delivered the ceremony's keynote address.
Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton also spoke at the event.
'The Veterans Memorial Plaza enhancements reflect Centerville's continued commitment to recognizing service members past and present, and to ensuring future generations understand the cost of freedom,' Centerville Community Resources Coordinator Drew Simon said in the release.

Mass. fire captain who died unexpectedly remembered as ‘glue that held' department together
An active-duty Rockport fire captain who died unexpectedly on Memorial Day is being remembered for serving the town 'with immense pride and dedication.' Andrew Porter, 44, died at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester surrounded by his loved ones, according to a press release from the fire department. He was a 25-year veteran of the department. Born to Cathy and Jack Porter, Andrew Porter 'was a caring and deeply devoted son,' according to his obituary. He was also 'the big, protective brother' to his sister Lyndsay, 'with whom he shared a lifelong bond of love, laughter, and friendship and shenanigans.' At the Rockport Fire Department, Porter most recently served as the captain of Engine Companies 1 and 3, according to the fire department. He was also a specialist in the Rockport Department of Public Works Highway Division. 'He wasn't just a part of the fire department — he was the glue that held it together,' his obituary reads. 'His leadership, courage, and compassion has left an indelible mark on the dept. and the entire community." The couple was set to celebrate 14 years of marriage on May 28. Porter was also 'a proud and loving father to his two adoring daughters, Mackenzie and Raegan, who were truly the center of his world,' according to his obituary. 'To those who knew him, Andrew was more than just a family man and public servant. He was the truest kind of friend — reliable, warm-hearted and always ready with a helping hand," his obituary reads. Porter leaves behind his parents, sister, wife, daughters and many other beloved friends and relatives, according to his obituary. 'Andrew lived his life with integrity, kindness, and a fierce love for his family and community. He was loved deeply, respected widely, and will be missed beyond words. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those that loved him,' his obituary reads. Porter's funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday, June 2, at 10 a.m. at Saint Ann's Church in Gloucester, according to his obituary. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that a donation be made to help out his daughters, Mackenzie and Raegan, at Cape Ann Savings Bank on Main Street in Gloucester. Former Ohio State Buckeye standout Justin Fields inked a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets this offseason to make the jump from the Pittsburgh Steelers, a move that reunites the athletic QB with his former college teammate and Jets star Garrett Wilson. That is one reason for some optimism here. But ... Fields was never able to put it all together with the Chicago Bears, who selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in 2021. He was dumped to the Steelers a year ago, and Fields experienced something of a reclamation year in Pittsburgh, going 4-2 as a starter before Russell Wilson became healthy enough to reclaim the starting spot. Advertisement But now? With no clear competition for his starting role, Fields has the job ... and has high hopes for his first year as a Jet. 'I think I can be great,' Fields said this week. To some degree, Fields has a low bar in the sense that it won't be all that hard to be more successful than Rodgers and that bunch. Advertisement And of course, he's not alone in the fight, with new head coach in Aaron Glenn also helping lead a change in direction. But "desperation'' here is real. New York needs this to work. If Fields can excel as the Jets' starting quarterback, it'd be a steal of a contract for the Jets. With just a $20 million salary, Fields will be one of the lowest-paid veteran starting quarterbacks in the NFL. And it would be "great'' for that to pay off.
