OpenAI teams up with Google cloud in unlikely AI infrastructure alliance
ALBAWABA—In a move that underscores artificial intelligence's mounting infrastructure demands, OpenAI has signed a deal to use Google Cloud for additional computing capacity, marking a notable partnership between two fierce AI rivals. Reuters said the agreement was finalized in May after months of negotiations. It adds Google Cloud to OpenAI's growing portfolio of compute partners, alongside Microsoft, its primary backer and cloud provider.
The collaboration reflects a broader trend in the AI sector, where the sheer scale of resources required to train and deploy cutting-edge models forces competitors into unexpected alliances.
The partnership is a significant win for Google Cloud, which will provide infrastructure to support OpenAI's expanding AI workloads, including the training and operation of its flagship product, ChatGPT.
It also signals OpenAI's continued effort to diversify its compute dependencies, following other initiatives like the Stargate supercomputer project being developed with Microsoft and CoreWeave.
Despite the competitive tension, especially with ChatGPT posing the most serious challenge to Google's search dominance in years, this deal illustrates how AI development is increasingly dictated by hardware, data center scale, and compute efficiency rather than rivalry alone.
So far, neither OpenAI nor Google has officially commented on the agreement's financial terms or technical scope.
