Mumford & Sons: A rowdy, barnstorming singalong – minus one of the Sons

Telegraph12-03-2025

Britain's favourite purveyors of folk rock are back plying their trade on the high streets, following some adjustments behind the scenes. Mumford & Sons may have lost one of their Sons since they last appeared in the UK in 2019, but it was very much business as usual on stage for an intimate comeback show at London's 2,300-capacity Kentish Town Forum. Banjos, double bass, acoustic and electric guitars, horns, drums, keyboards and mass harmonies were deployed with a gusto that suggested nothing has really changed.
It was a notion affirmed by the roaring delight of a crowd who bellowed singalong parts as if they were at a sporting stadium serenading their heroes to victory. When the band played breakout 2009 hit Little Lion Man early in their set, the noise was deafening, an absolute storm of 'Oh-oh-oh's from stalls to balcony that seemed to take the band aback.
'It's been too long,' admitted bandleader Marcus Mumford contritely, the core trio of keyboardist Ben Lovett and bassist Ted Dwane all grinning with a kind of abashed amazement at their voluminous reception. 'It's good to be home.'
Mumford & Sons last album was Delta in 2018, and they haven't played a full show in the UK since multi-instrumentalist Winston Marshall exited in 2021. It was one of the most curious splits in rock history, with the sensitive and gifted Marshall making some relatively innocuous remarks in support of a Right-wing sympathising American journalist, then effectively kicking himself out in a huff about his right to exorcise 'free speech'. Since that time, Marshall hasn't made any music but has hosted an occasional 'culture warrior' podcast series for the Spectator, which was bought by his hedge fund manager father, Sir Paul Marshall, last year. It remains baffling that anyone would give up this kind of intense, direct, passionate musical connection with an audience to become a podcaster, but let's hope he's happy.
Mumford & Sons seamlessly introduced four new songs, with comeback single Rushmere being received like it was a nostalgic classic. I was particularly taken with a mournful ballad about anger and compassion called Where It Belongs that could serve as an elegiac gesture of friendship to their lost comrade. The tone of Marcus Mumford's voice was replete with notes of sorrow and wisdom, his band mates supporting him with delicacy. There is a strand of critical disdain that dismisses the Mumfords as Coldplay in grandfather shirts, but it overlooks the emotion and care that goes into finely wrought songs that genuinely connect with audiences.
Unfortunately, a club venue like the Forum is not a great place for acoustic sensitivity. There was a lot of noise from the bars in quieter moments, whilst fighting twice broke out bringing the show to a halt. 'Rowdy boys!' noted Marcus bemusedly as troublemakers were muscled out by security. A security guard told me someone spat in his face, then shrugged, 'And they seemed like such a chill crowd!'
It was a rambunctious, barnstorming show, albeit the barn wasn't quite big enough for the occasion. Mumford & Sons have announced upcoming arena and outdoor dates, where the cheery singalong community spirit might better be appreciated. The band themselves seemed united, committed and delighted to be back in action, whilst their fans were near delirious to have them. A final singalong encore of I Will Wait reached a pitch of excitement that surely equalled anything this old venue has hosted before. Mumford & Sons are decidedly back in business.

Flight attendant explains why you should never swap seats on a flight

TikTok video creator and flight attendant Leanna Coy explained why she doesn't like to switch seats whens she is flying as a passenger, arguing that doing so is risky business A flight attendant has warned that seat switchers on planes are risking it all. Leanna Coy recently published a TikTok video titled ' Why you shouldn't switch seats on the plane' that explains exactly that. The commonly touted reason flight attendants typically tell off-seat switchers is that the plane's boarding plan is designed to put an even number of passengers on each side of the plane. ‌ Too many on one side, and the aircraft can be a little trickier for the pilot to fly. ‌ However, Leanna Coy has a whole different reason. The American flight attendant was recently asked to switch seats with a passenger on a United Airlines flight. "Normally, I am absolutely 100 per cent against changing seats. Your lack of planning should not constitute me having to move," Leanna explained. However, on this occasion, the flight attendant couldn't think of a good reason not to swap, so she obliged. She immediately began to have doubts about her decision. "I'm already on edge about it," she said. According to Leanna, if the person you've switched with does anything to "act up" on the plane, the behaviour would be associated with her seat number. That means any breach of the aircraft's rules, such as vaping in the bathroom or throwing snacks at fellow passengers, could wrongly be pinned on her. Leanna argued that such a thought was not as far-fetched as one might think. "I see what goes down on the plane. If this lady decides to go smoke in the bathroom or whatever, that could come back to me," the world-weary flight attendant explained. ‌ "I realised I'm flying United. If you know anything about United's service, if you want to buy drinks or anything, you have to put your card onto the app ahead of time, which I've done before." This means that the passenger who swapped with Leanna may be able to access her card to pay for items. The off-duty cabin crew member asked one of her colleagues if that was indeed the case, and they confirmed that it was. "'Now, do I think this lady was trying to scam me out of money on my card? No. But that's just something to be aware of. I fully support you if you don't want to switch seats. You are entitled to the seat that you chose," Leanna said. It is not a rare occurrence for chaos to break out on a flight or for passengers to indulge in a bit of bad behaviour. At the end of last year, a passenger caused chaos after allegedly attempting to open the emergency door mid-flight. The incident took place on a Copa Airlines flight on Tuesday night. Footage of the incident shows a man being restrained in a headlock while a crew member tried to attach plastic handcuffs to his wrists. Two passengers – Marcelo Ribeiro and Everaldo Torres – reportedly helped to restrain the man, according to local reports. Marcelo attempted to reason with the passenger when he noticed him trying to open the door, which ignited a brawl.

Dakota Johnson furious Chris Martin was 'dragging his feet' on wedding date

Actress Dakota Johnson and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin separated after nearly eight years together, which reportedly left the Fifty Shades film series star feeling "incredible pain" Dakota Johnson became unhappy longtime beau Chris Martin was "dragging his feet" over their wedding date, sources have claimed. The couple are believed to have ended their eight-year relationship in part over frustration around this, as Dakota, 35, was "sick" a date hadn't been set. The pair got engaged years after starting their on-off relationship in 2017, following Chris' divorce with actress Gwyneth Paltrow. ‌ A source told Page Six: "She was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding." Chris, 48, had been married to Gwyneth for 13 years and has two children with the actress. ‌ And other sources close to Dakota and Chris understand the couple have had disagreements about having kids together. Another insider said: "They broke up over Chris Martin not wanting to have more kids." Unlike the Coldplay singer, Dakota has never been married previously and she doesn't have any children. A source previously told the Sun: "They really tried to work through their issues but the age gap was often a problem. She'd [also] expressed that she may want children in the future, whereas Chris is kind of done with that part of his life." The source further told the outlet that Johnson and Martin had been "back and forth on issues for years" — and had discussions about everything, including children. The split reportedly left Dakota, who was in the Fifty Shades film series and last year's Madame Web, feeling "incredible pain". Coldplay's epic world tour continues and Dakota has been away on shoots for upcoming films Materialists and Verity recently. It is thought their flourishing careers have also provided challenges for their relationship. ‌ A source had told The Sun: "Dakota wanted this relationship to work. She not only loves Chris, but his two kids, and that loss feels incredibly painful. The decision to end things was amicable, but Dakota is finding it hard. Over the past year, it became clear that their relationship had stalled and wasn't moving forwards. "Settling down, as in Chris properly taking his foot off the pedal, isn't going to happen. And, ultimately, it was one of the many straws that broke the back of them." When news of the couple's split emerged recently, an insider told the press: "They just haven't been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. "Breakups aren't instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they'd get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore... Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them."

Love Island fans 'rumble' first Casa Amor bombshell - and it's a past Islander

Love Island 2025 viewers are convinced they know the first name to be confirmed for this year's Casa Amor before the twist has even been confirmed on the ITV2 series Viewers think they already know which former Love Island star is set to enter the famous second villa, Casa Amor. During the series and just as the couples have usually formed strong bonds, the series airs a second villa twist with new arrivals. For a few days the original boys and girls are split up in separate villas, with a group of new boys and girls arriving to cause drama. ‌ The twist has often led to unexpected betrayals, shock exits and new couples. Ahead of the show confirming if it will air this year or not, fans think they already know someone who will enter as part of the shake-up. ‌ Sophie Lee was axed from the show on Tuesday night in a brutal dumping, after her partner Harry was stolen by Shakira. Sophie's exit left fans stunned with many gutted to see her go so early on. But some viewers are now convinced her time on the show isn't over. With a recent series seeing a dumped girl return to the villa for Casa Amor, viewers are now speculating Sophie will be back on the show in a matter of weeks, as a bombshell in the second villa. Taking to X, fans guessed the twist would happen with one fan writing: "I reckon Sophie will re-enter the villa as a bombshell by the end of next week at the latest or she will re-enter in Casa Amor." Another said: "Dw Sophie you'll be back in 4 weeks for Casa Amor." A third viewer begged: "Nah bring Sophie back for Casa Amor she deserves a chance." A fourth fan agreed: "Bring her back for casa amor!!" as a fifth viewer posted: "Gutted for her and bring back Sophie as a bombshell or Casa Amor." The comments kept on coming with one reading: "They better bring Sophie back as a Casa bombshell. Justice for Sophie." Another said: "BRING SOPHIE BACK FOR CASA AMOR!" ‌ It comes after Sophie was axed from the show in the latest episode. Despite not initially being at risk of an early exit, the motivational speaker and author was abruptly booted out of the villa after her man Harry was chosen by newly single Shakira. It was Shakira who had been told by host Maya Jama in the previous episode that she could be leaving within hours. Shakira had just 24 hours to woo another man, after her partner Ben was stolen by American bombshell Toni. ‌ Blu, Conor and Harry all chose to opt for Shakira, knowing full well she'd only be able to pick one of them. It wasn't an easy choice, more so because she knew, as clarified by Maya, that the girl left single would be going home instead of her. With the three boys standing, Shakira's fate was sealed. It was then Helena, Alima and Sophie who were at risk. It came down to Shakira choosing out of the three boys, with some encouragement from Maya. Maya urged the Islander to remember why she was here, no doubt trying to lessen her panic over sending a girl home but also so she would make the right choice. With that, Shakira named Harry as the man she wanted to steal. Sophie was immediately dumped from the villa as a result, as Maya confirmed she was now single and would be leaving the show.
