Catalans battle but romp for Rhinos
Catalans were involved in the hardest game as they were pushed all the way by Halifax at The Shay. There were no points in the first half and it was a penalty goal from Arthur Mourgue that put them ahead.Fouad Yaha grabbed the opening try in the 64th minute but it was not until the 78th minute that Cesar Rouge's score sealed a hard-fought win for the French side. As the French side toiled, Leeds were the biggest winners of the day as they ran in 16 tries against Wests Warriors. The match with the London-based amateurs was switched to AMT Headingley and it was one-way traffic.Ryan Hall grabbed a hat-trick on his second Rhinos debut following his move from Hull KR, which was matched by Sam Lisone.Jack Sinfield, son of rugby league great Kevin, and Morgan Gannon crossed twice each while there were further tries from Riley Lumb, Jake Connor, Cameron Smith, Matt Frawley, Alfie Edgell and Tom Holroyd.
Wolves and Saints make comfortable progress

Jay Weatherill scored a consolation try for Whitehaven. In a game played at Sewell Group Craven Park, home of Hull KR, St Helens scored seven unanswered tries in beating West Hull. Two from Jon Bennison, plus tries from George Whitby, Harry Robertson and Matt Whitley had things sewn up by the break.Saints eased up in the second half against the amateurs, with only a debut try from new stand-off Tristan Sailor and one from Lewis Murphy.
Hull and Wakefield score combined 24 tries
Hull FC got off to a winning start in their first competitive outing under new Australian head coach John Cartwright.Playing in Featherstone, Clayton Shephardson's try briefly had York Acorn level at 6-6 as he cancelled out Lewis Martin's first score before the Super League side took over.Debut tries from Cade Cust and John Asiata - a Challenge Cup winner with Leigh Leopards in 2023 - were followed by a score from Denive Balmforth to make it 24-6 at the break.Martin added two more for his first career hat-trick while Callum Kemp and two from Harvey Barron rounded the afternoon off for Hull.Wakefield Trinity are preparing for their Super League return after a year in the Championship and they put on a strong show in their final warm-up.Goole had shocked London Broncos in the previous round but there was never any danger of a repeat as Trinity ran in 15 tries.Lachlan Walmsley grabbed three, there was a pair apiece from Caleb Hamlin-Uele and Matty Storton, one from Liam Hood, Max Jowitt, Oliver Russell, Jack Croft, Corey Hall and one each from experienced duo Mike McMeeken and Tom Johnstone following their moves from Catalans Dragons.

Wales bring in Ben Flower to help add steel for World Cup

The 37-year-old from Abertridwr will be part of Sean Lynn's set-up for the summer training campa ahead of a two-Test tour to Australia and then the World Cup. Flower has been appointed as collision coach and has an impressive CV in that department. He played for the Dragons academy and represented Wales at under-20, 18 and 16 level alongside the likes of Dan Lydiate, Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies but then changed code after an attempt to covert him from back row forward to hooker. Flower played for the Celtic Crusaders and then the prop became a key figure for Wigan when winning three Super League titles, the World Club Challenge and the Challenge Cup, while he also won 17 caps. After hanging up his boots, he coached the South Wales Jets rugby league side and was part of the Wales Women's coaching team at the last World Cup in New Zealand. Flower said: 'Being involved with Wales is always a privilege and being asked and to have the chance of being involved with my country is an honour you don't turn down. 'Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.' Lynn, who is yet to enjoy a victory as national boss, believes Flower will add steel to a side whose fitness he questioned during a miserable Six Nations. He said: 'The W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.'

Chelsea in talks to sign £17m Jadon Sancho replacement during Club World Cup

Chelsea have opened talks to sign a replacement for Jadon Sancho during the Club World Cup, according to reports in France. Sancho was hoping to earn a permanent move to Stamford Bridge after joining the Blues on loan from Manchester United last summer. Chelsea were open to keeping the winger at the club despite his inconsistent form last season but were unable to reach an agreement with the player during contract negotiations. The Blues would have had to spend around £25m to keep Sancho but decided instead to pay a £5m penalty and send him back to Manchester United. Despite this, Enzo Maresca remains keen to strengthen in the wide positions this summer, with the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke all available for summer moves. French outlet L'Équipe say Chelsea have made contact with Lyon over a deal for Belgium international Malick Fofana. Fofana enjoyed a promising first season at Lyon following a £17m move from Belgian side Gent last summer. He featured in Lyon's Europa League quarter-final clash with Manchester United, which the Red Devils won 7-6 on aggregate. Chelsea have reportedly asked Lyon about the feasibility of a deal for Fofana, who earned his first international appearance last year. The interest from Chelsea comes after fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest expressed interest in signing Fofana, who turned 20 in March. The highly-rated winger is contracted to Lyon until the summer of 2028 but it has been suggested the Ligue 1 side could be open to a sale. Chelsea, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season and won the Conference League, are currently in the United States for the Club World Cup. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's first group game against MLS side Los Angeles FC, Maresca confirmed he was planning to sign a new winger this summer. More Trending 'Jadon is not with us so for sure that is a position [winger] we need to do something,' Maresca told reporters. 'We have Noni [Madueke], Pedro [Neto] and Ty [George] only as the proper wingers so something for sure is going to happen. 'When the transfer window is open, for sure, we can do something.' WSL to expand to 14 teams in 2026-27 with new promotion/relegation play-off

It requires the approval of the Football Association board but, if it gets the green light, 14 teams will compete in the women's top flight from next year. It means the 2025-26 campaign WSL will conclude with a relegation/promotion play-off. 'Over the past few months, WSL Football has led a thorough and robust, consultative process backed by research and analysis which explored multiple options that could drive the game forward and help it reach its potential,' Doucet said. An update on the structure of #BarclaysWSL and #BarclaysWSL2 for the 2025-26 season 🏆 — Barclays Women's Super League (@BarclaysWSL) June 16, 2025 'Our priority was to find a route that would benefit the whole women's game pyramid, and we believe this next evolution of women's professional football will raise minimum standards, create distinction and incentivise investment across the board. 'Subject to the approval from the FA board, expanding the BWSL to 14 teams will stimulate movement between leagues and through the pyramid which increases opportunities. 'The introduction of a promotion/relegation play-off creates distinction for the women's game and introduces a high-profile, high-stakes match.' If the expansion from a 12-team WSL to 14 gets FA approval, it offers three Women's Championship clubs the chance to gain promotion during the 2025-26 campaign. The top two of the Championship will go up automatically and the third-placed side will take on the team which finished bottom of the WSL in a play-off. We're not just a league. We're a movement. This is the new era of Women's Super League Football.#BarclaysWSL #BarclaysWSL2 — Barclays Women's Super League (@BarclaysWSL) May 12, 2025 The Championship will continue as a 12-team league with 'additional promotion opportunities' from the FA Women's National League Northern and Southern Premier Divisions at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. 'The method for these promotions, and any impact further down the pyramid, will be confirmed by The FA in due course,' a WSL Football statement read. It means from the 2026-27 season, the 14th-placed team would be relegated and replaced by the winner of the Championship. A relegation/promotion play-off between the 13th-placed club in the WSL and Championship runner-up would then determine the final place in the top-flight.
