Pune bridge collapse: Rs 5 lakh aid announced for families of deceased, says District Collector

Following the collapse of a bridge over the IndrayRiver in Maharashtra's Pune district on Sunday afternoon, the district administration on Monday announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the four individuals who lost their lives in the tragedy.According to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, the announcement is part of a broader response to the incident, which saw 55 people fall into the river. Of these, 51 were successfully rescued, and 38 are currently receiving treatment.Speaking to ANI, Dudi provided an update on the situation, noting that an aerial survey was conducted today to finalize the search operation, ensuring no one remains unaccounted for."A total of 55 people fell due to the bridge collapse. Out of 55, 51 people were successfully rescued. Treatment for 38 people is still going on in the hospital. The condition of all the persons is stable. Unfortunately, four people died, and their bodies have been identified. There is no report of a missing person now. This afternoon, we conducted an aerial survey at the spot to finalise the search operation," Dudi stated.Dudi also outlined the formation of a probe team to investigate the collapse, comprising officers from the Irrigation Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Forest Department, and Police. "We have formed a team under the District Collector with officers from the Irrigation Department, PWD, Forest dept, and Police - to probe the incident, bring out the shortcomings, and review the existing SOPs," he said, emphasising the need to identify lapses and strengthen safety protocols.Additionally, he has requested a structural report on all old bridges in the region to assess their condition and prevent future tragedies.The District Collector reiterated a public appeal to avoid visiting such locations during the monsoon season, given the heightened risks."Again, I appeal to the public to avoid visiting such places during the monsoon season. I have asked for a structural report on all old bridges... Financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to the families of each deceased," he added.Earlier today, a high-level meeting of top administrators of the state was convened, chaired by the State Chief Secretary, Sujata Saunik, at her office, with the Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Rural Development Department Secretary (Roads), Divisional Commissioner of Pune, Pune District Collector, Pune Chief Executive Officer, officials from the Public Works Department, and Pune Superintendent of Police joining virtually.

Four promised jobs with LIC, duped of Rs 46.5 lakh in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: The dream of a secure future turned into a costly nightmare for four temporary workers. They were duped out of Rs 46.5 lakh by a Paldi resident who had promised to get them permanent jobs at the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) office on Relief Road. In a complaint filed with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Sunday, Bipin Makwana, who works as a security guard outside the LIC office, named Chikesh Shah as the accused. The 57-year-old told police that he met Shah in 2023 at a nearby Jain temple. Over time, Shah gained Makwana's trust. He claimed to have strong connections and offered to get permanent jobs with the LIC for Makwana and his friends. On April 30, 2023, Makwana and his three friends met Shah at Sampurna Hall in Kankaria, where Shah reportedly explained the job offers and demanded money according to each person's post. The smallest amount was Rs 10,000, Makwana told police. The group started collecting money and, allegedly, made the first payment of Rs 5 lakh in cash on April 13, 2023. Over the next few months, they allegedly paid cash to Shah in instalments. In two more meetings held on Jan 2 and Feb 2, 2024, Shah promised the men that permanent orders would be issued soon. Later, Shah gave a notarised declaration on Nov 26, 2024, with a cheque and a written assurance that the work would be completed by Jan 31, 2025. However, no job order was issued. A case was registered with the DCB police station under IPC Sections 406 and 420 for breach of trust and cheating. The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) began an investigation into the case.

HC junks BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy's plea to quash extortion case
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Monday dismissed the quash plea filed by BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy in an alleged extortion case . Kaushik Reddy moved an anticipatory bail plea before the high court immediately after his quash plea was dismissed. The case was filed by the wife of a granite businessman, who alleged that citing public outcry over his granite quarries, the legislator had extorted Rs 25 lakh and was seeking Rs 50 lakh more. The prosecution placed evidence before the court about the threatening calls from the legislator to the businessman. Police produced witness statements of the drivers and others to prove their charge of extortion. Though the counsel for the legislator argued that he was calling the businessman to inform him about the grievance of the people, Justice K Lakshman sought to know if that was the job of a legislator. "He should have asked the relevant authorities to verify and act. Instead, he made direct calls to the businessman," the judge said while dismissing Kaushik Reddy's plea.
