How the Lamontville Swimming Academy is transforming young lives

Lungisani Zulu, lifeguard and swimming coach started the Lamontville Swimming Academy to teach children how to swim. Image: Tumi Pakkies / Independent Newspapers In the heart of Lamontville, south of Durban, a movement is quietly transforming young lives, one lap at a time. The Lamontville Swimming Academy, founded in 2023 by local lifeguard and community leader Lungisani Zulu, is not just teaching kids to swim; it's instilling discipline, confidence, and dreams in a community often overlooked. Zulu noted that Lamontville has produced several lifeguards for Durban's beaches. 'Our swimmers have competed at national and even international levels. Swimming has always been part of Lamontville's DNA. I started the academy to bring back that culture and give our kids a real shot.' Inspired by his own upbringing and the legacy of local swimming coach Sthembiso Madiya, Zulu said it is about giving back. 'I believe in serving the community. These kids have talent. I wanted to gather them, mentor them, and help them reach higher,' he said. The Lamontville Swimming Academy was founded in 2023 by local lifeguard and community leader Lungisani Zulu. Next Stay Close ✕ The academy has already made an impact, thanks in part to support from the community and generous sponsors. 'Engen came on board in 2023 and helped us with kickstarting the academy, providing us with swimming boards, goggles, and equipment,' said Zulu. 'We've also received amazing support from DJ Thukzin, who lives in Lamontville, and Arena South Africa, who have been with us since the beginning. We are grateful.' The academy caters to a wide age group, nurturing swimmers from as young as five years old up to young adults. 'We start training them early, from age five, because that's when you can really build strong water skills and confidence,' he explained. 'But we don't limit it; some of our swimmers are in their teens, and we even work with young adults who want to improve or become lifeguards. It's about opening the door for everyone who wants to learn, no matter their age.' Mayenziwe Mbutho said, 'As a child from a disadvantaged community, I see myself changing that. I regard swimming as a career; I want to be a professional.' For Sphamandla Mbuyisa, the academy represents more than sport: 'My dream is to become a strong and confident swimmer, maybe even compete nationally. The academy taught me teamwork, sharing, and caring for others.' Lubanzi Mkhize added that swimming had brought confidence. 'I feel safe knowing I have one of the best life skills. This is my place of growth.' And for Lwandile Radebe, swimming brought personal transformation. 'I joined because I love being in the water. Now I can swim at the beach without fear. It gave me hope, got me off the streets, and taught me that I have purpose.' Sbongakonke Yolanda Mkhize said her dream is to become a professional swimmer and a lawyer, to serve justice and make her community proud. 'Swimming is about more than water; it's about presentation and discipline.' However, the academy faces significant challenges. 'We only have one pool in Lamontville, a 25-metre unheated pool. In winter, it's a struggle. We can't train properly,' said Zulu. 'We also lack transport to bigger facilities like King's Park and need more equipment. We even work with schools to try and ensure the kids have proper nutrition. But we need help.' Support from parents has been a game changer. 'In the past, support from families was missing. But now, the parents of our swimmers are behind us. Their involvement motivates me too,' said Zulu. Zulu concluded, 'We're building more than swimmers; we're shaping future leaders, teaching life skills, and giving kids a reason to believe in themselves.' THE MERCURY

Summer Walker's Instagram shade: Wandi Ndlovu's BBL compared to chicken thighs

Summer Walker shared a picture mocking Wandi Ndlovu's BBL comparing it to chicken thighs, which sparked controversy online with Walker facing public backlash. Image: Instagram US singer Summer Walker has netizens raving on social media after she shared a side-by-side picture of influencer and reality TV star Wandi Ndlovu's BBL, being photoshopped to chicken thighs. Ndlovu's recent body transformation, which she debuted in March, has been a significant topic of discussion in the past few months. Just recently, the 'Heart Of A Woman' singer shared the picture that compared Ndlovu's BBL to chicken thighs, sparking online discussion about both their BBLs as they both underwent cosmetic procedures. However, netizens were not impressed with the 29-year-old for throwing shade at Ndlovu's BBL; they flooded the internet with comments about Walker's BBL being just as bad. Video Player is loading. While another user added: 'Summer throwing stones living in a glass house. Her BBL is botched, too.' In response to the picture, the 'This Body Works For Me' reality TV star said that she is going to reverse the BBL. To shut down the topic, Ndlovu shared a screenshot of a conversation between her and Walker where they resolved the issue. On June 24, Ndlovu also took to Instagram to share a conversation between her and the US singer, revealing that there is no tension whatsoever between them, with Walker clarifying that she just shared the picture because she thought it's funny. 'Girl, I just wanna say that I think you're beautiful and yo body looks great, I don't know who you are but I just thought it was hilarious that someone photoshopped roasted seasoned chicken thighs on someone lmao like that's so ridiculous. 'All I do is repost funny s***t on my finsta, I accidentally posted it on my main, but it was nothing directed towards you,' she said. Record breaking Clifton apartment: Here is how much it sold for — report

Cape Town continues to be a haven for high-end property as international investors seek beauty and stability. The lifestyles of the rich and the famous have no better setting than the opulent streets of Clifton. To rubber stamp the suburb's position as the premier location for wealthy property owners, a record-breaking purchase was been sealed. Cape Town's property market continues to thrive, with industry experts attributing the city's appeal to its overall 'value proposition'. Luxury Clifton home A five-bedroom apartment along Clifton's 1st Beach has reportedly just been purchased for a whopping R145 million. The property is furnished with the highest quality finishings and offers the mesmeric views of the ocean that are synonymous with the Atlantic Seaboard. Lance Cohen of Lance Real Estate secured the deal, revealing that the buyer was a former South African living in Monaco. Cohen told the Sunday Times that the sale represented the 'record for the highest price paid for an apartment sold in South Africa,' claiming the previous record was R120 million. The average asking price of homes currently on the market in Clifton range between R30 million and R60 million, making this sale an eye-catching purchase. Other properties currently being marketed by Cohen include a six-bedroom house in Fresnaye for R75 million and R95 million four-bedroom house also located in Fresnaye. Cohen could break his Clifton record again if a five-bedroom house currently for sale sells for its asking price of R160 million. Cape Town very attractive While the sale may represent the highest paid for an apartment, South Africa's most expensive home was reportedly sold for roughly R700 million in 2023. Known as Casablanca, an eight bedroom and 13-bathroom Camps Bay colossus is believed to have fetched a cool US$35 million. The Residential Property Price Index released by Stats SA earlier in June shows Cape Town over 10 index points higher than Johannesburg. For first time property sales and resold properties, Cape Town is ahead of Johannesburg by almost 15 and 13 index points, respectively. Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO John Lawson credits this to the Mother City's overall functionality. 'The gaping disparity mirrors a similar trend in municipal infrastructure development and service delivery, with property investors favouring Cape Town's value proposition,' stated Lawson.
