Bengaluru's ride-hailing apps replace ‘advance tip' with ‘voluntary' tag after minister Pralhad Joshi's criticism

Bengaluru: Your ride wasn't booked, but the aggregator app already wanted a tip? Well, things just got slightly more polite. Days after Union minister Pralhad Joshi asked Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to investigate why ride-hailing apps were nudging users for tips before the ride even began, a new word has quietly rolled into the app interface: 'Voluntary tip'.
Platforms like Namma Yatri and Ola seem to have heard the buzz and the backlash. Now, when users are booking a ride, the advance tip option comes with a little label that spells out its nature loud and clear: Voluntary. Riders can skip the tip, and the app won't hold their ride.
Uber, on the other hand, has not introduced a "voluntary" label, but appears to have reduced the frequency with which the advance tip prompt appears during the booking process.
While the option remains part of the app, it is now shown less prominently, possibly as a way to soften the user experience without making direct changes to the interface.
Many users said the change does make a difference. Priya Srisha, 34, a resident of Indiranagar, said, "I use ride-hailing apps almost every day to commute to work. A few weeks ago, I noticed the app was asking for a tip before the ride even started. It felt odd; how do I know if the service deserves a tip before the driver has even shown up? But now, after the update, there's a small label next to the tip box that says 'voluntary'.

That word makes a big difference. I no longer feel guilty for skipping it. Before this, it almost felt like tipping was part of the fare."
Suresh R, 42, a resident of Bellandur, said, "I use both Ola and Uber. Ola now makes it clearer that tip is optional, calling it voluntary. Earlier, I thought not tipping might affect my chances of getting a good driver or lead to cancellation, especially during peak hours. But now, the app continues to the next screen even if I don't add a tip.
Uber seems to have stopped showing the advance tip as often; it used to pop up almost every time, now it's more scattered.
It's a welcome change, honestly. Tipping should be based on the ride experience, not a pre-condition."
Uber was unavailable for comments on the matter.
Tip in advance unethical, exploitative: Minister
Prahalad Joshi posted on X, saying, "The practice of 'Advance Tip' is deeply concerning. Forcing or nudging users to pay a tip in advance, for faster service is unethical and exploitative.
Such actions fall under unfair trade practices. Tip is given as a token of appreciation not as a matter of right, after the service. Taking cognisance of this, I had asked CCPA to look into it and today CCPA has issued a notice to Uber in this regard, seeking explanation from the platform.
Fairness, transparency and accountability must be upheld in all customer interactions."
As an update to this issue, he tweeted, "CCPA is investigating other apps, they will also be served notice if they are found indulging in such practices."

This Brand Dominated Two-Wheeler EV Market In May With 107% Growth In Sales
Last Updated: TVS first clinched the top spot in April, surpassing industry giants like Bajaj Auto and Ola Electric. That month, it sold 19,940 units and secured 22% of the market. India's electric two-wheeler (E2W) landscape underwent a dramatic reshuffling in May, with TVS Motor tightening its grip at the top of the leaderboard. The Chennai-based automaker not only held on to its pole position for a second consecutive month but also posted an impressive 107% year-on-year (YoY) growth, selling 24,562 electric scooters and capturing a commanding 24% market share. This surge came as the overall E2W segment recorded a 30% YoY increase, reaching total sales of 1,00,270 units in May. TVS's rise has been driven by strategic product diversification and aggressive network expansion. The company recently introduced new variants of its flagship iQube scooter, offering battery options ranging from 2.2 kWh to 5.1 kWh. Moreover, its dealership network has swelled to 950 touchpoints, up from fewer than 750 a year ago. TVS first clinched the top spot in April, surpassing industry giants like Bajaj Auto and Ola Electric. That month, it sold 19,940 units and secured 22% of the market. Its continued dominance in May underscores a broader shift in the electric mobility sector, where incumbents are increasingly displacing once-dominant disruptors. Bajaj Auto, maker of the Chetak EV, surged into second place in May, registering a 135% YoY growth. The Pune-based company sold 21,770 units and matched TVS with a 22% market share, overtaking Ola Electric, which continues to face a steep decline. Once the undisputed leader in India's E2W space, Ola saw its market share plummet to 18% from a towering 48% in May 2024. It sold 18,499 units in May, down 51% YoY. The decline has triggered concerns among analysts, who now question Ola's near-term growth trajectory. Kotak Institutional Equities, for instance, revised Ola's FY26–27 volume estimates downward to 32–34%, citing tepid industry momentum and delays in the company's much-anticipated electric motorcycle launches. Ola, along with Ather Energy, managed to sell 65,000 units combined in Q1 FY26, with 44,502 units moved in April and May. Meanwhile, Ather Energy, fresh off its IPO, emerged as another standout performer. The Bengaluru-based firm posted a 109% YoY growth, selling 12,841 units in May. Much of its success is attributed to the Ather Rizta, a family-oriented scooter that has resonated well beyond Ather's traditional southern markets. The company now holds a 13% market share, up from just 8% last year. Hero MotoCorp also reported a significant rebound, with sales soaring 191% YoY to 7,164 units in May. Its market share has doubled to 7%, marking a notable comeback in a highly competitive sector. Industry watchers say the latest shake-up in rankings signals a deeper maturation of India's EV market. While early entrants like Ola sparked the initial wave of adoption, legacy automakers with established infrastructure and diversified portfolios are now leveraging their scale to assert dominance. Looking ahead, TVS Motor appears poised to consolidate its lead. CEO KN Radhakrishnan confirmed that new electric vehicle products are in the final stages of development and slated for release in the coming quarters, further hinting that the southern powerhouse may only be getting started.

Elon Musk's X Rolls Out XChat with Encrypted Messaging, Vanishing Texts, and File Sharing
Elon Musk is once again steering his social media platform X in a bold new direction with the launch of XChat, a revamped messaging service promising Bitcoin-style encryption, disappearing messages, and the ability to send virtually any kind of file. The feature, still in its beta testing phase, was announced by Musk himself in a series of posts over the weekend. 'All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file,' Musk shared on X. The new tool also includes audio and video calling, marking a major upgrade to X's existing direct messaging system. Notably, Musk emphasized that XChat will allow users to communicate without linking a phone number, supporting cross-platform functionality—another step toward increased privacy and flexibility. According to Musk, XChat has been developed using the Rust programming language and is built on a completely new architecture, a departure from previous systems. Its "Bitcoin-style encryption" suggests a blockchain-inspired, secure approach to data protection, although full technical details have not yet been disclosed. The announcement comes shortly after X temporarily disabled encrypted DMs, citing internal improvements. On May 29, the company noted the pause was to implement updates. It now appears this short break was laying the groundwork for the XChat rollout. While the company hasn't yet published a formal blog post or FAQ, tech insiders and app researchers have been tracking the development of the new feature. Reverse engineer Nimo Owji had already spotted signs of XChat in April, posting screenshots of a 'vanishing mode' that offers customizable message timers ranging from five minutes to 24 hours. According to TechCrunch, the beta version of XChat is currently available to a small group of early testers. There's no confirmed release timeline for a wider launch or clarity on which features might remain exclusive to premium users. Still, many on the platform are already sharing sneak peeks and impressions. X first introduced encrypted messaging in May 2023, though it was limited to paying subscribers. Under Musk's leadership, the platform has increasingly shifted key features behind a paywall, including SMS-based two-factor authentication. Now, XChat seems poised to further expand premium capabilities while also aligning with Musk's larger vision for the platform. The rollout of XChat ties into Musk's grander ambition of transforming X into an 'everything app' akin to China's WeChat. Musk has previously stated his goal is for X to support messaging, payments, dating, and even banking—all under one roof. During a company-wide meeting last year, he outlined plans for X to eventually function as both a digital bank and a dating platform. In separate news, X recently faced a significant outage on May 31 across the United States. More than 34,000 user complaints were logged on Downdetector, primarily from mobile app users. Some users reported being shown welcome screens as though signing in for the first time. Just days earlier, similar issues had affected users in India. With the launch of XChat, X continues to evolve rapidly under Musk's direction, pushing boundaries in communication, privacy, and the broader social media experience.

Crypto Prices Today: Bitcoin tops $105,000 as market eyes Fed signals and institutional flows
Bitcoin climbed past $105,000 on Monday, rebounding from weekend lows amid strong institutional demand and cautious investor optimism ahead of key macroeconomic events. ADVERTISEMENT As of 1:23 PM IST, the world's largest cryptocurrency was trading at $105,366, up 1% in the last 24 hours. Ethereum, however, slipped marginally by 0.1% to $2,506. The global cryptocurrency market cap rose 0.9% to $3.29 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap, with gains seen across several altcoins. XRP, Solana, Dogecoin, and Cardano edged up between 0.3% and 1.2%, while Bitcoin's dominance remained steady at 63.7%. The market witnessed heightened volatility over the weekend after US President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions with new tariff threats, triggering risk-off sentiment across global markets. According to CoinSwitch Markets Desk, Bitcoin briefly dropped below $104,000, triggering over $600 million in liquidations—the highest in four months—before bouncing back above $105,000, supported by institutional buying around the $103,000 level.'Bitcoin is trading steadily above $105,000, bouncing back from weekend lows of $103,200,' said Alankar Saxena, Co-founder and CTO of Mudrex. 'The market is now focused on macroeconomic cues, especially Fed Chair Jerome Powell's upcoming speech. Technically, $106,000 is a key resistance zone. A breakout above $106,800 could push the price toward $108,000.'On the flip side, failure to hold current levels could send Bitcoin back toward $103,500, he added. ADVERTISEMENT Delta Exchange's research analyst Riya Sehgal noted that Bitcoin is testing support near $103,900 within a descending broadening wedge pattern. 'A decisive move above $106,800 could lead to targets near $110,000. However, if $106,500 fails to hold, prices may dip toward $102,500 or even the $93,000–$97,000 range.'Ethereum faces resistance at $2,620. A breakout may lead to $2,720, but downside risks to $2,470 and $2,420 persist if bulls fail to reclaim control, Sehgal added. ADVERTISEMENT While Bitcoin ETFs saw $616 million in outflows over the last two days—led by BlackRock's IBIT and Ark 21Shares' ARKB—Ethereum ETFs attracted inflows for a tenth straight day, signalling continued institutional interest in the altcoin despite broader market Vishwanath, Co-founder and CEO of Unocoin, said Bitcoin's current consolidation near $105,000 comes after a record high of $111,970 in May 2025. 'This healthy pause shows investor confidence amid growing institutional inflows and declining exchange supply. With increasing regulatory clarity and the U.S. government's supportive stance, the long-term sentiment remains positive.' ADVERTISEMENT Vishwanath added that forecasts are pointing toward potential peaks of $180,000 to $250,000 by year-end, though short-term volatility should be expected.'Investors should focus on macro trends and avoid being swayed by daily swings,' he said. 'This phase may be the calm before Bitcoin's next major leg up.' (Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own.
