Saudia Plane, Carrying 442 Hajj Pilgrims, Diverts In Indonesia Following Bomb Threat

A Saudi Arabian Airlines flight, carrying Hajj pilgrims, was diverted in the Indonesian airspace following a bomb threat on Tuesday. The Saudia flight, carrying 442 pilgrims, including 207 men and 235 women, was en route to Jakarta International Airport when it was forced to divert following a bomb threat sent via email. Saudi Airlines revealed that one of its planes received a security alert, prompting it to divert its flight from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia, as a precautionary measure. The Directorate General of Indonesian Civil Aviation said it received a report from Indonesia's airport operator 'regarding a bomb threat sent by an unidentified person via electronic mail.' The email at 07:30 am (0030 GMT) contained a threat to 'blow up' Saudia Airlines flight SV 5276 which was flying from the Saudi city of Jeddah to the Indonesian capital Jakarta, it said in a statement. After 10:00 am the pilot diverted the plane from its destination of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, a city on Sumatra island in western Indonesia. 'Upon identifying security and safety threats, the pilot decided to divert the landing to the nearest airport,' said InJourney Airports, Indonesia's airport operator. The airport evacuated the pilgrims and a bomb disposal unit swept the plane for explosive devices, the aviation body said in its statement. Eng. Abdullah Al-Shahrani, director general of Corporate Communications at Saudi Airlines, said that the plane landed safely and all passengers and crew were evacuated safely. The relevant authorities conducted routine checks that confirmed the aircraft's safety. He also reassured the passengers' families and the public of the safety of all those on board and its crew.

Airbus touts plane orders, Boeing focused on crash probe at air show

European aeroplane manufacturer Airbus announced Saudi and Polish orders for more than 100 aircraft at the Paris Air Show on Monday while US rival Boeing focused on 'supporting customers' after the Air India crash. The sales rivalry between Boeing and European aerospace giant Airbus usually drives the headlines as the world's top civilian plane makers announce many of their biggest orders at the air show in Le Bourget. But Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg said last week he was cancelling plans to attend the biennial event to spend time on the probe into the 787 Dreamliner crash. 'Our focus is on supporting our customers, rather than announcing orders at this air show,' a Boeing spokeswoman told AFP at the trade fair in Le Bourget. The London-bound Dreamliner crashed shortly after take off in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and crew and another 38 people on the ground. One passenger survived. For its part, Airbus announced that Riyadh Air, an airline founded in 2023, placed a 'firm' order for 25 wide-body, long-range A350-1000 aircraft. The deal would be worth more than $9 billion under 2018 catalogue prices -- which Airbus has since phased out as final sale prices vary according to contract terms and the version of an aircraft. The Riyadh Air deal could rise to 50 planes, Airbus said. Saudi aircraft leasing company AviLease placed a separate order for 30 single-aisle A320neo jets and 10 A350F freighters in a deal worth around $7 billion. The deal could rise to 22 A350F cargo planes and 55 A320neo aircraft. Polish airline LOT -- which has traditionally purchased planes from Boeing and Brazilian manufacturer Embraer -- picked Airbus for the first time, ordering 40 A220 planes worth $3.4 billion. Embraer announced that the Portuguese government had ordered a sixth KC-390 Millennium military transport plane after buying five in 2019.

Saudi startup Riyadh Air signed a deal at the Paris Airshow on Monday to buy 25 Airbus A350-1000 jets, the plane-maker said. The deal, announced shortly after Saudi leasing company AviLease placed an order for Airbus passenger and freighter jets, also includes purchase rights for another 25 planes, Airbus said. Airbus does not publish catalogue prices but the firm part of the Riyadh Air deal is worth around $4.6 billion after typical airline discounts, according to Cirium Ascend estimates.
