Home improvement employees perform lifesaving efforts during medical emergency
The Mount Dora Fire Department highlights the Mount Dora Lowe's employees who were honored at a City Council meeting for their lifesaving actions during a recent medical emergency.
On Monday, April 7, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m., the Mount Dora Fire Department jumped into action for a cardiac arrest emergency at Lowe's Home Improvement on US Highway 441. Thanks to the quick and courageous actions of the Lowe's employees, a life was saved before our brave first responders had a chance to arrive on the scene.
Store staff reported that the patient was alert and conversing with a cashier just before suddenly collapsing and becoming unresponsive without a pulse. Robyn McDonald, a Lowe's employee, quickly fetched the store's Automated External Defibrillator (AED), while Jimmy Givens and Rafael Valdez began administering CPR.
The team successfully delivered four AED shocks, resuscitating the patient before the arrival of emergency personnel.
When they arrived, the dedicated paramedics from the Mount Dora Fire Department and Lake County Fire Rescue offered compassionate advanced post-cardiac arrest care and swiftly took the patient to a nearby hospital.
At last night's May 20 City Council meeting, the Mount Dora City Council, in partnership with the Mount Dora Fire Department, recognized McDonald, Givens, and Valdez with Community Hero Awards for their decisive and life-saving actions.
'Had these individuals not acted so quickly and effectively, the outcome would have likely been much different,' said Fire Chief Hightower. 'This incident is a powerful reminder of the critical importance of community education programs, including CPR, AED usage, and emergency response training.'
This result clearly illustrates that bystanders, like the Lowe's Mount Dora team, are trained and ready to respond. The Mount Dora Fire Department continues to advocate for public training in CPR, AED use and Stop the Bleed, reinforcing the impact everyday citizens can have during medical emergencies.

Texans add lifesavers to the chain of survival in Houston
( NewMediaWire ) - June 05, 2025 - HOUSTON — The American Heart Association and Houston Texans gathered nearly 100 youth sports coaches from the Texans Showcase League, Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training on May 31 at the Houston Methodist Training Center. According to American Heart Association data, nearly 9 out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die, in part because they do not receive immediate CPR more than half of the time. The American Heart Association reports that as many as 23,000 people under the age of 18 experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital every year, with nearly 40% being sports related. It is a leading cause of death for student-athletes. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a person's chance of survival. The training is part of the Texans' commitment to improve bystander CPR and support the American Heart Association's work to double the survival rates of cardiac arrest by 2030, the goal of Nation of Lifesavers(TM) movement. Each participating coach also received a CPR Anytime Kit to continue the CPR education with other coaches, parents and volunteers extending the education surrounding the youth sports teams. CPR, especially if performed immediately, could double or triple a cardiac arrest victim's chance of survival. Compression-only CPR, known as Hands-Only CPR, can be equally effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of emergency response and is a skill everyone can learn. It is as simple as calling 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse and then push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Kyle Walter recognized for saving woman from life-threatening dog attack
Jun. 3—Kyle Walter received Great Bend's Exemplary Citizen Award at Monday's city council meeting, recognizing his heroic actions in rescuing a mail carrier when she was viciously attacked by two dogs on May 9. Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark spoke about the reason for the award. Shortly after 11 a.m. on May 9, as the U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was delivering mail in the 1400 block of Lakin Avenue, she was viciously attacked by two large, unrestrained dogs, Haulmark said. The dogs pulled her to the ground and began biting her multiple times, inflicting serious injuries. During this terrifying incident, Walter, a Great Bend resident who was nearby preparing a roofing estimate, heard the commotion and immediately sprang into action. "Without hesitation and with no regard for his own safety, Mr. Walter retrieved a shovel from his truck and ran to the scene. Using the shovel, he struck one of the attacking dogs, successfully stopping the assault and causing both animals to flee," Haulmark said. "Due to Mr. Walter's swift and courageous response, the life-threatening situation was brought to an end before even more serious injuries could occur." The mail carrier's wounds required several hundred stitches and ongoing medical treatment, Haulmark continued. "But it was without question that Mr. Walter's actions prevented even graver harm. For his bravery, selflessness and decisive action in defense of his fellow citizen, Mr. Kyle Walter is hereby recognized with an Exemplary Citizen Award. His actions reflect the highest standards of civic responsibility and human compassion and serve as an inspiration to our entire community." The City Council members and others in the room stood and applauded as Walter came forward to receive the award without comment. City Administrator Logan Burns commended Walter and said citizens continue to pray for the mail carrier's recovery. Mayor Cody Schmidt also thanked Walter on behalf of himself and the City, telling Walter citizens like him are what make Great Bend a great place. The dog's owner, Dakota M. Procopio, 23, was arrested on May 12 on Great Bend Municipal Court charges of dog at large, vicious dog and no rabies vaccination, as well as interference with a law enforcement officer. According to a news release, a Crimestoppers tip led investigators to Procopio's residence in Great Bend. He confirmed he was the owner of the dogs and that he had moved them to another residence in Raymond. The dogs were taken into custody by Animal Control for the state-mandated observation period.
