What travelers need to know as real ID deadline nears
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The countdown is on – real ID enforcement is officially one week away. Starting May 7th, South Carolinians and Georgians will need an updated ID to fly domestically or access federal buildings.
While Georgia is nearly fully compliant, many South Carolina residents scramble to catch up.
A gold or black star on your driver's license means you're ready to fly. But if you don't see it on the top right-hand corner… don't wait! The federal real ID enforcement deadline is just one week away, and millions across the southeast still need to get up to speed.
The Real ID Act was passed after 9/11 to boost national security, but its enforcement was delayed—until now. Starting May 7, 2025, the TSA will require a real ID or another accepted form, like a passport or military ID, for domestic flights and federal buildings.
Georgia is nearly 100% compliant, but in South Carolina, nearly 1 million residents, or 38 percent, still don't have theirs. The DMV says wait times are around 20 minutes, and coming prepared with the right documents helps. For quicker service, you can go on a Tuesday or Thursday. Without a real ID, you could miss your flight or be turned away at secure locations.
'We will continue to be issuing real IDs as we have since 2018. People can come and see us after the deadline in May or June, and we can still get them turned around and they'll be taken care of. We are more busier than usual at SCDMV of the offices right now,' shared Mike Fitts, the Public Information Officer for the South Carolina DMV.
South Carolinians can visit any DMV or use the Sweet Caroline app, while Georgians should head to a DDS Center – just make sure to bring proof of identity, your social security number, and two documents showing your current address.
Fast facts on where to go:
Deadline: May 7 — required for domestic flights and federal building access.
Where to get it: South Carolina – any SCDMV, Georgia – can visit any DDS location.
What you'll need: proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport), social security number, and two proofs of residency (like utility bills or a lease).
There's still time, but the clock's ticking – so check your ID now and plan that DMV visit!A real ID isn't legally required, but it'll make travel much easier down the road. This will keep your summer travel stress-free.

Need a U.S. passport? How to apply for one in Miami without an appointment
If you need a U.S. passport without an appointment, you better act fast. On Saturday, June 14, people can apply at a 'passport fair' in Miami-Dade County. Organized by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, the event will also offer assistance to those applying for a U.S. passport for the first time. According to the Department of State, only one post office in Miami will host the passport fair in June. Here are the details: Passport Fair in Miami The U.S. Passport Acceptance Fair has already been held in various cities and states across the country. Now, it's coming to Miami-Dade this Saturday, June 14, along with other Florida cities including Gulf Breeze and Milton. In South Florida, the one-day event will run from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Snapper Creek USPS post office, 11000 SW 104th St. The event is designed to make the process easier for both adults and minors applying for a U.S. passport for the first time, using Form DS-11. Adults who are eligible to renew their passport using Form DS-82 can apply online or by mail at any time and don't need to attend the fair. MORE: New relief for international travelers to the U.S. amid Trump-era restrictions Will you receive your passport at the fair? Passport acceptance facilities only offer routine and expedited processing services — they don't issue passports on-site. Each application is mailed to the Department of State for review and approval. If you need a passport for travel within two weeks, schedule an appointment at one of the 26 passport agencies or centers across the country. Another passport fair will also be held in July, but no Miami or South Florida locations are scheduled for that month. What documents do you need to apply? ▪ Completed DS-11 application form (do not sign until instructed by the acceptance agent) ▪ Proof of U.S. citizenship (such as an original naturalization certificate) ▪ Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID) ▪ Photocopies of citizenship and identity documents ▪ Passport photo (USPS offers photo services onsite) Fees: $130 for the passport book application plus a $35 acceptance fee. Form DS-11 also allows you to apply for a passport card, which costs $65, but is only valid for domestic flights and sea travel to nearby countries. For minors applying for a passport If you're applying for a passport for a minor, keep the following in mind: ▪ Provide a document that proves your relationship to the child such as a birth certificate or court order. ▪ The child must appear in person with both parents or legal guardians. If only one parent is present, written consent from the absent parent is required. ▪ Include the child's Social Security Number. If unavailable, a signed and dated statement must be submitted under penalty of perjury in accordance with U.S. law.

Your Costco ID is not valid for TSA entry
HONOLULU (KHON2) — If you've been thinking your Costco membership card is good enough for airport security, think again. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently made it clear that Costco cards will not be accepted as valid identification when you're flying. In a post on their official Facebook page, TSA shared: Hawaiʻi residents: Get your REAL ID before May 7 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not.' This statement comes after a lot of confusion from travelers, some of whom thought their Costco card, which has a gold star on it, would count as a REAL ID. Some of those who engaged with the TSA post even joked online, saying things like 'at least it has a STAR on it' or 'So, you're saying we should bring you a chicken?' But the truth is, a REAL ID is a special kind of ID that meets strict government standards. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, and it has taken nearly 20 years for all states to issue these you want to fly domestically, you'll need either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, a state-issued ID or another acceptable form of ID like a passport. You can get a REAL ID by visiting your state's driver's license office and providing documents like your full name, birth date, Social Security number, proof of address and legal status. You can click to learn more about state issued identification cards and for information on obtaining a Hawaii State driver's license.
