‘I briefly wondered whether I'd accidentally consumed shrooms': the psychedelia – and science – of full dome cinema

Since emerging in their present form in the 90s, full dome films have occupied a curious place in the cinema landscape. Exhibited at planetariums on a large curved display situated above the audience's heads, they offer a unique experience: more immersive than the traditional rectangular frame, though not as transportive as technologies like virtual reality.
Maintaining the social aspects of cinema, watching a full dome film is sort of like going to the movies, and sort of not.
If you've never experienced one, the Dome Under film festival is a good place to start. The 2025 program – which runs from 31 January to 2 February in Melbourne – contains 32 films from 15 countries, spanning documentaries to family animations to sci-fi productions that traverse the cosmos, throwing all sorts of trippy things at you.
One of my first full dome experiences was Pink Floyd's extravaganza for Dark Side of the Moon, a visual spectacle so wildly psychedelic I briefly wondered whether I had accidentally consumed magic mushrooms.
For Dome Under's festival director, Warik Lawrance, that formative experience was The Search for Life: Are We Alone, an alien short narrated by Harrison Ford. 'This is amazing, it's just so cool,' Lawrance recalls thinking when he watched it in 2005. 'I want to work in this medium!'
Lawrance has subsequently programmed countless titles that have screened at Melbourne's Scienceworks. He says children 'delight in the medium' while adults 'are usually in quiet amazement, looking at how vast the imagery above them is, and moving around to take it all in'.
This year's opening night film is Dark Biosphere, a Viggo Mortensen-narrated doco about micro-organisms that exist below the Earth's crust, without light or air. After a few picturesque introductory shots of rivers and mountains, the camera plunges into the water. At one point, we zoom out, and out, and out some more, all the way into space, revealing the Earth from a distance. I felt like I was leaving my seat and lifting into the heavens.
A full dome experience, says Lawrence, 'works particularly well when it's taking you to a new environment, perhaps one you couldn't possibly visit. The bottom of the ocean – or inside the human body – are great examples of that … The best question is not 'where am I putting something on the screen?' but 'where can I transport my audience to?''
Journeying across the universe is a common motif in this year's program. The handsomely animated kids production The Great Solar System Adventure lives up to its title; Stars of Classic matches visions of outer spacer with music from the likes of Beethoven and Vivaldi. In I Saw the Future, a huge floating head enunciates the technological predictions of the great author and futurist Arthur C Clarke.
It makes sense that scenes based in space look terrific in this format. After all, we are in a planetarium, where the ancient tradition of stargazing has been given a digital makeover, virtual skylines replacing real ones. But Lawrance says the reason space looks great is also about the kinds of light and colour being used.
'What works really, really well in planetariums are very dark scenes,' he says. 'Bright scenes light up the dome, and you're much more conscious of it being a screened surface. But when it's in space, and it's very black, you lose your sense completely of where the dome is.'
It's so enveloping that you might lose sight of your senses completely. 'I've had people who've come out of the planetarium and said to me, 'That was the most incredible 3D I've ever seen.',' Lawrance says. 'That's amazing, because it's not actually 3D at all.'

Pop music criticism, said Frank Zappa, was the work of people who can't write, about people who can't talk, for people who can't read. Half a century later and he's still right. Although pop is essentially a juvenile art form – its clearest strength and most obvious weakness – that doesn't stop reviewers pumping up performers as though Johann Sebastian Bach had decided to form an all-star band with Beethoven and Brahms. The Three Bs! Sign 'em up! The current pop reviewers for the Times and the Telegraph, Will Hodgkinson and Neil McCormick, clearly think they bear witness to giants. Like Pinky and Perky, these mature teenagers can trill 'we belong together', batting balls over the net in a contest of perfumed superlatives. Should Hodgkinson open with a 'sublime', his oppo will almost certainly return serve with an 'achingly beautiful'. 'Perfectly formed'. 'Apocalyptic opus'. 'Emotional depth'. 'Kaleidoscopic riches'. It can be difficult for readers to swivel their heads swiftly enough to follow these rallies. Pity the poor umpire, longing for a change of ends – and a restorative glass of Robinson's Barley Water. In recent years, the tousle-haired Hodgkinson has delivered his share of forehand smashes. He's fond of 'art music', which less credulous listeners call 'pretentious drivel', but it never hurts to take the folk they write about at their own estimation. McCormick can certainly smack 'em back from the baseline. Selecting 25 'albums that rocked the world' – those long-players which 'shaped the soundtrack of our times' – he came up with some scorching winners. 'New template… transformative power… cynical political epic… profoundly sincere… creative synergy… towering, symphonic wonder… new vistas of self-expression'. As weary copy-takers used to ask journalists in the good old days: 'Much more of this?' Plenty. McCormick can keep it up for five sets – without a banana. Nevermind by Nirvana, he said, 'recalibrated a genre that had become fatuous and overblown'. How they love their genres – and oh, the recalibration! Dark Side of the Moon, meanwhile, Pink Floyd's multi-million copy seller, offers 'perhaps the most epic conclusion to any album in rock history'. What, pray, is that history? Sixty years, tops. Pop became rock in the summer of 1966, when Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker formed Cream, Jeff Beck left the Yardbirds, and Chas Chandler persuaded Jimi Hendrix to leave New York for London. Beck, Clapton and Hendrix changed the sound of the electric guitar – and what has followed is essentially a footnote. There is a paradox here. Although pop writers care little for longer-established forms, like opera and orchestral music – which are deemed to be snooty – they love to coat the music they like with a patina of significance, if only to convince themselves they are not wasting their time. Hence those empty words. The list of 'essentials' is bog-standard: Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, U2 McCormick's attachment to jargon is truly impressive, so it was no surprise to see 'template' appearing once more in his choice of the No. 1 album, Abbey Road. There was also a 'sublime summation' – the sort of alliterative guff Leonard Sachs gave punters as he banged his gavel on The Good Old Days. Abbey Road at No. 1, and Rubber Soul nowhere! What kind of judge is that? If a critic can't get the Beatles lined up properly, he ought to find a kitchen that needs a pot washer. Nor did McCormick find room for Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys – though there was space for the ghastly Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, which is not a pop record at all. As for Joni Mitchell, the Alpha and Omega of Californian self-absorption, she is 'lyrically… on a plane where Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are her only serious rivals'. Clearly this chronicler of popular music has never heard of Lorenz Hart, Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Burke, Frank Loesser, Stephen Sondheim and Hal David. Paul Simon should also be there. To borrow from the late football writer Brian Glanville: 'Mitchell, me no Mitchell. Simon towers above her in sheer class.' The list of 'essentials' is bog-standard: Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, U2. There is (gulp) no Pet Sounds or Music from Big Pink – and Revolver limps in at No. 11. Even the dogs in the street know that was the best record the Fab Four made. You may not be surprised to learn, however, that Revolver established yet another 'template'. So it's game, set and match to Master McCormick. The centre court rises.

Organisers put new traffic measures in place for this year's event after similar issues in previous years. This included a separate entrance for cars arriving from Chippenham and diversions for non-event traffic.A spokesperson for the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust said: "This year's Middlewick House Open Garden event drew a record crowd of more than 15,000 people across the weekend, including an unprecedented number of people turning up on the Sunday to buy tickets on the door."We had people visit from across the UK - we apologise to those affected by the traffic build up around Corsham and those impacted by the delay exiting the car parks. "We will be collating all feedback and adding it into our review process ahead of the 2026 event."The trust works with Wiltshire Police to help elderly and vulnerable people with home security. 'Two hours to exit' BBC Wiltshire's Jeremy Stern went to the fundraiser and said there were "hundreds" of cars trying to use one "narrow" exit."By the time the traffic started moving it was chaos, as frustrated drivers looked for any which way to get out of the car park," he said."The car park attendants did their best but there weren't enough of them to marshal so many lines of traffic."It took two hours for us to get out. Some people I spoke to said they had been waiting even longer."
