Trump denies leaving G7 for Iran-Israel truce, slams Macron

Middle East Eye6 hours ago

Donald Trump has dismissed claims that he cut short his appearance at the G7 summit in Canada to broker a truce between Israel and Iran.
In a social media post, the US president took aim at Emmanuel Macron, accusing the French leader of being 'publicity seeking' and insisting the reason for his return to Washington was 'much bigger' than a ceasefire.
Macron had earlier implied that Trump had made a truce 'offer', prompting the Republican president to respond: 'He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington … Emmanuel always gets it wrong.'
Trump gave no further detail on what prompted his departure, only telling followers to 'stay tuned'.

South African assets sink on risk aversion after Israel's strike on Iran

South Africa's rand and government bonds fell steeply in early trade on Friday, 13 June 2025 after Israeli military strikes on Iran drove investors toward safe havens. At 0657 GMT, the risk-sensitive rand traded at 18.04 against the dollar, 1.6% weaker than Thursday's close. The rand had been on a strong run for weeks, helped by local coalition partners resolving a budget dispute, talk of a lower inflation target and strong precious metal prices. The escalation in hostilities in the Middle East - a major oil-producing region - adds a fresh layer of uncertainty for financial markets at a time of pressure on the global economy from US President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies. No major domestic data releases are due on Friday, but next week local consumer inflation and retail sales figures will be published. The yield on South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was up 16.5 basis points to 10.25%. All rights reserved. © 2022. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

US lawmaker says nuking Gaza would harm Israel

Republican congressman Randy Fine has said using a nuclear bomb on Gaza would be 'a terrible idea' because radioactive fallout would reach Israel and kill Israeli hostages. Speaking to CNN on Monday, Fine, an ardent Zionist, defended previous comments in which he appeared to back the use of nuclear weapons against Palestinians. 'Nuking Gaza would be a terrible idea - the fallout would drift into Israel,' he said. 'It would kill the hostages.' When pressed about the risk of killing civilians, including women and children, Fine replied: 'War is a messy thing.' In May, Fine told Fox News that Israel should follow the model of World War II, when the United States used nuclear weapons to force Japan's unconditional surrender. He argued that negotiations with Palestinians were not viable. 'There is something deeply wrong with this culture and it needs to be defeated,' he said, repeating his belief that only overwhelming military force can bring an end to the conflict.

Israel threatens Iranian leader with same fate as Saddam Hussein

Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz has issued a stark warning to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, comparing him to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who was toppled and executed following the 2003 US-led invasion. 'I warn the Iranian dictator against continuing to commit war crimes and launching missiles at Israeli civilians,' Katz said, according to Israeli media reports. He added: 'He would do well to remember the fate of the dictator in the country neighbouring Iran who chose this same path against the state of Israel.' Katz also reiterated threats to continue Israeli strikes on Tehran, urging residents of the Iranian capital to leave, as Iran reported dozens of civilians killed and hundreds wounded since Israel's attacks began on Friday.
