Nicaragua legislature votes to end dual citizenship

Straits Times17-05-2025

MEXICO CITY - Nicaragua's National Assembly approved a constitutional amendment on Friday to eliminate dual citizenship in a move that would impact thousands of people, including government opponents.
The reform of articles 23 and 25 of the constitution must be approved again in 2026 to take effect, as constitutional amendments require approval by two legislatures.
The reform passed with all 91 of the votes in the legislature, which is dominated by the ruling Sandinista Front.
Under the reform, Nicaraguans acquiring another nationality would lose their Nicaraguan citizenship. Foreigners seeking Nicaraguan citizenship would need to renounce their original nationality, except for Central Americans who can retain it, the legislature's President Gustavo Porras said.
Many Nicaraguans hold dual citizenship, often with the United States. The Ortega government has stripped Nicaraguan citizenship from over 400 individuals, according to opposition group Monitoreo Azul y Blanco, including 222 political and social leaders who Ortega deported to the U.S. in February 2023. Freedom Flotilla Coalition says aid vessel approaching Gaza-bound ship left

The British-flagged Madleen boat is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip. PHOTO: REUTERS CAIRO - A vessel that was approaching Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Gaza-bound charity ship the Madleen has left, the coalition said early on June 9, after an alarm was sounded on the ship warning of a possible interception. Hours earlier, the Israeli Defence Minister Israeli Katz said he told the military to stop the boat carrying activists including Sweden's Greta Thunberg and a symbolic quantity of aid, including rice and baby formula, to Gaza in defiance of an Israeli blockade. The coalition posted on its Telegram account a voice memo of Mr Thiago Avila, one of the activists onboard, saying "we have been surrounded by many lights all at once; they were circling our boat but in the end they kept going their own way." Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the British-flagged Madleen boat is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by Israel. Ukraine boxer Oleksandr Usyk wants Trump to ‘live in his house' to witness war

PHOTO: REUTERS Ukraine boxer Oleksandr Usyk wants Trump to 'live in his house' to witness war LONDON - World heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has offered Donald Trump the chance to live in his house in a bid to help the US president understand the war in Ukraine. Mr Trump had vowed to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine 'in 24 hours' if he was elected president. But there has been no end to Russia's invasion since Mr Trump returned to the White House in 2024. Ukrainian boxer Usyk, who has been a tireless campaigner for peace in his homeland, believes Mr Trump needs to have a clearer view of the dire situation if he is to find a solution to the crisis. The 38-year-old has urged the president to join him at his house in Ukraine to see for himself the damage done by the war. 'I advise American President Donald Trump to come to Ukraine and live in my house for one week,' Usyk told BBC Sport on June 8. 'Only one week. I will give him my house. Live please in Ukraine and watch what is going on every night. 'Every night there are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough.' Mr Trump clashed with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky during a contentious summit meeting in the Oval Office in February. Mr Trump warned Mr Zelensky to show more gratitude for America's help in peace talks before telling him to leave the White House. Asked if Mr Trump could be convinced to change his opinion, Usyk said: 'I don't know. Maybe he'll understand, maybe he won't.' Usyk, who has won all 23 of his professional bouts, is currently in a training camp to prepare for a rematch with IBF champion Daniel Dubois on July 19 at Wembley. But the WBC, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion said the war is never far from his mind. 'I worry about what happens in my country. It's very bad because Ukrainian people have died,' he said. 'It's not just military people, children, women, grandmothers and grandfathers, too.' AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

The day the music died at the Shangri-La

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth seen on a monitor delivering an address at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore on May 31. PHOTO: AFP The mood music seemed incongruous. On stage, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth was thumping his chest, declaring how the United States was rebuilding its military, restoring a warrior ethos and re-establishing deterrence. Warning darkly of a gathering threat to the region, he said: 'There's no reason to sugar-coat it. The threat China poses is real. And it could be imminent.'
