NIA Arrests 3 Militants Involved In 2 Separate Killings In Manipur

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two persons belonging to banned militant groups for their involvement in the brutal killing of a woman and burning and looting of houses by armed militants in Manipur's Jiribam district in November last year, officials said on Tuesday.
NIA sources said that the accused Nongthombam Meiraba, hailing from Bishnupur district and belonging to the proscribed insurgent outfit - United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was involved in the actual shooting of the woman, identified as Zosangkim.
The other accused, identified as Sagolsem Sanatomba alias Surchandra Singh alias Piba of Thoubal district, was a member of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), another Manipur insurgent outfit and was part of the team involved in the carnage that occurred at Zairawn village.
The two accused are in NIA custody till May 17 in the case for which investigations are continuing.

In another incident, NIA has arrested a cadre of the militant outfit -- Kangleipak Communist Party-People's War Group (KCP-PWG) -- faction in an abduction and murder case relating to the ethnic clashes that took place in Manipur in 2023.
According to the central probe agency source, the KCP-PWG militant identified as Waikhom Rohit Singh, a resident of Thoubal Pakhangkhong Leirak in Thoubal district, was picked up by an NIA team for his involvement in the conspiracy and execution of the crime.
He is currently in judicial custody after completing his remand with the NIA. In November 2023, a CRPF team deployed on 'naka duty' in Kangchup Chingkhong area of Imphal West district had detained a Bolero vehicle. The vehicle was found carrying five persons belonging to one of the two main communities involved in the ethnic clashes in the northeastern state.
A large mob of angry people belonging to the rival community had then gathered around and forcibly taken away four of the individuals, while one had managed to escape.
The bodies of three of the four victims were recovered later. NIA, which had taken over the case in February 2024 on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, is continuing with the investigation.

Anti-Terror Agency NIA To Probe Killing Of Murder-Accused Suhas Shetty In Mangaluru: Report
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty by a group of assailants in Mangaluru, Karnataka, last month, official sources said on Sunday. The Union Home Ministry has asked the federal anti-terror agency to probe the case related to the "targeted killing" of Shetty "with the intention to create terror in the minds of people", they said. Citing a home ministry communique in this regard, the sources said the accused involved in the murder case are allegedly members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), a banned outfit. "The NIA has received an order from the Union Home Ministry to investigate the case. The process to register the case is underway," a source said. The NIA probe is required due to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, the sources said, citing the home ministry order. Shetty was killed at Kinnipadavu in Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru on May 1. He was travelling in a vehicle with his associates when five-six assailants, who came in a car and a pick-up vehicle, intercepted him. The assailants attacked Shetty with sharp weapons, causing grievous injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries The gruesome attack was captured on a CCTV camera, which showed the assailants attacking him with machetes and swords. Shetty was reportedly associated with various local Hindutva groups and had several cases registered against him, including for assault, murder and unlawful assembly, according to the local police. Karnataka Police on June 3 arrested Abdul Razak (59), a resident of Mangaluru, for allegedly conspiring and sheltering the prime accused in Shetty's murder case. The total number of arrests made in this case stood at 16, police said. According to police, Razak is the father of Mohammed Muzammil, one of the key accused, and the father-in-law of Nausad Vamanjoor alias Chotte Nausad, another suspect in the case. He allegedly conspired with them and others at his residence to plan the murder and later helped the accused evade arrest, according to the police. Suhas Shetty murder: Dakshina Kannada MP and VHP welcome NIA probe
Welcoming Union Home Ministry's decision to hand over investigation of the murder of Hindutva activist and murder accused Suhas Shetty to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Sunday, June 8, said Dakshina Kannada district wants freedom from anti-national elements that are active in the district and become an active part of Prime Minister's vision of Viksit Bharat. In a statement here, Capt. Chowta said he wrote a detailed letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 2 expressing the need for an NIA probe following Shetty's murder in full public view in Bajpe on May 1. He had expressed the need of a comprehensive and impartial investigation as there was suspicion of involvement of members of banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in the murder. The nation cannot afford to allow radical, anti-national, and jihadi forces to fester in any part of the country. One month into the letter, the Union Home Ministry decided to hand over probe of Shetty's murder to NIA. Shetty's murder was a larger pattern of growing lawlessness, emboldened Islamic radicalism, and anti-national elements that continue to operate in coastal Karnataka. Following targeted killing of BJP cadre Praveen Nettaru in July 2022 by members of banned PFI organisation, life of Suhas Shetty, another young Hindu, was extinguished in a similar manner. The NIA probe will bring to light how radical, anti-national, and jihadi forces were silently operating in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the country. This was the first step by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to root out anti-national forces from Dakshina Kannada, he said. A delegation led by State BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra had met the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and placed the request to the State government to hand over investigation of Suhas Shetty murder to NIA. The BJP has no confidence in Siddaramaiah-led Congress government rendering justice to murder victim's family as the State government has continued with its appeasement politics. The government has political understanding with Social Democratic Party of India, which is extended form of banned PFI, the MP alleged. VHP reacts Vishwa Hindu Parishad Dakshina Karnataka joint secretary Sharan Pumpwell, in a statement, said with NIA investigation the VHP has all confidence that all those who were involved in Suhas Shetty's murder, those who conspired and financed the act, will be booked and justice will be delivered to victim's family members. By handing over to NIA, the Union Home Ministry has rightly answered demand of lakhs of Hindus and it was a moral victory to the fight of Hindus. In response to the murder, the VHP had given a bandh call on May 2 across Dakshina Kannada. A massive protest meet was held on May 25 in Bajpe demanding NIA investigation into the murder. Mr. Pumpwell was arrested on May 27 for allegedly giving inciting statements on the night of May 1, which led to damage of public property, communal tension and public peace on May 2 and subsequent days.
