Amazon loses AWS generative AI boss as tech talent shuffle heats up

SAN FRANCISCO:
Amazon
's AWS recently lost its vice president overseeing generative artificial intelligence development, as the competition for talent heats up.
Vasi Philomin
told Reuters in an email that he left Amazon for another company, without providing specifics. A company spokesperson confirmed that Philomin had recently left after eight years with Amazon. Philomin helped lead
generative AI
efforts and product strategy, and oversaw foundation models known as Amazon Titan.
The spokesperson said Rajesh Sheth, a vice president previously overseeing Amazon Elastic Block Store, had assumed some of Philomin's responsibilities.
In his biography, Philomin said he also helped create and lead
Amazon Bedrock
, a hub for using multiple AI models and one of AWS's premier products in its battle for AI supremacy. He was a frequent speaker at AWS events, including Amazon's annual cloud computing conference in Las Vegas.
Amazon is working to bolster its reputation in AI development, after rivals like OpenAI, and Google have taken an early lead, particularly with consumer-focused models.
The Seattle-based online retailer and technology powerhouse has invested $8 billion in AI startup Anthropic and integrated its Claude software into its own products including a new revamped version of voice assistant Alexa that it's rolling out to customers this year.
In December, Amazon introduced its Nova AI models which provide for text, video and image generation. Earlier this year, it added to the lineup with a version called Sonic that can more readily produce natural-sounding speech.
Companies are employing creative techniques to hire top AI talent, including using sports industry data analysis to help identify undiscovered talent, Reuters reported last month. As a result, compensation has skyrocketed for some.
However, as Amazon races to produce more advanced AI, it said it expects its own success will lead to fewer corporate jobs, according to a memo from CEO Andy Jassy last week. Job growth limits will be driven in particular by so-called agentic AI, which can perform tasks with minimal or even no additional input from people.
"As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote.

US says deal with Beijing will expedite rare earth exports from China

The United States has reached an agreement with China on how to expedite rare earth shipments to the US, a White House official said on Thursday, amid efforts to end a trade war between the world's biggest economies. President Donald Trump earlier said the United States had signed a deal with China on Wednesday, without providing additional details, and that there might be a separate deal coming up that would 'open up' India. During US China trade talks in May in Geneva, Beijing committed to removing non-tariff countermeasures imposed against the United States since April 2, although it was unclear how some of those measures would be walked back. As part of its retaliation against new US tariffs, China suspended exports of a wide range of critical minerals and magnets, upending the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. 'The administration and China agreed to an additional understanding for a framework to implement the Geneva agreement,' a White House official said on Thursday. The understanding is 'about how we can implement expediting rare earths shipments to the U.S. again', the official said. A separate administration official said the US-China agreement took place earlier this week. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was quoted as saying by Bloomberg: 'They're going to deliver rare earths to us' and once they do that 'we'll take down our countermeasures.' On Friday, China's commerce ministry said the two countries recently confirmed details on the framework of implementing the Geneva trade talks consensus. It said China will approve export applications of controlled items in accordance with the law. It did not mention rare earths. While the agreement shows potential progress following months of trade uncertainty and disruption since Trump took office in January, it also underscores the long road ahead to a final, definitive trade deal between the two economic rivals. China has been taking its dual-use restrictions on rare earths 'very seriously' and has been vetting buyers to ensure that materials are not diverted to US military uses, according to an industry source. This has slowed down the licensing process. The Geneva deal had faltered over China's curbs on critical minerals exports, prompting the Trump administration to respond with export controls of its own preventing shipments of semiconductor design software, aircraft and other goods to China. In early June, Reuters reported China had granted temporary export licenses to rare-earth suppliers of the top three US automakers, according to two sources familiar with the matter, as supply chain disruptions began to surface from export curbs on those materials. Later in the month, Trump said there was a deal with China in which Beijing would supply magnets and rare earth minerals while the US would allow Chinese students in its colleges and universities.

Adani Group Becomes India's Fastest-Growing Brand, Value Up By 82%

New Delhi: The Adani Group has emerged as the fastest-growing Indian brand this year, with its brand value up by 82 per cent, according to a new report. The Group's growth is attributed to aggressive and integrated infrastructure focus, surge in green energy ambitions, and increased brand equity across key stakeholders, said the 'Most Valuable Indian Brands 2025' report by London-based Brand Finance. The value of the Adani brand surged from $3.55 billion in 2024 to $6.46 billion, marking a substantial gain of $2.91 billion -- a testament to the Group's strategic clarity, resilience and commitment to sustainable growth. The increase in value this year is greater than the entire brand valuation reported in 2023, helping the Adani Group climb to rank 13 from 16 last year, according to the report. The company has seen record-breaking revenue, unprecedented growth and historic profitability. Addressing the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) this week, Gautam Adani, the Chairman of the Adani Group, said "In FY25, our numbers were strong. Across all our sectors, we did more than just scale. We created impact, inspired change, and most importantly, deepened our national commitment". In terms of consolidated numbers, at the Group level, revenues grew by 7 per cent, EBITDA by 8.2 per cent, and Net Debt-to-EBITDA ratio remained healthy at 2.6x. Total revenues were Rs 2,71,664 crore, and adjusted EBITDA was Rs 89,806 crore. "Our capital investment across businesses is set to break all records. We anticipate an annual CAPEX spend of $15-20 billion for the next five years. These are not just investments in our Group, but investments in the possibilities for doing our part to build India's infrastructure," said Gautam Adani. Adani Power crossed 100 billion units of generation -- a scale never before matched by any private sector company. It is now well on track to reach 31 GW capacity by 2030. Meanwhile, showcasing a resilient economy amid robust policies, the collective brand value of the top 100 Indian companies reached $236.5 billion in 2025 to date. The Brand Finance ranking report results remained stable, reflecting a year of steady gains for major Indian brands across sectors.
