Irish rugby player to join the Love Island villa this summer

An Irish rugby player will be joining the Love Island villa this summer. Connor Philips from Limerick will be the latest Irish person looking for love. The 25-year-old plays as a winger for Munster and played for the Ireland 7s team as well. Advertisement The type of Islander I'd like to couple up with is… Someone who is really sure of themselves, ambitious, a bit of a go-getter and good craic. I like dark eyes and I don't mind a dominant woman. You're a 10 but… I don't like to answer to anyone else. I like to do my own thing. It's something I'm working on for a relationship. Hopefully I've improved! What's your biggest ick? Being too needy, or needing to do everything together. I like someone to be independent and do their own thing and then we come together and do our thing. It's morning in the Villa, where would we find you? Sunglasses on, iced coffee in my hand, I'm ready to go. Advertisement What's your claim to fame? I play professional rugby. I'm a winger. If your love life up until now was a movie, what would it be called? 'Still Trying' - it's got to be a rugby pun, hasn't it? If you were the CEO of anything, what would it be? Mischief. I'm the class clown type vibe. Being in big teams and groups all the time, I'm always mixing things up, stirring the pot. Would Maya hire or fire you based on your flirting skills alone? Definitely hire. I ask girls if they want to go halves on a baby. It doesn't work, but it gets them laughing. It's an ice-breaker, not a serious question of course! Advertisement If your love life was a business would it be booming or would you be bankrupt? I'd be keeping my head above water… I'm doing nicely as a single person, but I need a relationship, I need to settle down and invest in some stocks. What kind of airport person are you; arrive 3+ hours early/ last one to gate? Even if I am a bit early, I'll still be the last one on the plane. I travel a lot so I've picked up a few tactics, like getting on last and finding a nice empty seat near the front. Do you have any unusual skills/secret hobbies? Singing. My go to is Mario's 'Let Me Love You'. I've sang in front of a lot of people before. If it's your first rugby match you have to get on the bus and sing -they loved it! Trai Hume wants Northern Ireland's young guns to set standard for squad

Trai Hume expects Northern Ireland to feed off the success that has been enjoyed by several of their young stars over the past few weeks. Hume and his Sunderland team-mate Daniel Ballard have been celebrating earning promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic play-off campaign that ended with victory over Sheffield United at Wembley. And that came at the end of a month in which Conor Bradley received his first Premier League winner's medal with Liverpool and fellow 21-year-old Justin Devenny lifted the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Ballard, 25, and Hume, 23, will double the Premier League contingent in Michael O'Neill's squad, something that Hume believes can only help as they look ahead to their World Cup qualifying campaign that starts in September. 'I don't think there's any doubt,' Hume said. 'You're exposing yourself to the best league in the world, so you want to try your best to do well there and if you can, you're going to become a better player because of it. 'Obviously me and Dan are still young, Conor and Justin are still young, so hopefully we can have a lot of years in the Premier League and that will only benefit Northern Ireland going forward. 'I have no doubt there's other players in the squad that will get themselves into the Premier League as well. Obviously it's us four at the minute and hopefully we can try and push the lads and bring them up to the standard that we're going to set.' Northern Ireland are preparing for Saturday's friendly away to Denmark and Tuesday's match at home against Iceland, but their eyes are already on September when they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign with an away double-header against Luxembourg and Germany, with Slovakia also in Group A. Playing in high-pressure games like the Championship play-off final is valuable experience ahead of facing the likes of Germany, and Hume said: 'I think it will help us deal with the atmosphere a bit better. Obviously, the calibre of players will be a lot different. I think we will try our best to deal with that. 'I think the big games you do play in, you get used to the emotion of it and the challenge of playing in front of the crowd and not getting caught up in the emotion of the game. 'Germany is definitely going to be a lot different than Sheffield United. Like I say, we will just have to try our best to be ready and be focused for it.' Germany are obvious favourites to top the group, with Northern Ireland vying to beat Slovakia and Luxembourg to second place and the play-off spot that would bring. Ballard said they would treat their games against those two nations as cup finals. 'I think we can make a really positive start to the group,' he said. 'I think the games against Luxembourg and Slovakia are going to be really important for us. I think they will all be like cup finals. 'I feel like we have a real opportunity this year to go and put ourselves in a strong spot to qualify.'

‘Such a shame' as promising jockey forced to retire aged 23 on ‘medical advice'

PROMISING jockey Gearoid Harney has been forced to retire from racing aged just 23 on 'medical advice'. The conditional rider 'kept getting concussed' when he fell and suffered a heavy crash at Fakenham in January. 1 Harney was rushed to hospital for urgent care and racing was abandoned soon after his slip from David Pipe's Micronormous. Unfortunately, while he made a recovery from that incident, doctors had advised him to stop racing altogether. A post from Pipe said on X: "Wishing conditional jockey Gearoid Harney @Gearoid84997068 the very best for the future as he unfortunately will not be returning to the saddle following his fall in January on medical advice. "He rode ten winners for me, the highlight being Kingston Queen's Listed Bumper success." Pipe added: "The scans showed there was still some damage there and it wasn't right for him to get his licence back. The decision was in their hands. "He kept getting concussed when he fell and the IJF have been very supportive, so he'll have to have a think about what he'll do in the future." Punters were quick to offer Harney their support, with some saying it was a great 'shame' he had been forced out. A post from Irish Racing referenced the tragic death of Michael O'Sullivan in a race earlier this year as a reminder of the dangers jockeys face every day. The message read: "We wish Irish jockey Gearoid Harney all the best as he is forced to retire due to a severe head injury from a fall at Fakenham in January. "In a challenging year for our sport, marked by the tragic passing of Michael O'Sullivan, this incident further highlights the risks jockeys face." .
