His dramatic return to the soap came amid his ex Aaron about to get married.
Speaking to press, Ryan has shared the real reason behind his big Emmerdale comeback.
The actor said: "I have been able to do some cool stuff while I have been away.
"I've got to do things like All Creatures Great and Small, Miss Scarlet, Casualty and Silent Witness.
'I wasn't as busy as I would have liked, but that meant I got to be around my kids a lot, so I was very lucky.'
Meanwhile, he had also moved to Brazil with his wife and young children.
Ryan added: 'It was great and such a nice life experience."
The Sun exclusively revealed Ryan would be reprising his role as Robert for a brief stint.
A source speaking at the time said: 'Ryan has a lot of respect for the show and its fans and he really wanted to give them a treat so he agreed to come back for a brief stint.
'It's going to be a huge surprise for fans especially the Robron fans who have missed Robert desperately since Ryan quit.
Emmerdale fans work out explosive twist as John Sugden arrives in the village - and they aren't happy
'Nothing was seen as being too extreme to keep the secret with fake names on scripts, smuggling him in and out of the studios and keeping everything very tight.'
Aaron Dingle's biggest storylines
The character Aaron Dingle (formerly Livesy) made his Emmerdale debut all the way back in 2003. Current actor Danny Miller took on the role in 2008. Here are some of Aaron's biggest soap storylines over the years.
McFarlane family: After Aaron returns to the village in 2008, he is arrested by Ross Kirk (Samuel Anderson) for possession of drugs. His mother Chas ' (Lucy Pargeter) family later learn he is a drug courier for the McFarlanes.
Coming to terms with his homosexuality: Initially, Aaron questioned and struggled to come to terms with his homosexuality. He ultimately confided in friend and guardian Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt).
Romantic advance towards Adam Barton: At one point, Aaron begins dating Holly Barton (Sophie Powles) and befriends her brother Adam (Adam Thomas). Aaron tries to kiss Adam after they are involved in a run-off road collision. Embarrassed, he tells Adam that he misunderstood the situation. Aaron sleeps with Holly, however, Adam informs his family that he thinks Aaron is gay. Aaron denies it but Holly ends the relationship.
Child sexual abuse: In 2015, it was revealed Aaron had been sexually abused by his father Gordon (Gary Mavers) when he was from the age of 8 before Gordon kicked him out. Ultimately, Gordon was imprisoned years later - but took his own life while in prison.
Relationship with Jackson Walsh: Aaron and Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock) started dating after a tumultuous start to knowing each other. Their story ultimately ended in heartbreak, as Jackson died by assisted suicide.
Suicide attempt: A harrowing storyline from 2010 saw a then-teenage Aaron attempt to take his own life.
Relationship with Robert Sugden: Aaron and long-standing character Robert Sugden were romantically linked following the latter's return in 2014. Nicknamed "Robron", the pair married in 2018, however, Robert exited the soap in 2019.
The star - who played scheming Robert between 2014 and 2019 in the ITV soap - agreed to return as a one-off treat for fans as ex-husband Aaron Dingle prepares to marry Robert ' s killer brother John Sugden.
ITV pulled the episode from its streaming service ITVX ahead of its usual 7am broadcast in an effort to maintain the surprise for fans.
Which Sugden brother will Aaron choose to be with?

Emmerdale star confirms return for popular character and 'big' scenes ahead

Emmerdale's April Windsor actress Amelia Flanagan told The Mirror at the British Soap Awards all about a return to the ITV soap, which had been announced by bosses a while back One Emmerdale favourite's return to the show could be imminent, with Amelia Flanagan who plays April Windsor spilling all. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the actress, who won the award for Best Young Performer at this year's event, finally spoke out about the big news that a comeback was on the cards. The return had been announced by boss Laura Shaw months ago, but no details were given and no date was revealed either. ‌ April star Amelia has spoken for the first time about the looming return of Dylan Penders, played by actor Fred Kettle. The character debuted earlier this year as part of the teen's huge storyline that saw her living on the streets after running away from home. ‌ Dylan ended up following April to the village but after an overdose, he went to rehab and appeared to leave the show. The character proved a hit with fans though, and bosses decided to bring him back. It's now thought he will cause trouble for April and will feature in a big storyline in the village. He appeared to be filming already too which means he could be back onscreen within weeks. Speaking to us about the return for the first some, Amelia shared she was thrilled and was excited to explore Dylan and April further. She also teased there was some "big" stuff ahead, while revealing all on growing up on the soap after more than 11 years in the role. Amelia told us: "April has had an incredibly tough year with what she has been through, with the pregnancy and the homelessness storyline. April and Dylan didn't leave things on the best terms, but I think what is important now is that he's back. "Who knows what will happen. It will be great to explore that relationship further, I think fans want to see that which is great." Viewers have seen April having a tough time recently, struggling to adjust to life back in the village after the heartbreaking stillbirth if her daughter. ‌ Her and her dad Marlon Dingle have been at each other's throats for months, with Marlon struggling to get through to her and April trying to find her way. But there's positive scenes ahead, with "big" storylines teased too. Amelia told us: "I think hopefully the future is looking bright for all of them. They have been through so much with recent events. She's been dealt a hard hand in life in the last year or so, and we're gonna see more of April's journey. ‌ "She has been in the village for a long time now. She's been growing as a person and it's an incredible thing to explore with the show. I am excited for the bigger storylines to stick my teeth into." On her time on the show, she added: "I've been on the show for 11 and a half years now. It's been a long time. With April's journey, so much has happened, it's important to remember what has led her to be the way she is now, as far back as Donna's death. I think it's brilliant exploring new things." Amelia also praised her co-star Mike Parr, who plays Ross Barton, for his support towards her. She said: "Ross is like a big brother to April and it's very true to real life. I always say Mike is like a big brother. I love him to pieces, he's incredible and we have the best time together. Hopefully we see more of them onscreen." Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.

Tyson Fury horses around with his family as he takes delivery of traditional gypsy caravan - while thousands of travellers arrive at Appleby Horse Fair

Tyson Fury has accepted the delivery of a new traditional gypsy caravan as he shared footage of himself 'horsing around' with his family. The boxing champ posted a clip of the red, green and gold carriage on his Instagram story last night - sparking further excitement he might be on his way to Appleby Horse Fair. It comes after Fury, 36, yesterday posted a video of himself riding a horse and trap. While it was thought he may be travelling to Appleby, Fury later confirmed he had just been taking a ride around Knutsford, Cheshire, for scenes filmed for his Netflix show. Meanwhile in another social media clip, Fury shared footage of him pulling his son along in a beautifully decorated horse trailer. His son can be heard yelling: 'Giddy up horsey!' While Fury growls back: 'You don't need a horse, you've got me.' Up to 10,000 travellers and 30,000 visitors have been arriving in Appleby-in-Westmorland this week for the annual horse fair. The picturesque town has a population of 3,000 for 51 weeks of the year - but this all changes in the first week of June as a result of the event which dates from 1775. One traveller caused controversy by taking her pony to the 'chippy' with her on Thursday evening. The grey and white horse was spotted queuing patiently at the counter of Appleby's Riverside Fish and Chips. One local said: 'It's bad enough that they're galloping up and down the high street, but surely they don't have to go into takeaways with their owners.' Two years ago drinkers watched in bewilderment as a pony was trotted through the Crown and Cushion pub in the town. The pony's visit to the bar, thought to be to show it off for sale, was captured on CCTV. Meanwhile Scarlett Tipton, 17, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, was seen putting her pony Duchess through her paces on the streets of the town. She said: 'I love coming to Appleby, I'm here every year with my family. Duchess is loving the flashing lane this year, it's been great fun. I just wish the rain would stop.' MailOnline also spoke to fortune teller Melvina Smith on Thursday, who has been attending Appleby for 30 years. She said: 'The fair has changed so much over the years. It used to be a calm place where you could come to relax. A woman with her horse in The River Eden for the Appleby Horse Fair 'These days it's so much busier and it's sad that there's so much trouble now. You see a lot of bad behaviour, which is mostly down to drink.' Ms Smith, from Blackpool, Lancashire, bills herself as a 'true born gypsy' who reads palms and tells fortunes. She added: 'My mother and her mother before her had the gift and it's been passed down to me.' Travellers have also been washing their horses in the River Eden as part of a long-held tradition to prepare them for sale and to cool them off. However, some have also been accused of smashing up a cricket pavilion, racing carriages along village streets, threatening locals with a penknife and fouling footpaths with human excrement. A special police task force was also dealing with reports of burglary, criminal damage, racist abuse, knife crime. Cumbria Police said last Sunday that almost 30 arrests had been made in the Eden and South Lakes area as part of their pre-fair policing operation. Meanwhile, local sporting venue, Kirkby Lonsdale Cricket club, also saw its wooden pavilion smashed up. Cumbria Police said that three 10-year-old boys were arrested over the attack as part of the wider Appleby Fair policing operation. There were also problems at Woodclose Park caravan site where police investigated reports of criminal damage and the racial abuse of a security guard. It was reported that a group of traveller children had been abusive to staff and when asked to leave the park's reception set off fire extinguishers. In another earlier incident, police detained and handcuffed two traveller children after a penknife was produced in front of a shocked local on a riverside path. One of the biggest concerns for locals is also the welfare of the thousands of horses driven to Appleby to be traded in the streets. Last year two horses died at Appleby with both deaths being put down to exhaustion and overworking. The RSPCA intervened in 438 cases in total. Local campaigners say stricter regulations need to be placed on the event with spot checks on animal passports. The Appleby Fair Communities Group said: 'There are no checks on horse passports, we know horses are traded but the authorities never spot check passports. We know horses are moved, but with no check on passports ever. '

Soap awards' most scandalous moments…from star sacked over backstage brawl to Danny Dyer's beef with Phillip Schofield

An Emmerdale star was sacked after making a shocking threat towards a fellow actor DING GONGS Soap awards' most scandalous moments…from star sacked over backstage brawl to Danny Dyer's beef with Phillip Schofield IT'S hardly surprising that a room full of soap actors generates its fair share of drama - and this year's British Soap Awards did not disappoint. There were audible gasps from the audience when EastEnders star Patsy Palmer took to the stage after receiving the Best Comedy Performance gong for her role as Bianca Jackson. 12 Patsy Palmer went on a bizarre tangent about vaginas during her acceptance speech Credit: Shutterstock Editorial After thanking people for voting for her, the actress, 53, went on a bizarre tangent about women's privates. She told the crowd: "I'm glad I was there for the 40th [anniversary of EastEnders] because that was really where we celebrated the woman's vagina. "I think vaginas have always been funny." There was reportedly more, but ITV deemed it too explicit for broadcast and cut it down - though the stunned expressions of her co-stars in the audience suggested viewers missed a treat. A source said: 'It was so bizarre. One minute she's doing a pretty normal acceptance speech and the next she's launched into her own vagina monologue. 'And it just kept going and going. It was pretty odd.' That wasn't the only drama on the night - as a bomb threat later sparked an emergency evacuation at the show's after party. Pictures showed cops arriving at London's Hackney Town Hall, where the glitzy bash was held, just before 1am, with stars spotted streaming out of the venue in their finery. A source told The Sun: "It was surreal. One minute we were celebrating, the next we were out on the pavement wondering what was going on." Here we take a look at previous soap awards which ended up with dramas of their own - from boozy brawls worthy of Albert Square to worse-for-wear celebs being turned away at the door. Asan, 31, began taunting the Hollyoaks' hardman, aiming a 'sarcastic jibe" at him. In a scene resembling a punch-up at The Woolpack, Jamie, 50, went for the Dales star and cast members had to pull them apart. Asan was allegedly heard threatening to knife Jamie, and a clip of the bust up shows him scream: 'Do you think you are a f*****g big man? I'm going to f*****g kill you." He was thrown out of the bash and sacked from his role as Ellis in the show over the scuffle. Ender Bender 12 Jessie in the taxi with a pal before she arrived Before the 2018 British Soap Awards, Jessie Wallace indulged in a sport of pre-loading - and never even made it on to the red carpet. The EastEnders star - who plays Kat Slater - allegedly started boozing hours before the ceremony and posted a drunken picture in a taxi, at 3.47pm, with the caption: "Off to the awards we go." But, when she carried on drinking at the bar in the venue, and refused to take her seat, EastEnders bosses booked her a cab home at 7pm. Jessie, now 53, was said to be "furious" at being sent away. 'Self harm' controversy 12 Jacqueline was seen talking to Lacey Turner When Hollyoaks landed a Best Storyline gong at the 2018 British Soap Awards, viewers spotted Jacqueline Jossa making an ill-advised comment to fellow EastEnder Lacey Turner. She found herself at the centre of a row after allegedly sniping: "I think they all self-harm on that show." The EastEnders star, 32, was forced clarify her comment, saying she was referring to the winning storyline. She posted a comment reading: "Just to clear things up, Lacey asked me what the storyline was, as we couldn't hear. I answered with, 'I'm not actually sure, I think they all self-harmed on the show'." She added: "I haven't watched the show recently so don't actually know, but always love it and wasn't discrediting. "I know that self-harm isn't a joke, obviously, and love any soap that tackles hard stories. It's been taken out of context!" Trouble and strife 12 Jacqueline and Dan were said to have rowed at the party Credit: Greg Brennan Jacqueline was in a fresh drama the following year, when she appeared to have a bust up with hubby Dan Osborne at the National Television Awards (NTAs) after accusing him of flirting. A source told the Mirror the EastEnders actress burst into tears after finding Dan, 33, flirting with a group of women at the afterparty, telling him: "I want to go NOW." Dan was reportedly keen to stay, leading to a heated exchange between the couple, who have two girls - Ella, 10, and Mia, six. The source said: "It was awkward because everyone was having fun and they weren't hiding their fight from those around them.' Fix claims 12 ITV were accused of foul play over the win Credit: Getty BBC bosses were left fuming when Coronation Street won the Best Soap gong at the NTAs in 2010, claiming ITV had fixed the result. The gong was awarded shortly after a three-minute video celebrating the show's 50th birthday aired at the event, but rival EastEnders, which had turned 25, was given no such tribute. BBC insiders called the reel a "pretty blatant advert right in the middle of voting", adding: "It's as if they fixed it for Corrie." The independent body who oversees voting cleared the organisers, saying Corrie was already winning throughout the live voting and the video has no "material impact". Three years later ITV was accused of rigging the vote again by airing an hour-long Corrie before the show and axing Emmerdale. A BBC source moaned: "It seems ITV will stop at nothing to win NTAs. The stars tweet reminding people to vote – then they put a big Corrie episode on moments before the show starts. It is such an obvious tactic and not the first time they have played unfairly when it comes to the NTAs." An ITV source responded: "These claims of a fix are just sour grapes. The best soap won and our ratings are better than EastEnders, too." Ouch! Dyer gag 12 Danny Dyer had a stand off with the presenter Making EastEnders hardman Danny Dyer a butt of the joke didn't pan out well for Phillip Schofield. The pair clashed for two years running at the British Soap Awards, with the host admitting Danny was "scaring the life out of him". In 2018, in what may have been a planned stunt, Danny got irritated at the host repeatedly asking if he was "alright". He eventually stood and squared up to Phillip, barking: "What, you want to make one with me?" Phil joked: "Leave it you, back off. Sit down I'm in charge here mate." The following year Danny sat stoney-faced as Phillip made a gag about him being a fan of "trim down South" - in reference to Corrie's Trim Up North barber shop. The actor failed to respond and turned to the person sitting next to him, ignoring Phil, who laughed awkwardly. Host controversy 12 Phillip Schofield pulled out of hosting the British Soap Awards this year Credit: Rex Speaking of Phillip Schofield, he threw the awards into chaos in 2023 when he was forced to withdraw from hosting duties, following revelations of an affair with a much younger runner that he had concealed from ITV bosses. Despite singer Jane McDonald stepping in to present the show at the last minute, protestors gathered outside the The Lowry in Salford. Along with the soap fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols, people were holding placards with photographs of Schofield and his former This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby. Bright night 12 Kellie British had a snooze in the cab Credit: James Curley Kellie Bright looked like she'd had a fabulous night as she left the Inside Soap Awards in 2017. The 48-year-old actress - who plays landlady Linda Carter - was pictured having a snooze in the taxi home. She'd already got in a spot of bother with screen hubby Danny Dyer, 47, after losing their Best Soap Partnership gong at the afterparty. Hollyoaks vs Hollywood 12 Eddie Redmayne said Hollyoaks actors behaved badly Credit: Paul Rogers - The Times Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, 43, once worked as a waiter at the British Soap Awards and says he was humiliated by the Hollyoaks cast - whom he dubbed "b*****ds". He told Glamour magazine: "They feed all these soap stars with alcohol and then put them in the studio for the awards, so they're more rowdy and it makes for better television. "So, as a waiter, I had to stand there with a tray waiting for them to put their empties on before going in. "I remember this whole group of actors from Hollyoaks piling on with loads of champagne glasses and it being full, and one of them saying, 'Guys, guys, watch this! I'm going to put one more on, I'm going to put one more on...' "And I was thinking, 'No, please don't put another...' and them smashing everywhere. All these Hollyoaks actors were in hysterics and I was like, 'You b*****ds!'" Tumble time 12 Jennifer fell foul of towering heels Credit: Flynet Pictures Hollyoaks' Jennifer Metcalfe was less than steady on her feet when she left the 2017 Inside Soap Awards. The Mercedes McQueen star, 41, stumbled out of the glitzy bash and had to be helped to the car as she almost took a tumble. Those towering heels may have been the culprit.
