Tariff Havoc Is Forecasted To Create A Global Supply Chain Collapse

Everstream Analytics shared some data and insights from Mirko Woitzik, their Head of Risk Intelligence, with me. Everstream is a leader in supply chain risk management.
It is important to understand how supply chain risk management solutions work to understand whether Mr. Woritzik is just crying 'Wolf' when he warns that global supply chains are on the edge of collapse.
SCRM is a network-based solution. SCRM solutions are the most interesting application of AI and Big Data in the supply chain realm. Users are connected to real-time alerts generated by a vast number of online publications, social media feeds, and third-party purchased data. In 2025, Everstream reported that it had collected over 3 trillion data points over the last 10 years and processed 8 million sources daily. The numbers would be much larger today.
Examples of third-party data would include weather forecasts, sustainability ratings, or credit reports on a company's financial viability. One of the players in this market. AI is used to help surface the alerts and make sure they are valid.
This data needs to be curated. The curation is created by carefully mapping a customer's supply chain. For example, a manufacturer might have a supplier in Hanoi from which they purchase key components. Those components get trucked by the Vietnamese Railways, loaded, and then transported to the Haiphong port, where a freight forwarder ensures the container is loaded on an Ocean carrier. The goods are then shipped to the Port of Long Beach, unloaded, and then trucked to a factory in Fresno.
Every step in that digital twin of the supply chain has search terms associated with it. The names of the suppliers, carriers, and logistics service providers become search terms. Those search terms are paired with terms signaling a problem – those terms might be 'bankruptcy,' 'plant fire', 'port explosion,' 'strike', and many, many other terms. So, the term 'Haiphong', when combined in an article with the phrase 'port fire', would generate an alert. And because human language lacks sufficient precision, artificial intelligence is used to help generate fewer false positive alerts over time. So, AI learns over time that the term 'go belly up' can mean bankruptcy.
When this alert data is aggregated, an understanding of critical industries' end-to-end supply chains results. This allows for robust predictive analytics surrounding the larger macroeconomic environment. In short, Everstream has high-quality data on which they can base their dire forecast of coming supply chain turmoil.
The tariff situation in the U.S. continues to evolve. A panel of federal judges at a specialized court focused on customs and trade issues – the Court of International Trade - blocked most of the Trump administration's tariffs Wednesday, ruling that the president had exceeded his authority in imposing the sweeping levies on goods imported from around the world. The U.S. Court of Appeals then granted the administration's request, pausing the trade court's decision until the matter can be adjudicated by the appeals court. This means Trump's tariffs can continue for now.
Meanwhile, China's approach has been more consistent. While other nations' tariffs are negotiable, China realizes that they are likely to eventually be subject to much higher U.S. tariffs than the rest of the world. China has responded with export controls.
After President Donald Trump unveiled his 'reciprocal' tariffs on 'Liberation Day,' China retaliated with duties and export controls on rare earth minerals. These minerals are critical to the automotive, aerospace, tech, wind turbine, and defense sectors. Then, in the middle of May, those tariffs were paused, and China and the U.S. agreed to roll back their retaliatory levies to lower levels. China also agreed to roll back some of the non-tariff measures it implemented in retaliation against U.S. tariffs. It was hoped that this would include restrictions on exports of rare earth metals. For firms headquartered in the U.S., that has not occurred.
The Chinese export controls on rare earths, imposed in April 2025, are starting to ripple through global supply chains. Some of these disruptions are becoming public. The New York Times reported that Ford temporarily closed a factory in Chicago that makes Ford Explorer sports utilities because one of their suppliers ran out of these magnets. 'In most new cars, the magnets are used in dozens of electric motors that operate brake and steering systems, fuel injectors, and even power seats.' Close to 90% of rare earth metals are produced in China.
China granted the first rare earth magnet export permits in mid-May, but it remains unclear for what quantities and for which customers. However, U.S. companies appear to be the primary targets. European and Asian companies seeking licenses from China appear to be having better success in getting these licenses.
Everstream reports that in the next 3 weeks, we will see further impacts in the semiconductor and automotive industries. European semiconductor makers face severe shortages of rare earths. Production lines could grind to a halt as early as June 2025.
Car plants and suppliers in Europe, the U.S., and Japan typically hold a two to three months' stockpile of material. This is being quickly depleted. Indian car and motorcycle manufacturers, including Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, and Maruti Suzuki, are running out of supply this week, and production could shut down as early as the end of May. U.S. and European car makers face the same thing. Automakers will likely respond by prioritizing high-margin vehicle production while halting other factory lines.
'This is reminiscent,' Everstream says, 'of the early days of the global semiconductor shortage that started to hit automotive supply chains first in late 2020 before spreading to most other manufacturing industries reliant on the critical components.' At the time Volkswagen was the first automaker to warn of a global chip shortage. It then became clear this was more than a one-company problem. The Ford Explorer news is a similar early indicator of a greater problem.
While stoppages due to difficulties getting rare earth materials are new, tariffs have disrupted the auto industry due to falling demand for pricier products. But in news the Trump administration welcomes, they have also led to plans to bring more production back to the United States.
Nevertheless, shortages of rare earth materials, coming on top of the Auto industry's need to rejigger global supply chains, makes responding to this new supply chain crisis even more difficult.
BMW announced a temporary halt to Electric Vehicle production in the U.S. in May. The automaker produces EVs in Germany rather than in its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. They cited a murky tariff environment as the reason for the shutdown. This decision froze output for four electric models despite a 26% surge in EV sales in the first quarter of 2025. BMW also terminated 180 employees at a factory in Oxford in the U.K. BMW's strongest sellers in the U.S. are built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The automaker is considering adding extra shifts there to increase U.S. production.
Mercedes-Benz said they plan to shift high-volume model production to Alabama, U.S. This will occur by late 2027. They may end imports of lower-priced models to the U.S.
Volkswagen has suspended shipping cars assembled in Mexico to the U.S. This resulted from the enforcement of 25% tariffs on vehicle imports on April 3. The company suspended rail shipments of autos from Mexico to the U.S. The German carmaker is also holding all vehicles delivered after April 3 at US ports of entry. This allows them to release vehicles to dealers when tariffs go down, re-export the vehicles, or charge more for the vehicles. The company will likely introduce an 'import fee' on affected vehicles after May. Volkswagen Group has claimed it will bring Audi production to the U.S. by 2027.
Executives from all three of these German automakers are set to meet with the U.S. Department of Commerce to see if they can come to a mutually beneficial deal. While all three manufacturers operate factories within the U.S., the Trump administration has deemed output from these plants as insufficient investment. As a result, impending discussions will hinge on each automaker's willingness to continue to expand U.S. production.
Among U.S. automakers, the news from General Motors is particularly bleak. The company laid off 750 workers at its Oshawa Assembly Plant in Canada and plans to reduce worker hours by moving from 3 shifts to two. This will begin in June. GM does plan to increase production at its plant in Fort Wayne, U.S.
Other European companies include Stellantis and Volvo. But because Stellantis was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group in 2021, the company has a significant manufacturing presence in North America. Stellantis had layoffs at their Windsor Assembly Plant in Canada from April 7 to April 21 and moved to a rotating shift schedule that began in May and will last through at least August. They also had temporary layoffs at their Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico for the entire month of April. This led to temporary layoffs at plants in the U.S. due to the production halts in Canada and Mexico.
Volvo has been hit hard. They had layoffs of 800 employees at three facilities in the U.S. that began in May and will extend to at least July. They are phasing out the China-made S90 model after 2025. And they announced a plan to cut 3,000 jobs in Sweden and other countries. They announced $1.87 billion in cost cuts and withdrew earnings forecast for the next two years.
The Japanese car makers include Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota. Honda has shifted Civic Hybrid production from Japan to Indiana.
Mazda has halted production of the CX-50 model for the Canadian market at the plant in Alabama, U.S. This halt began on May 12th. The company is withholding its annual profit guidance. Mitsubishi has suspended all vehicle deliveries to U.S. dealerships.
Nissan has indefinitely suspended Mexico production of the QX50 and QX55 models for U.S. market. They have reduced production of Rogue SUV at their Kyushu Plant in Japan. This began in May and will be continued through July. They are also withholding profit guidance in their calls with financial analysts due to the financial uncertainty kicked up by the tariff turmoil.

Another coaching change in Washington Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Washington Spirit have changed coaches. Two-time UEFA Champions League-winning coach Jonatan Giráldez is headed to OL Lyonnes, another club under owner Michele Kang's umbrella. Let's start with the news. I've covered the Spirit in some capacity since 2015. If I had a nickel for every coaching change I've seen in that decade, I'd have nine. NINE! Sure, it's not enough to afford the new Inciardi art prints the team sells on game day, but that's still a lot of change for one team. Those changes include coaches dismissed for misconduct, interims, a single-game stint by Angela Salem in the ill-fated 2022 season and now the give-and-go situation happening with Giráldez and González. Spirit forward Trinity Rodman, one of the faces of NWSL, has yet to have a single coach for more than one season at her club. When I asked her at the end of last year how the team was able to get to two NWSL championships (winning one), she took an approach à la Bane's 'I was born in it' comment in 'The Dark Knight Rises': 'It's almost scarier when it's smooth sailing,' she said. Advertisement What to expect from González González is no stranger to Washington. In fact, he might be one of the most consistent head coaches in the last few years, even if some of that time was spent as both an interim and assistant coach. González led Washington through preseason last year and to a 10-1-4 record through the first fifteen games. He helped the team to some of its best expected goal stats since 2021. (He did so with a healthy roster, something the Spirit haven't had recently.) During the Olympic break last year, Giráldez took over. He built on González's strong start to lead the Spirit to the 2024 NWSL Championship, which they lost 1-0 to the Orlando Pride. Now, a year later, the reverse will happen. The Spirit have dealt with a spate of injuries this season, headlined by Rodman, but are currently fourth in the NWSL table with a record of 6-1-3, five points behind No. 1 Kansas City Current. González will have the international break, starting June 23, to reset with the team. However, the organization saw his familiarity with the players as a positive. Kang said González 'knows the team and has earned this organization's trust.' Is this a bad thing? Multi-club models have long been seen as corporate cash grabs at best and sportswashing at worst (on the men's side). Kang has been well aware of that perception since she first looked to create Kynisca Sports International, a multi-team global women's soccer organization, by purchasing OL Lyonnes in 2023. She later purchased the only independently owned team in England's second tier of women's soccer, and her investment helped the team get promoted to the WSL. The businesswoman told Forbes last year that the multi-club model is a 'necessity' in the women's game, especially when it comes to resource sharing. However, Kang has made it clear that players don't fall into that category. Advertisement Despite the awkward optics here, González has a strong track record as Washington's coach, so Kang seems to be keeping up her promise not to sacrifice the good of one team for the other. And she isn't the only one expanding, as Kansas City Current owners Angie and Chris Long showed last week with their investment in Danish club HB Koge. Whether women's soccer is paving a new way forward or adopting the bad habits from the men's side will take time to become clear. Hayes' team 'on track' for June deadline Head coach Emma Hayes said last week that the USWNT is still 'on track' to meet her June deadline for establishing a core group of players that will lead the U.S. in World Cup qualifying next year. She's even found the space to start developing the under-23 group the way she hoped she could at the start of the year (more on that in a sec). Despite not having Triple Espresso (Rodman, Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson), this team isn't totally without its caffeine. Sam Coffey scored her second U.S. goal with a wonder strike in the team's 3-0 win over China on Saturday. Pick out that corner, Sam 🔥#USWNT x @VW — U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) May 31, 2025 Coffey — who leads with devotion, as she recently told Tamerra — is part of a midfield that's finally jelling, alongside Lindsey Heaps and Lily Yohannes. The team also has its 'security blanket' back with the return of Naomi Girma. A fun aside: Coffey's game-worn jersey from the match, along with several other U.S. players' jerseys, were up for auction during the game (and there's still time to bid). Coffey's jersey is currently a great value pick for a goal scorer. Keep an eye out for the youths Hayes has been as adamant about developing this younger national team as she has been about narrowing down her group for 2027 World Cup qualifying. She sees the two projects as interdependent. That's why players like Jaedyn Shaw (20 years old), Korbin Albert (21) and Mia Fishel (24), who have senior caps (and in Shaw and Albert's case, Olympic gold medals), were named to this camp. This is your reminder to start paying attention to the U-23s, made up almost entirely of professional players, during this camp. They played in two very fun (and refreshingly well-attended!) matches against Germany near Stuttgart on Friday and again today. The teams split results, each side claiming a dramatic 2-1 victory sealed in the final minutes. Ironically, in the May 30 match, it was Evelyn Shores — the only collegiate player on the roster — who netted the go-ahead in the dying seconds of stoppage time to give the U.S. the win. Today, in the second fixture, Albert converted a penalty drawn by the Portland Thorns' Caiya Hanks to get the U.S. on the board. But this time, German midfielder Tuana Mahmoud was the national hero with a soaring strike that U.S. and Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz managed to only get a few fingers on. Props to the German Football Federation for streaming both matches on YouTube. — Tamerra 📺 USWNT vs. Jamaica Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on TNT, Max and Peacock The U.S. closes this window with a friendly against Jamaica at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Mo. The game was originally scheduled to be a second against China but had to be changed due to a scheduling conflict for the Chinese. 📺 Spain vs. England Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET streaming on Fubo UEFA Nations League continues tomorrow with the final round of matches before this summer's European Championship in Switzerland. And after an emphatic 6-0 win over Portugal to silence the Mary Earps chatter from the public, England take on Spain for a final test before Sarina Wiegman unveils the squad she's taking to the Euros. Never too late: USWNT midfielder Lo'eau LaBonta became the oldest player to debut for the U.S. women when the 32-year-old took the field in place of the 17-year-old Yohannes on Saturday. Meg Linehan caught up with the KC captain last week to discuss her first call-up. Teaming up: The Mexican Football Federation will join the U.S. as co-host for the 2031 Women's World Cup, a federation spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. The two nations originally went in on a 2027 bid before backing out. Brazil will host that year's tournament. Tears, anger, end of hope: Blackburn Rovers' senior Women's team have been demoted from the Women's Super League 2 after the club decided against meeting the required licensing criteria to retain their tier-two status, plunging the women's set-up into an uncertain future. NEW YORK -- With many travelers currently in wait-and-see mode, CoStar and Tourism Economics downgraded their U.S. hotel forecast during the NYU International Hospitality Investment Forum here on Monday. They are now forecasting a 1% increase in 2025 revenue per available room (RevPAR), down from 1.8%. For 2026, U.S. RevPAR is now projected to increase 1.5%, down from a previously forecasted 2.1%. Average daily rate is expected to grow 1.3% in 2025; zero growth is expected for hotel occupancy at 62.8%. Tariff concern is a factor, said Amanda Hite, president of hotel data specialist STR, a CoStar subsidiary. "The real problem here is the tariff situation," Hite said. "We've got less capital expenditures from business this year than what we had anticipated, which directly means less travel. Businesses are just waiting to see what's going to happen with the economy." Hotel industry bifurcation has intensified, with luxury hotels expected to achieve 3.4% RevPAR growth and upper-upscale hotels a 1.8% bump, fueled in part by slight occupancy increases. Upscale hotels are projected for 0.5% RevPAR growth, while midscale and economy hotels are expected to record 0.8% and 0.7% decreases, respectively. Consumers are more price-sensitive and business travel has stalled, Hite said. She added that shortened booking windows are creating significant challenges. July and August occupancy on the books is "very far behind" last year she said, adding that the trend likely reflects consumers' wait-and-see outlook amid economic uncertainty. "Until consumer confidence improves, demand is going to remain softer -- especially in the middle and lower price tiers," Hite said. The consumer has withstood a lot Still, Deutsche Bank chief U.S. economist Matthew Luzzetti believes the U.S. will avoid a recession. Luzzetti addressed the conference audience on Monday, saying consumers have weathered "a number of historic shocks" over the past three years. He cited the Federal Reserve's largest tightening cycle in 40 years to fight inflation, the 2023 banking crisis and, most recently, an "unprecedented trade war." "Is the tariff shock something that finally breaks the consumer?" Luzzetti said. "I'm going to argue no, that the aggregate consumer fundamentals are strong enough." He said disposable-income growth for U.S. households is "the strongest it's been in a year" and has been accelerating, said Luzzetti. He added that household wealth-to-income ratios currently sit near record highs and that the personal savings rate has also been on the rise, providing consumers with "as much of a buffer as they've had over the past three to five years." Luzzetti also pointed to an "incredibly resilient" U.S. labor market as another tailwind, with unemployment at 4.2% and the economy adding around 150,000 to 200,000 jobs per month on average this year. He added that "not all households have access to record-high wealth relative to income." "If you are exposed to lower-income households and middle-income households, those balance sheets do not look as strong," he said, adding that delinquency rates have risen across credit cards, auto loans and student debt. Luzzetti cautioned that data related to consumer sentiment should be taken "with a grain of salt" because there's a disconnect between what Americans say about the economy versus how they spend. "There's been a massive breakdown between these two indicators over the past 10 years," he said, with consumer confidence indicators heavily polarized along political lines. "For the most part of the past four years, consumers have indicated we're in a recession, which obviously has not been the case," said Luzzetti.
