NDRF to launch annual mountaineering program for enhanced disaster preparedness
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Piyush Anand, announced the launch of an annual mountaineering program to strengthen the preparedness of NDRF teams in hilly and mountainous regions, where the frequency of natural disasters has increased. The announcement came at a crucial time when events such as the Char Dham Yatra and Amarnath Yatra are about to start. He assured that his team is ready in the face of any tragedy.
Speaking to ANI, Anand stated, 'We have decided to launch a mountaineering program each year. The primary reason for this is that natural disaster incidents have increased in the mountainous and hilly states of India. And looking after that, NDRF teams must be well prepared and ready for every situation.'
Highlighting the importance of understanding geography and circumstances in such mountains and hilly regions, Anand added, 'This is our third expedition, so our team will be well prepared for any situation. For example, if we have to launch a rescue operation at high altitude with the help of these kinds of expeditions, we will be better prepared for that and achieve success.'
He also emphasised the growing impact of disasters in hilly areas and mentioned that NDRF, as a disaster response force, has already pre-deployed teams accordingly. On the suggestions made by the Home Minister, the NDRF has also begun debriefing and analysing its rescue operations to improve future responses. 'Prime Minister and Home Minister have given a target of zero casualties in natural disasters, and we are working on this approach,' he said.
Anand further stated that efforts are underway to build the capacity of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, with over 5,000 people trained in the past three years. Technical resources for disaster response have been listed on the NDRF website for SDRF teams to access and utilise during rescue operations. Additionally, 25 disaster management training videos in 11 different languages have been made available on the website.
He further informed that 16 NDRF battalions are currently deployed across various states. In anticipation of the upcoming flood season, 97 teams have been deployed to 69 locations nationwide. Pre-deployment of NDRF teams has also been carried out because of potential disasters like floods and landslides. For major events such as the Char Dham Yatra and Amarnath Yatra, teams have been pre-positioned and are in regular coordination with local authorities. (ANI)

We had conducted four mock drills along with the District Administration here.' The yatra drew lakhs of devotees, many of whom had travelled from different parts of the country and abroad to to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple. Puri (Odisha) [India], June 27 (ANI): A large number of devotees gathered at the Jagannath temple in Puri as the grand annual Rath Yatra festival began on Friday morning. People from across the country arrived to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple. Speaking to ANI, Pooja Anand, a devotee from Mumbai, shared her emotions while witnessing the yatra for the first time. 'I have come from Mumbai. It is an out-of-this-world experience. I have been a devotee for 20 years, but this is my first time here. It is a divine experience. I want to pull the chariot. This is one day of the year when the Lord comes out of his abode and blesses the 'jagat', the universe. Everyone should come here and seek blessings. The weather here is very pleasant. It rained all night,' she told. Bandita Patra from Cuttack, part of the Shilp Kala Niketan group, performed a devotional dance and described the moment as the fulfilment of a long-standing family vow. 'This was our dream, this is the group's dream of thirty-nine years and this is my mother's dream of twenty-seven years. I came here today to dance. And by the grace of God, this has become possible.' She dedicated her dance to Lord Jagannath, adding, 'Just do good to everyone and keep everyone happy. ‘I walked home crying that night': Mocked and denied rides, Mangaluru transwoman buys autos, offers free rides to elderly and pregnant; works as gym trainer by day
Ani Mangaluru, a transgender woman, empowers others as a gym trainer and provides free autorickshaw rides to pregnant women and elderly transgender individuals in Mangaluru. Overcoming poverty and discrimination, she bought four autorickshaws after experiencing rejection herself. Ani Mangaluru, a transgender woman and a personal gym trainer, helps her clients build strength and confidence. Off the weights, she is a proud owner of four autorickshaws that run in Deralakatte and Kuttar areas of Mangaluru. Her autos offer free rides to pregnant women and elderly transgender people, a gesture born from her own experience of being denied transport after a day of begging. Born as Ajibabu in a Hiredinni camp in Maski, Raichur, and raised in a family of four children, poverty was a constant companion. Despite financial struggles, Ajibabu was determined to study. "Though I was born a boy, my mannerisms were always feminine. That made things difficult," she said. She graduated and earned a govt seat for in Mangaluru. She travelled to Mangaluru for higher education, but her transition in the city was personal. "I began to feel strongly that I was a woman. People laughed, mocked and bullied me," she recalled. Unable to cope, she dropped out of college in her second year and moved to Bengaluru, where she joined the transgender community. However, life did not get easier. Finding rental houses is still a nightmare. Many of us still survive through begging or sex work." One day, after a long day of begging, Ani faced repeated rejections from autorickshaw drivers. "I walked home crying. That night, I thought, if this is how I am treated, what about elderly transgenders or pregnant women?" She is passionate about acting and has acted in Kannada film Shivaleela. She is also a line producer. Despite actively seeking roles through social media ads, opportunities are rare. "We are often denied just because we are transpersons." Regarding her work as gym trainer, she said: "I have always been passionate about fitness and determined to succeed. However, there again it was challenging to find the right opportunity. I started going to a gym to learn and gradually teach proper exercise techniques."
