Waterman injured as Crows third-term ambush torches Eagles

Perth Now25-05-2025

A shoulder injury to star forward Jake Waterman has rubbed salt into Waalitj Marawar's (West Coast's) wounds in a heavy 66-point defeat to Kuwarna (Adelaide) at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Waterman had been one of the Eagles' best with three goals but the All-Australian forward was taken from the field holding his right shoulder after finding himself in the middle of a massive collision early in the final quarter.
It came after the Eagles were ambushed by a ruthless Crows in the third term, the home side kicking seven goals to one to shake off the brave visitors and secure a 19.14 (128) to 8.14 (62) victory.
The Eagles went into the game having lost their past eight games at the iconic South Australian venue, including a 99-point defeat 264 days prior.
For more than a half of footy, Andrew McQualter's men gave the Crows a fight but ultimately the home side were able to make the scoreboard reflect the gap in class between the two outfits.
Crows captain Jordan Dawson lifted his game in the third term when Kuwarna put the Eagles to the sword, finishing with 27 disposals, eight clearances, two goals and 11 inside 50s.
Sam Berry relished his rare exposure to full midfield minutes with 26 disposals, four clearances and a goal, while prized recruit James Peatling (16 disposals and two goals) glided across the ground in an eye-catching performance.
West Coast's day was epitomised by defender Reuben Ginbey who was incredibly brave – including taking an amazing mark back with the flight – but butchered the footy when given the chance. Their veterans who had been so staunch in the past fortnight looked tired as the toll of a gruelling season begins to take its toll already.
The Eagles' undersized defence would've breathed a sigh of relief when the Crows withdrew former skipper Taylor Walker before the bounce.
And then the reality of the monumental task ahead of them would've set in when Riley Thilthorpe (two goals) out-positioned two Eagles defenders to kick the first goal.
Skill errors plagued the Eagles early at both ends of the ground as simple missed kicks left them exposed on the turnover and cost them early scoring opportunities.
Oscar Allen (two goals) would've been the most frustrated man in South Australia, with the Eagles' co-captain beating his opponent on several occasions only for his teammates to be unable to find him on the lead.
Promisingly, the visitors didn't let the mistakes discourage them and they maintained their strong pressure to create turnovers the other way and hit the scoreboard.
They could've been in front had they been cleaner going forward, with the Crows taking an incredible nine intercept marks in the first term alone.
And they didn't fix the issues at quarter time. Waalitj Marawar went from competitive to on top through the middle of the ground and it allowed them to dominate the territory battle.
While they had 18 inside 50s for the term, for much of the quarter it looked as if their only goal would come courtesy of a lucky bounce from Tyler Brockman, who was trying to find Allen but overcooked the kick.
At the other end Adelaide were efficient with their limited opportunities and held a 23-point lead when Thilthorpe kicked his second late in the term.
Waterman kept the Eagles within touch when he converted a long-range set shot after the half-time siren, but they could've been a lot closer had their midfield-forward connection been better.
The Crows was finally able to break the game open late in the third term, kicking five unanswered goals in a 13-minute ambush to blow the 17-point half-time lead out to 57 points at the last break.
Waterman's unfortunate injury seemed to suck the life out of the contest as Josh closed the door on a miracle comeback when he ran into an unguarded goalsquare to kick his fourth of his five majors.
Within 30 seconds the Eagles' day may have got worse with premiership defender Tom Cole limping from the ground with a potential ankle injury.

Dolphins destroy Dragons in record-breaking win

The Dolphins have rocketed into the top eight for the first time this year with a 56-6 demolition of St George Illawarra on what is officially known as Queensland Day. That could easily be rebranded Dolphins Day on the back of another scintillating display by halfback Isaiya Katoa. The Dolphins started the season 0-4 but head coach Kristian Woolf kept true to his systems and did not panic. The so-called 'Wayne Bennett curse' has been spooked into oblivion. The only downside for the Dolphins, now in seventh on the ladder, was a knee injury to forward Max Plath on his return from a foot issue. The opening 40 minutes on Friday night was a pure rugby league clinic as the home side rocketed to a 28-2 halftime lead at Suncorp Stadium. The second half was just as good. The forwards and backs were punishing in defence, halves Kodi Nikorima and Katoa combined in a masterclass and to a man the Dolphins played scintillating attacking rugby league. The diabolical Dragons simply had no answer. The Dolphins had their previous biggest winning margin over St George Illawarra in a 38-0 victory last year but this record breaker was another level, surpassing the 44 points they had notched on two previous occasions. When second-rower Connelly Lemuelu stormed over for his second try four minutes after the break Nikorima and Katoa had two try assists each. Fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow then put the nail in the Dragons' coffin for a runaway try in combination with centre Jake Averillo, who was brilliant with three try assists. Katoa landed a 40/20 and then laid on a try for winger Jamayne Isaako's second try. Dolphins hitman Felise Kaufusi set the scene early with a back slam on centre Valentine Holmes to dislodge the ball. From that moment the Dolphins dominated. The depth of the Dolphins' attacking line was a sight to behold and it was star centre Herbie Farnworth who crossed for his 50th career try in the 11th minute after a sweeping right to left play. Winger Jamayne Isaako added a second in the right corner after a mirror image play for a 10-2 lead. Katoa was pivotal in both by going deep into the line to create space. He then beat three men and Nikorima raced away to score. A towering bomb by Katoa was expertly snaffled by Lemuelu for a 22-2 lead. Dolphins winger Jack Bostock haunted opposite number Nathan Lawson, the former Australian rugby sevens Olympian. Bostock smashed Lawson in one huge hit and then leapt above him to score after a Nikorima bomb. The Dragons lost winger Christian Tuipulotu to a hamstring injury in the first half on his return from the same complaint while forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner left the field in the second half with shortness of breath.

‘No test?': AFL world unloads on Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko high shots

Brisbane Lions stars Lachie Neale and Dayne Zorko both suffered heavy head knocks in Friday night's clash with the Crows in Adelaide. James Peatling was swiftly reported for a sling tackle on two-time Brownlow medallist Neale, while Zorko slammed his head into the turf after a fair collision with Alex Neal-Bullen. Both premiership players appeared shaken up after the heavy contact on a wet night in Adelaide, but neither seemed to go for Head Injury Assessments, much to the surprise of those watching on. It is standard practice for players to undergo assessments on the sideline for any head-high shots, yet Neale and Zorko played on after doing their best to shake off the heavy contact and clear their own heads. Watch Lachie Neale's heavy contact in the video player above 'No way to protect himself there Lachie Neale,' Anthony Hudson said on Fox Footy after Neale was tackles. Garry Lyon added: 'Dangerous tackle being paid here against Peatling, who has the job on Lachie Neale. 'Do they take him off and look at it or not? Probably doctors would be looking at that now.' Just minutes later, two-time All Australian Zorko became airborne after contact from Neal-Bullen and the back of his head met heavily with the pitch. 'He looks a bit sore Zorko, that was a great effort by Neal Bullen coming from the left of screen,' Crows great Mark Ricciuto said. 'Zorko hit his head as well but unfortunately just bad luck in the contest that one.' 'I think he's in trouble, he was reported by the umpire for that dumping tackle on Neale,' Fox Footy's Jon Ralph said at halftime. 'I think the extreme dumping motion there, as his head hits the ground, means he's likely to miss one week. 'It's excessive force, there's more than one action in a vulnerable position. They're the things (Match Review Officer) Michael Christian looks for.' Nathan Buckley and Jordan Lewis both agreed Peatling was in trouble. But the fact neither player appeared to get any treatment from club officials was curious to those watching on. Sports writer Ronny Lerner wrote: 'Surprising that Neale or Zorko haven't left the field yet for HIAs. They clearly clutched their heads after they hit the ground hard.' One fan replied: 'Agreed they either need a HIA or they're playing it up.' Another fan asked: 'Neale gonna get that checked out we reckon?' A fourth joked: 'Adelaide's game plan … give concussions.' A fifth stated: 'Wait, what … no concussion test for Neale? Just got his temporal lobe smashed into the ground enough that an infield report was made.' Another tweeted: 'So if Neale hit his head then why isn't he getting checked over?? Double standards for stars?' Many also felt 24-year-old Peatling, who started his career with GWS before moving to Adelaide, could prepare for some time on the sideline. 'That's a suspension. 2 actions, cya later. Neale better do a HIA too,' was one comment on X. 'Reported for rough conduct. Yeah. Fair enough. That's a bad tackle,' said another. 'RDO for James Peatling coming up,' wrote another. 'That's going to be a little holiday for Peatling,' was another comment. In a low scoring contest, the Lions kicked the only two goals of the first quarter before Adelaide fought back, with the visitors holding an eight-point lead at halftime.
