HighlightsAlibaba Group Holding Ltd. introduced Qwen VLo, an upgraded artificial intelligence model capable of generating images from text and modifying existing images, as part of its Qwen brand. The new Qwen VLo model features progressive generation technology, allowing users to observe the image creation process in real-time, enhancing user interaction and creativity. With a focus on artificial general intelligence, Alibaba aims to compete with other technology leaders in the rapidly evolving AI market, responding to innovations from companies like DeepSeek and OpenAI.
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
unveiled a new iteration of its artificial-intelligence technology that will make it easier for users to generate and modify images from texts and visuals, as the Chinese ecommerce giant continues its aggressive push into AI.
The Hangzhou-based company introduced
Qwen VLo
, part of a series of AI services under the company's Qwen brand. The new model is an upgrade from Qwen2.5-VL and is now able to generate text-to-image and image-to-image results. It also has a technology called progressive generation, meaning users can see the process as an image is created.
'This newly upgraded model not only 'understands' the world but also generates high-quality recreations based on that understanding,' the company said in a blog post. 'You can directly send a prompt like 'Generate a picture of a cute cat' to generate an image or upload an image of a cat and ask 'Add a cap on the cat's head' to modify an image.'
Best known for its ecommerce operations in China, Alibaba has been charging into AI and building standalone offerings around Qwen. In February, Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu went so far as to say the company's 'primary objective' is now
artificial general intelligence
, a goal in the industry to build AI systems with human-level intellectual capabilities.
With the new
Qwen multimodal model
, it's aiming to compete with a flurry of new visual interfaces in the market, including from OpenAI. It also faces aggressive domestic competition from the likes of DeepSeek.
After DeepSeek stunned the industry with a powerful model it said took just a few million dollars to build, China's technology leaders flooded the market with a rapid succession of low-cost AI services. Alibaba has rapidly updated its Qwen series, adding new capabilities to process text, pictures, audio and video — with the efficiency to run directly on phones and laptops. It unveiled a new version of its AI assistant Quark app in March.

‘Utterly insane and destructive': Elon Musk strongly reacts to latest Senate draft bill

Elon Musk has called the latest Senate draft bill that raises taxes on wind and solar projects 'utterly insane and destructive.' Sharing an X post, Musk wrote, "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country! Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future." Billionaire Elon Musk criticized the latest version of President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill released by the U.S. Senate, which potentially reopens the floodgate of controversy between the billionaire and the US President, which had seen a major escalation over the past few weeks. The post shared by Musk was of Jesse D. Jenkins, a Macro-energy systems engineering, optimization, and policy professor at Princeton Engineering, according to the X account. The post reads, 'The new Senate draft raises taxes on all wind and solar projects that haven't begun construction today unless they are placed in service by the end of 2027 and navigate complex, likely unworkable requirements to prove they don't use a drop of Chinese materials. After that, this bill ADDS A NEW tax on wind and solar projects that can't prove the same.' Trump and Musk have not been on great terms over the past few weeks and have taken their feud public. For the past few days, the rift appeared to have subsided, but the floodgates apparently have reopened, with Musk openly criticizing the Trump administration's bill that proposes the implementation of taxes on wind and solar projects that haven't begun construction yet.

Manimajra's 24x7 water supply project hits turbulence; MC internal report, Chandigarh BJP chief flag major flaws

1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: What was once hailed as a flagship initiative under the 'Viksit Bharat' vision is now under intense scrutiny. The ambitious 24x7 water supply pilot project in Manimajra, inaugurated with much fanfare by Union home minister Amit Shah in Aug 2024, has hit turbulent waters. Amid growing concerns and political pressure, Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria is set to convene a high-level meeting to dissect the project's faltering progress. The move comes in the wake of a strongly worded letter from Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra to the Union home minister, expressing alarm over the project's execution. Sources confirm that the ministry of home affairs has since forwarded the letter to the UT Administrator, prompting urgent administrative attention. The project, spearheaded by Chandigarh Smart City Limited and executed through a Rajasthan-based agency, was envisioned to revolutionize water supply in Manimajra — transitioning from intermittent to round-the-clock pressurized water delivery, complete with smart metering and automated control systems. But the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. A confidential internal report by the Engineering Department of the Municipal Corporation has laid bare a series of alarming discrepancies: No zone in Manimajra has achieved 24x7 pressurized water supply; pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and variable frequency drive (VFD) pumping systems remain non-operational; major lapses in the construction of underground reservoirs, pumping stations, and the rollout of the SCADA automation system; and much-touted smart water meters are yet to be fully deployed. The project was awarded through an e-tender at a staggering Rs 165.86 crore, split into capital expenditure (capex) — Rs 74.56 crore — and operational expenditure (OPEX) — Rs 91.29 crore. Despite the scale of investment, the outcomes have been underwhelming — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Malhotra has reportedly warned that the project's failure is damaging the BJP's image and undermining the Prime Minister's development agenda. What's Next? With the spotlight now firmly on the project, the upcoming meeting chaired by Kataria is expected to be a turning point. Malhotra's letter to Shah In a letter to Amit Shah, Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra said, "In August 2024, a project was inaugurated by you, in the presence of administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, chief secretary Rajeev Verma, and other dignitaries, for 24-hour water supply with proper pressure for all floors. The funds amounting to Rs 75 crore were allocated for the project under the smart city mission. The reality of this project clearly reflects that the whole project has collapsed, and nobody is held accountable and responsible for this wastage of Rs 75 crore. Sir, on one side, taxes are being imposed on the public, and on the other, Rs 75 crore have been wasted. Certainly, there are policy lapses or a lack of accountability in the system of administration of UT Chandigarh. The media reports are causing grave damage to our reputation in public at large and are also not in tune with our visionary Prime Minister's dream of VIKSIT BHARAT: 2047. Your good self is thus humbly requested to intervene in the matter and call for a detailed inquiry report on the same."

Sukhbir Badal dares Bhagwant Mann to prove foreign funding in Bikram Singh Majithia-linked company

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday challenged chief minister Bhagwant Mann to prove that Saraya Industries Limite, in which his party colleague Bikram Singh Majithia holds an 11% inherited stake, received even a single rupee in foreign funding since 2007. He dismissed allegations made in the disproportionate assets case against Majithia as baseless and politically motivated. Addressing a press conference, Sukhbir said, "The only foreign funding received by Saraya Industries was in March 2006—one year before SAD formed govt in the state—when it received Rs 35 crore from United States-based Clearwater Corporation in exchange for 25% shares in the company. Majithia entered politics only in 2007. " He asserted that Clearwater Corporation, which had offices in several countries, invested Rs 50,000 crore globally. "All money invested by this company through the NBFC in Saraya Industries was done after due clearance from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and approval of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)." Sukhbir made it clear that all transactions of Saraya Industries were scrutinised and accepted by the income-tax department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Преносим лазерен заваръчен пистолет, 50% отстъпка днес HL Купете сега Undo "This clearly proves that claims of an investment of Rs 540 crore into Saraya Industries through foreign funding are absurd and malicious and being done with the sole purpose of defaming Majithia," he said. He added Saraya Industries was a private limited company deemed to be a public limited company and was a different entity from Majithia, and could not be solely associated with the latter. "Majithia has no control over the company's day-to-day functioning," Sukhbir said. Sukhbir reiterated that Mann pressured DGP Gaurav Yadav to register a case against Majithia because the latter was constantly exposing him and his corrupt and immoral cabinet colleagues. "The CM rang up the DGP on June 24 night and threatened to remove him in case he did not register a case against Majithia by the morning. Consequently, DGP wrote to the vigilance bureau to register a case against the Akali leader at 10.40 pm the same night. Then, a disproportionate assets case was registered against Mr Majithia at 4.40am on June 25," Sukhbir said. Terming the entire case as illegal and wilful fabrication, Badal said, "We will go to the people and expose the AAP govt." "The truth is the AAP govt failed to find any drugs in the NDPS case and has now failed to find any illegal assets in the Disproportionate Assets case," Badal added. MSID:: 121993707 413 |
