YouTuber Jasbir Singh's police remand extended by two days in spying case
A Mohali court on Saturday extended for two days the police remand of Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh, who was arrested on espionage charges on June 4.
Jasbir Singh was produced before the court after his three-day police remand ended on Saturday. Police sought a seven-day remand but the court granted them two days, his counsel said.
Jasbir Singh was in touch with influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is in custody on charges of spying for Pakistan, and after his arrest the police had said that it had unearthed a terror-backed espionage network linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials.
The police had said that the YouTuber was allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Jasbir Singh, alias Jaan Mahal, 41, a resident of Mahlan village in Rupnagar district, was running a YouTube channel JaanMahal Video with over 11 lakh subscribers, ostensibly posting travel and cooking vlogs.
He was found to be associated with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO), was in contact with a Pakistan High Commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, police had earlier alleged.
He was found to be associated with PIO Shakir, alias Jatt Randhawa, part of a terror-backed espionage network.
The accused had also travelled to Pakistan in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, the police had said.
Hisar native Jyoti Malhotra, 33, who was running the YouTube channel, Travel with JO, was arrested last month.
On May 13, India had expelled Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission, for allegedly indulging in espionage. Malhotra was allegedly in touch with Danish since November 2023.

In March, salaries and allowances for federal ministers, ministers of state, and advisers were also raised- by as much as 188%- following an amendment to the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Allowances and Salaries) Act, 1975. After the revision, federal ministers now earn ₹519,000 per month, up from ₹200,000. Earlier this year, Pakistan's Finance Committee approved salary increases for National Assembly members and senators as well, raising their monthly salaries to ₹519,000. The salary hikes come at a time when Pakistan continues to grapple with economic challenges, including inflation and pressure from international lenders for fiscal restraint. CBI nabs Dimapur bank ex-manager, proprietor of pvt firm for ‘graft'
Dimapur: The CBI has arrested a former senior manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Dimapur branch, from Guwahati and the proprietor of a Dimapur-based private firm from Dimapur for their alleged involvement in a bribery case. The former PNB senior manager has been identified as Seiminthang Singson and the proprietor of M/s Century Enterprises, Dhobinala, Dimapur, as Sanjit Chandra Dey. On June 4, the CBI registered a case against the two on the allegations that Singson took undue advantage of Rs 1 lakh in his bank account from the bank account of Dey for allowing extension of cash credit limit of Rs 20 lakh to the latter, even though his firm was not in right financial health. Searches were conducted in official and residential premises of both the accused at five locations in Dimapur and two locations in Guwahati on Friday and Saturday, leading to the recovery of incriminating documents and articles, a CBI release said on Saturday. It said Singson took undue advantage of a total of Rs 1.69 lakh from Dey, as per searches and seizure so far. Besides, an invoice of a total of Rs 2,06,200, relating to the purchase of electric/electronics items, were also seized from the office premises of Dey. These items were purchased by Dey in the name of Singson, the release said Some of the items found at the residential premises of Singson in Dimapur and Guwahati have been seized for investigation, the CBI said.

To a question on Punjab Police claiming that 150 Pakistani contacts were retrieved from his phone, Dhupar said there was no such thing. 'Many people visited Pakistan multiple times. Did they become guilty (of doing wrong) by visiting the neighbouring nation,' he said while replying to a question. On Pakistani YouTuber Nasir Dhillon's alleged link to a spy network, Dhupar said the police did not take Dhillon's name in the court while seeking Singh's remand. Nasir Dhillon, a former Pakistani police official, runs a YouTube channel 'Punjabi Lehar'. He has claimed to unite families divided during partition in 1947. His role is reportedly under investigation for possible links to the espionage network unearthed by Indian authorities. Asked whether Singh gave his laptop to Pakistani official Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, Dhupar denied it and said when Singh visited Pakistan, his laptop was examined for a routine security check. The police had alleged that Singh was in touch with many Pakistan-based entities, including ISI agents and had been providing sensitive information about the movement of the Indian Army and other inside activities of the country to Pakistan.
