2 Detroit kids sleeping in van died of carbon monoxide, not hypothermia, medical examiner says
The cause of death of two young children who were sleeping in their family's van was revealed to be carbon monoxide poisoning and not exposure to the cold as Detroit authorities first thought.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said it conducted examinations Feb. 11, the day after Amillah Currie, 2, and Darnell Currie, 9, died. Their mother, Tateona Williams, said she found them unresponsive and not breathing after the van the family was living in ran out of gas.
The medical examiner's office said the manner of death for both children was an accident. Williams could not immediately be reached Thursday.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said in a statement Thursday that the department received the medical examiner's report and "will continue investigating the facts and circumstances of the case and submit our findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office."
Police declined to answer further questions.
Toxicologist Aimee Nefcy told NBC affiliate WDIV of Detroit that there could have been an internal leak inside the vehicle or carbon monoxide could have filtered in through a cracked window.
"Once it gets inside the van, it settles to the bottom because it's heavier than normal air," she said. "And it layers down on the bottom of the van and it doesn't circulate out because all the windows are up higher than where the carbon monoxide is sitting."
Hours before the deaths, Williams had parked on the ninth floor of Hollywood Casino's parking garage. Bettison has said that he believed the family used the garage for safety and to use the casino's bathroom. The temperature in the city that day was around 12 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service.
Inside the van were Williams and her four children, her mother and her mother's child, People magazine reported.
It's believed the family had moved around from various casino parking lots. Mayor Mike Duggan said at a news conference last month that the family reached out to a homeless response team Nov. 25 and said they had been living with another family but could no longer stay there and needed help finding a new place.
Duggan said that during that conversation, "there was no resolution reached on where they would go," and an outreach worker did not visit the family. The family had also reached out for help in the summer and the previous year, the mayor said. He called for a review into the family's request for assistance.
Williams has since been given a new home. The city of Detroit and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries posted a video last week of her receiving the keys.
"We had to fix it, prep it, furnish it and then give them a good start so they don't have to go one day with no food or being outside anymore," said the organization's CEO and president, Chad Audi.

Kids left alone in hot car that reached 104 degrees, GA cops say. Man charged
Two children were left alone in a sweltering car outside an Atlanta shopping mall, and now a man is charged, Georgia police said. The man was arrested on two counts of second-degree child cruelty in the June 4 incident at Cumberland Mall, authorities wrote in a criminal warrant obtained by McClatchy News. Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately available. Officers were called to the parking lot just before 1 p.m. after a witness spotted the youngsters in a car by themselves and called 911, WSB-TV reported, citing the Cobb County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said the kids were in the car with no air conditioning for at least 41 minutes. Temperatures in Atlanta reached 80 degrees that day, according to AccuWeather, and authorities said the car's internal temperature hit triple digits. 'An infrared thermometer displayed the temperature of 104 degrees where said victim was sitting in,' according to the affidavit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised that cracking a window isn't enough to stay cool in the warmer months, as 'temperatures inside the car can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes.' Authorities didn't give an update on the children's conditions or say if or how they're related to the man who was arrested. McClatchy News reached out to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office for more information June 10 and was awaiting a response. The man was taken to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and released June 6 after posting an $11,220 bond, online records show.

10 killed in Austrian school shooting: A rare event for the country
10 people, including teenagers, were killed after a shooter opened fire at a high school in Austria on Tuesday. The shooting was one of the worst in the country's history. According to CNN, at first Austrian police said eight people were killed and then the number was raised to nine. Gerhard Karner, the country's interior minister, said that six of the victims were female and three were male. The victims also included children between 14 and 18 years old. Later in the day the Graz Regional Hospital said that a woman who was wounded in the attack died of her injuries, per NBC. There were 12 students also injured in the shooting, some of them seriously. During a press conference following the shooting, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker described Tuesday as a 'dark day in the history of our country.' 'There are no words to express the pain, disbelief and grief felt by the whole of Austria. Our country stands still in this moment of horror,' Stocker added. The country of Austria will be holding a period of mourning over the next three days to pay respect to the victims. A minute of silence will be held on Wednesday and the flag will be flown at half-staff at all public buildings, per The Washington Post. The incident occurred at the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Dreierschützengasse school in Graz, Austria's second largest city. Police first responded to reports of 'several' suspected gunshots at the school around 10 a.m. local time. Several vehicles, ambulance, a police helicopter and a special task force were deployed to the scene, per NBC. Over 300 police officers were sent to the scene to ensure an evacuation and cordon off the school. The injured students were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, per The Washington Post. The lone suspect in the shooting was identified as a 21-year-old Austrian male who had previously attended the school but did not graduate. He carried out the killing spree using a rifle and a handgun before fatally shooting himself in a bathroom, per CNN. The country's most recent mass shooting was in 2020, when a man killed four people in Vienna, before being fatally shot by police. Credit for the attack was claimed by The Islamic State.
