8 takeaways from Bills' Brandon Beane at the 2025 NFL combine

Yahoo01-03-2025

The Buffalo Bills and rest of the NFL took in the 2025 combine this week from Indianapolis. Included in the bunch was head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane.
As is annually the case, McDermott and Beane were part of the Buffalo brass that got a chance to speak with prospects ahead of the upcoming draft in April. The duo also did plenty of chatting with the media.
With that, here are eight takeaways from Beane's press conference at the combine:
The Bills quote of the day from the combine came from Beane as he discussed quarterback Josh Allen winning the 2024 NFL MVP Award. Upon reflecting on Allen's honor, Beane made reference to the "overrated" tag that Allen received prior to the start of last season.
"We go from a guy that is 'overrated' to a guy that won MVP," Beane said.
"This is a guy that was overrated [pause] right?"*7 months earlier*"There are idiots everywhere."-#Bills GM Brandon Beane on Josh Allen winning the MVP award#BillsMafia @BuffaloPlus https://t.co/tKtyWCeAjI pic.twitter.com/xhJrVNFt6x

Prior to Beane speaking at the combine the Bills announced a four-year extension signed by wide receiver Khalil Shakir. Beane explained it from the team's perspective.
"He's a true lunch pail Buffalonian," Beane said.

"A lot of respect for what he did to come back and help us case a trophy," Beane said. "But we're still working through that."
The Bills could move on from Miller this offseason as the pass rusher has an out in his contract. At 35, it remains to be seen if Miller returns to Buffalo.
Brandon Beane on Von Miller: 'As the year went on, he showed he can still play. Any decisions, we're still working through all that.' #Bills #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/wIm1n9Lnjw

Cole Bishop and Damar Hamlin have two different outlooks from the safety position on the Bills defense. Bishop sounds like he's going to have a chance at having a big role in 2025. Meanwhile, Hamlin is a pending free agent but his future is still up in the air.
"Of course we'd love to have a Damar Hamlin back," Beane said. "If we can get him back, great. If we can't, I want to hug him."

Beane had two interesting comments relating to the cornerback position.
The Bills defense might lose Rasul Douglas. He is a pending free agent. Beane provided little update on Douglas, only saying "we'll see."
If there a hole, Beane discussed the type of cornerback Buffalo would be looking for. While doing so, he also made mention of former first-round pick Kaiir Elam... who might get another look at playing time.
Brandon Beane on #Bills need at CB and what the team is looking for at that position: 'We have Kaiir here and some other guys… We'll look in free agency and the draft… You gotta tackle. You gotta be physical.' #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/q5C03VJAVZ

Beane has not been shy at the NFL draft over the years as he has moved up and down the board. That could happen again and Beane wasn't shy about it.
'I'm a lot of things but scared ain't one of them.'*glass shatters* 'BAH GAWD that's Brandon Beane's music' #BillsMafia @BuffaloPlus https://t.co/yy2ZoJj1KE pic.twitter.com/MZBIDtQ65A

At the end of the 2024 season, both Beane and McDermott were a bit hard on him. In Year 2, they want more.
At the combine, Beane pumped those brakes a bit. The GM admitted Coleman is still young.
"Let's give him a chance," Beane said.
'Let's give him a chance… I have no doubt he's going to comeback with a refreshed mindset and ready to, if there are doubters, prove them wrong.'-#Bills GM Brandon Beane on Keon Coleman#BillsMafia @BuffaloPlus pic.twitter.com/bwIqGPV6CO

James Cook has been pretty vocal about wanting an extension and wanting to get paid a nice chunk of change.
Beane called Cook "a beautiful man" but was candid in saying he hopes to keep things just between the player and team... as opposed to Cook going on the record and saying how much money he wants to be paid.
Brandon Beane called RB James Cook "a beautiful man."💰: "The business is the business. Would I prefer we don't take the business outside? Yes, I think that's always the best way to handle it...Just because we're not on the same page today doesn't mean we wouldn't be tomorrow." pic.twitter.com/3KXXuOGPMr

NBA icon celebrates 50th birthday wearing Norfolk State jersey

On June 7, 2025, NBA legend Allen "The Answer" Iverson celebrated his 50th birthday in fitting style-sporting a Michael Vick No. 7 jersey at a lavish after?party that doubled as a testament to sports, music, and HBCU culture colliding under one roof. The festivities were nothing short of remarkable. Hip Hop turned up when Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie delivered a high?energy set, igniting the crowd. Among the VIPs were boxing champion Terence Crawford and none other than Norfolk State's head football coach, Michael Vick. The former NFL star, who took the helm at NSU in December 2024, has already begun elevating the university's brand through his celebrity gravitas and wide network. Vick's hiring marks part of a broader trend in HBCU athletics, following trailblazers like Deion Sanders and Eddie George, in leveraging household names to boost visibility and recruitment. Norfolk State's athletic director, Melody Webb, emphasized that Vick's "resilience and personal journey" make him the perfect ambassador to attract talent and media attention. Meanwhile, Iverson-born June?7,?1975, in Hampton, Virginia-reflected on a career that defied expectations. Standing just 6?0? and 165?lb, he was a rare force in a league of giants. Nicknamed "The Answer," he amassed 11 NBA All?Star nods, a 2001 MVP award, four scoring titles, and over 24,000 career points, all with his trademark fearless style and cultural flair. After retiring in 2011, he continued shaping the game's culture and influence-later culminating in a statue unveiled near the 76ers' training complex in 2024. That evening, with music booming, HBCU jerseys front and center, and legends mingling, Iverson's milestone became more than personal-it was a celebration of intertwined legacies. As coach Vick builds Norfolk State's brand and Iverson's influence endures, the night stood as a vivid reminder that greatness spans generations, sports, and stages.
