CM Stalin to unveil DMK strategy for 2026 Assembly polls on June 1

Hans India08-05-2025

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin has called on party cadres to prioritise election work in the coming year, urging them to actively gear up for the 2026 Assembly polls.
CM Stalin informed party functionaries that a comprehensive election working plan will be presented at the DMK's general council meeting scheduled for June 1 in Madurai.
The Chief Minister emphasised the need for widespread grassroots engagement, calling for the participation of booth-level agents and committee members in the 1,244 public meetings planned across the state. These meetings aim to equip functionaries with data-driven narratives showcasing the achievements of the DMK government, enabling them to effectively communicate these to every voter.
The CM also urged cadres to remain active on social media, particularly through WhatsApp groups, and to circulate content disseminated by the party's IT wing and other communication channels to strengthen voter outreach.
With an ambitious target of securing 200 out of the 234 Assembly seats in the 2026 elections, CM Stalin has tasked full-time party in-charges in each Assembly constituency with intensifying promotion of the government's welfare schemes. These representatives report directly to the party's election cell, headquartered at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK's state office. The election cell is led by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also heads the party's youth wing, and includes senior leaders such as Organising Secretary R.S. Bharathy and Ministers Thangam Thenarasu, E.V. Velu, and K.N. Nehru.
The full-timers are responsible for directly engaging with the public to highlight the transformative impact of government initiatives.
Since assuming office in May 2021, the DMK government has launched several flagship welfare schemes. These include free bus travel for women; the 'Pudhumai Penn' scheme, which provides Rs 1,000 monthly financial assistance to girl students from government schools pursuing higher education; and its extension to boys under the 'Tamizh Pudhalvan' scheme.
Other key initiatives include the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, offering nutritious meals to government school students from Classes I to 5; the upgrading of 25 higher secondary schools into 'Schools of Excellence' with a Rs 150 crore investment; and the establishment of 708 Urban Health Centers across 21 municipal corporations and 63 municipalities to strengthen urban healthcare access.
The 'Kalaignar Women's Honorarium' provides financial assistance to women from marginalised communities, promoting gender equality and economic empowerment.
The 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' scheme delivers healthcare services directly to homes, focusing on early detection and treatment of non-communicable diseases, especially for people over 45 and those with limited mobility. Additionally, the 'Naan Mudhalvan' initiative, launched in March 2022, seeks to skill 10 lakh youth annually, offering career guidance, spoken English coaching, and training in coding and robotics.
Party sources revealed that daily reports are collected from constituency in-charges to track public responses to these schemes. Every three days, Udhayanidhi Stalin's team reviews the data and gathers feedback with the assistance of a professional analytics team.

Samruddhi expressway to be linked to Vadhvan port

Mumbai: Maharashtra will connect the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi expressway corridor to the upcoming greenfield Vadhvan port, slated to be the country's biggest such facility, via the Nashik highway, the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai greenfield expressway corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, the under-construction bullet train corridor, and the coastal road that is planned to be extended up to the port. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The Prosperity corridor will have up to 500 MW to 1,000 MW capacity solar plant along it with 200 MW starting soon, besides a huge gas pipeline that will supply PNG not only to cities but also to power and steel plants right up to Gadchiroli to achieve decarbonisation targets. Every 500 metres to a kilometre there is a groundwater recharge facility and ponds to hold rainwater," said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis soon after opening the 76 km last leg of Samruddhi between Igatpuri and Bhiwandi. He announced that very soon, work on the Rs 80,000 crore Shaktipeeth corridor from Nagpur to the Goa border via Marathwada and Western Maharashtra will also be started in full swing. Deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar were present at the Samruddhi inauguration, besides scores of ministers and legislators. The CM and his deputies also opened the south-bound arm of the Vashi creek bridge through an online event. "Samruddhi expressway is not just a road; it is a green corridor for Maharashtra's fast-emerging economy as 24 districts of Maharashtra have been connected to JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and eventually to Vadhwan. Special wildlife infrastructure with 100 animal overpasses and underpasses have been constructed to ensure their safe passage. A total of seven tunnels have been built; the one between Igatpuri and Kasara being the widest in the country. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We will break this record once the Pune-Mumbai missing link tunnel is completed. The interchanges on the Samruddhi expressway look like art work drawn on paper. Inside the tunnel, artificial rainfall will begin when the temperature crosses 60 degrees due to a fire incident and will stop when it drops to 30 degrees," he said while interacting with the media at Igatpuri. The tunnel was built by Afcons. Fadnavis said over 3.3 million plantations were done using local species. "While building the road, 1,000 farm ponds were created. We are prepared to generate 200 MW of solar power and 22 amenity centres have been set up. A gas pipeline will also reach from Konkan to Nagpur, providing gas to people and industries. Religious places like Shirdi, Shegaon and Trimbakeshwar will come closer. Now we want to construct the Shaktipeeth expressway as well on a fast-track basis," he said. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde termed Samruddhi a game-changer. "It was one of the toughest and most challenging projects and will greatly benefit people and businesses. A journey that took 18 hours will now take only eight hours — saving both fuel and time. We paid attention to even the smallest details. Around 1.1 million large trees and 2.2 million small plants will be planted, making the expressway the most eco-friendly project ever," he said, pointing out that the road will boost agriculture, tourism, and industry. A farmer starting in the morning from Nagpur with produce used to reach Mumbai in three days. Now, he can reach by evening," he added. Shinde said the Shaktipeeth expressway will be a game-changer for Marathwada as farmers won't commit suicide anymore. After the inauguration, the chief minister and his deputies inspected the longest Igatpuri tunnel of the expressway and viaduct in the stretch. To conduct an inspection of the expressway, Dy CM Shinde drove a high-end car with CM Fadnavis sitting beside him in the front seat and Pawar occupying the back seat. The inspection lasted around 45 minutes, including the time taken for the journey between Igatpuri and Amane. On the way back, Fadnavis and Shinde swapped seats with the CM getting behind the wheel, while Pawar remained in the same seat. The newly-constructed third creek bridge near Vashi Sion-Panvel Highway was also inaugurated via video conferencing on the occasion. The earlier operational 625 km of the expressway stretch was used by nearly two crore vehicles in the last two years. The maximum speed limit on the expressway is 100 kmh in ghat sections and 120 kmh on flat terrain. The expressway traverses through 392 villages in 26 talukas across 10 districts in five revenue divisions. A smart integrated traffic management system (ITMS) will be installed on the expressway soon, the CM said, adding they gave the 'right of way' to the Gas Authority of India Ltd for laying the pipeline while making the access control road between Mumbai and Nagpur. Dy CM Ajit Pawar said many, including farmers from his party, opposed the Samruddhi project at the beginning, but when CM Fadnavis announced very attractive compensation, they all sided with the project and accepted money. "The project was estimated to cost Rs 55,500 crore but eventually went well above Rs 61,000 crore. Around 12 crore cement bags were used in the project. Fadnavis started the project when he was CM, and now it was inaugurated during his second term, and such continuity is rare in politics. And also let's not forget the contribution of Eknath Shinde," he said.

Census 2027: A political weapon for the DMK? Focus Tamil Nadu

The Government of India has announced that the long-delayed Population Census will finally be held in March 2027—a full 17 years after the last one in 2011. But the moment this announcement was made, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M. K. Stalin fired a sharp political salvo. He reiterated that the Census—and the delimitation exercise that will follow—could be used to reduce Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament. So, is the 2027 Census shaping up to be a political weapon for the DMK? And could this become a central issue ahead of Tamil Nadu's 2026 Assembly elections? Let's break it down. Piyush Goyal calls Italian business enclaves in India to boost investment

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday proposed to develop an industrial conclave for Italian businesses in India to promote investments. Speaking here at India-Italy Business Forum meeting, he said Italian companies can consider setting up manufacturing units and offices in those enclaves. "I have a proposition for you. We can set up Italian enclaves where Italian businesses can set up shops... we can set up hotels, restaurants, healthcare for Italian people who would come to work there. It will be home away from home for them," Goyal said. These industrial parks can be set up in the proposed industrail corridors in different parts of the country. The minister is here on a two-day visit. He is meeting leaders and businesses to boost trade and investments between the two countries. India would invite Italian companies to certain locations in India such as Dighi near Mumbai and Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) in Maharashtra to showcase potential locations for these enclaves. The government has announced to invest about Rs 28,000 crore to set up 12 industrial nodes, and build 100 industrial parks in the country. These industrial areas will be located at Khurpia in Uttarakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerala, Agra and Prayagraj in UP, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh, and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan.
