Coming public flats to be popular due to urban locales
The Housing Authority on Friday said it expects the more than 2,700 flats set to be rolled out soon under the Green Form Subsidised Home Ownership Scheme will be popular among buyers.
The subsidised units, including 2,576 new flats at Wang Chi Court in Kowloon Bay, will be rolled out in the third quarter of 2025.
Speaking on RTHK, the chairwoman of the authority's subsidised housing committee, Cleresa Wong, said the flats will be sold at a 40 percent discount to market value, and that the prices were set after taking into consideration people's affordability.
'The estate is in urban areas, located on Wang Chiu Road in Kowloon Bay, with convenient transport nearby," she said.
"It is also within a well-developed community, so I believe the flats will be popular.'
Kowloon East lawmaker Frankie Ngan said the scheme will benefit tenants affected by the Choi Hung Estate clearance.
'For residents who have lived at Choi Hung Estate for decades, it's a good opportunity to purchase a home this time as the new estate is only a street away from their previous community,' he said.
Lawmaker Tony Tse from the architectural, surveying, planning and landscape sector said people on higher incomes will have more incentive to purchase the subsidised units instead of renting now that the legislature has passed a bill criminalising serious abuse of public housing.

He acknowledged the presence of both "supporting forces" and "counter-currents" in the SAR's charm offensive. "[When] the counter-current is against me, if I still want to swim in that direction, I swim double fast, I make double the effort. I'm asking everybody in the government to double the effort, tell Hong Kong's true story," Lee said. The CE added that Hong Kong must work hard to continue attracting investment and professionals from outside the territory. "Investment is something that drives changes, investment is also something that drives talents to come and talents to remain, because investment leads to actual business," he said.

File photo: RTHK The government said on Friday it plans to charge HK$10 for vehicles using the Central Kowloon Route, while raising tolls for two existing tunnels. It said the toll for users of the new tunnel would be the same for all types of vehicles, while it also wants to charge HK$8 instead of HK$5 for those using the Aberdeen and Shing Mun tunnels. In documents submitted to the legislature, the Transport and Logistics Bureau said public affordability was among the issues that officials had taken into account in making the proposals. It said the higher charges are expected to have a minimal impact on traffic for the two existing tunnels, but the toll hike would double the revenue generated, to around HK$289 million a year. Officials plan to table legal amendments within this Legco year, and if lawmakers approve them, the new charges could take effect within a month. The new route in Kowloon is due to open partially later this year. Officials estimate the tolls from the new route would add HK$257 million a year to public coffers. They said the fee would allow the new tunnel to absorb around one fifth of the East-West bound traffic in Kowloon, easing traffic congestion in busy districts such as Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City and Sham Shui Po. If lawmakers approve the proposal, the government plans to charge road users in the middle of next year, when the entire route is scheduled to be completed. The legislature's transport panel is due to discuss the matter in a week.

Photo: RTHK Chief Secretary Eric Chan said a record number of applicants for a summer internship scheme this year organised by the government and some of the city's biggest private firms showed it is popular among youngsters. Chan and the head of the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau (HYAB), Alice Mak, on Friday officiated at the kick-off ceremony of the HYAB Scheme on Corporate Summer Internship on the Mainland and Overseas 2025. Launched in 2018, the scheme received applications from 3,100 students this year, with over 400 positions offered. The number of participating corporations stood at 28, also a new high. Chan said the high number of applicants this year also showed youngsters would like to better themselves and are ready to face challenges. "I hope youngsters could seize this unique opportunity to equip work attributes through your assigned position, actively understand the different workplace culture and lifestyles, and pursue the best you can," he said.
