Israeli strike on Iran's Evin prison irresponsible, says sister of French prisoner

Al Arabiya4 hours ago

An Israeli strike on Evin prison in Tehran on Monday is completely irresponsible and puts prisoners 'in mortal danger,' said Noemie Kohler, the sister of French national Cecile Kohler who is jailed there.
Iran's judiciary said Israeli strikes left sections of the facility damaged and Israel's defense minister confirmed the army was targeting it.
Cecile Kohler has been held along with her partner Jacques Paris in Evin since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject.
Overall, Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals in what some Western governments describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West.
Most are held in Evin, a large, heavily fortified complex notorious among activists for rights abuses.
It is located in a northern district of the Iranian capital.
'This strike is completely irresponsible. Cecile, Jacques and all the prisoners are in mortal danger,' Noemie Kohler told AFP.
'This is really the worst thing that could have happened,' she added.
'We have no news, we don't know if they are still alive, we're panicking,' Noemie Kohler said.
She urged the French authorities to 'condemn these extremely dangerous strikes' and secure the release of the French prisoners.
She also expressed concern about the risk of 'chaos' and 'riots.'
Noemie Kohler has tirelessly campaigned to secure the release of her sister and her sister's partner Jacques Paris.
Chirinne Ardakani, a lawyer for the Kohler family, denounced the strikes as 'illegal'.
'The risk of riots, general confusion and reprisals by the security forces against the insurgent prisoners raises fears of bloodshed,' she told AFP.
'Both sides are playing with people's lives.'
The Iranian judiciary's website, Mizan Online, said that the prison buildings remained 'under control.'

British government recommends UK nationals in Qatar shelter in place

The British government on Monday issued a warning recommending that U.K. citizens in Qatar shelter in place until further notice. The recommendation, which was issued out of 'an abundance of caution' it said, and included no details, follows a similar warning the US government issued to its citizens in the Gulf Arab State. Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson earlier said that the security situation in the country remained stable.

Israeli strikes on Iran may have violated international law, UN mission says

A fact-finding mission mandated by the United Nations said on Monday that some of Israel's strikes on Iran may have broken international humanitarian law, citing the killing of civilians in an apartment block and three aid workers in the capital Tehran. 'Among those killed in Tehran were dozens of residents of an apartment complex and three humanitarian workers from the Iranian Red [Crescent], while damaged sites included a clinic for children with autism and a hospital in Kermanshah,' the investigative body said in a statement to journalists. 'This, and the reported lack of effective advance warning by Israel, which may affect the population's ability to reach safety, raise serious concerns in relation to the principles of proportionality, distinction, and precaution under international humanitarian law.'

European Commission allocates $230 million to support Palestinians

LONDON: The European Commission announced on Monday that it has allocated $230 million to support the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and the Palestinian Authority. On Monday, the commission announced that it had allocated €150 million ($172 million) to the PA to ensure the delivery of essential public services, including payment of salaries for teachers, civil servants, and healthcare workers. This financial support is contingent upon the implementation of the reform agenda, it added. UNRWA received €52 million ($58 million) to support its education, healthcare, and relief services for Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Since late 2023, UNRWA has been crucial in providing aid and shelter to millions of Palestinians in Gaza amid ongoing Israeli attacks, some of which targeted UN staff and UNRWA facilities. Dubravka Suica, the commissioner for the Mediterranean, said: 'Our support to the Palestinian people remains steadfast. 'With this (first) disbursement of €202 million to the Palestinian Authority and the UN Agency UNRWA, we reaffirm our unwavering political and financial commitment,' she added. The funds are part of the commission's Palestine Recovery and Resilience program for 2025-2026, amounting to up to €1.6 billion ($1.84 billion), in which the EU reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people and its commitment to a two-state solution, as announced in April during the EU-Palestinian Authority high-level political dialogue. 'The EU is deeply concerned about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the worsening conditions in the West Bank. We remain firmly committed to a just and lasting peace, grounded in a negotiated two-state solution,' Suica added.
